Where are the fast horses?

One question I ask myself every day while watching The Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers.

Why, I repeat why, were outlaws, who supposedly had money from all the banks and stagecoaches they robbed, why could they not find horses that were the fastest in the West. As far back as I can remember, and that goes way back to the old Ohio Theatre in Dayton, Ohio, in the 40's, where I watched Westerns all Saturday afternoon, bad guys, the ones in the black hats and often black or dark horses, could never outrun the guys on the white horses and generally wearing a white had.

Maybe it was the white horse and white hat that made them faster.

I would think that Jesse James, with all his money, or the Daltons or the Youngers, or Doc Holiday, they should have been able to afford a fast horse, but the good guys always seem to have the fastest.

And when they jumped from their horse to the bad guys, and they fell to the ground, were there a lot of broken arms and legs
