I am watching the British Open from Muirfield in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland, where household name, Shiv Kapur from India, is currently in the lead. I recognize few of the English names, so Shiv is no different.
Why are golfers always so shocked and surprised when they miss a putt. They seem shocked, disillusioned, "What, ah, why, ah, it didn't go in the cup, something is wrong." They can't seem to realize that somehow, they missed that putt.
They are playing for a purse of ............. $8,000,000.00. The Open Championship was first played on 17 October 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. The inaugural tournament was restricted to professionals and attracted a field of eight golfers who played three rounds of Prestwick's twelve-hole course in a single day. Willie Park, Sr. won with a score of 174, beating the favourite Old Tom Morris by two strokes. The following year the tournament was opened to amateurs; eight of them joined ten professionals in the field.
I don't follow golf like I used to. I miss Arnie and Jack and Gary. Saw San Snead play on a number of occasions, saw Joe Lewis play an exhibition round once at the Community Course on Stroop Road in Dayton, Ohio. NCR put in a course in, I think, 1957, we saw Doug Ford and Littler, Snead and Hogan at that one, have seen many that were playing back in the 50's and 60's.
When I played, and missed a putt, which was often, I understood why, I was a lousy putter. I used to have 6 putters, and before playing, I would take out all six, look at them, talk to them, feel them, and there was always one that talked to me .... "Take me, take me." Later I learned that putters are practical jokers.
