I learned something today .....

I did not realize it, but apparently, sporting events, happen, whether I am in front of the TV or not. Case in point, The Texas A&M Alabama game started, and I was not watching it. I had told my wife I would go to Walmart with her, forgetting, momentarily, about the game. I missed very little though, what a opening quarter.

Rutgers 6 Princeton 4
College Field, New Brunswick, NJ

Why is football so popular, and, when did it happen. What is the appeal, to millions, to watch a football game? Nancy Drew, in one of her early books, goes to the "BIG" game, for get the teams. People have been watching the game for many years. Rutgers University and its neighbor, Princeton, played the first game of intercollegiate football on Nov. 6, 1869, New Brunswick, N.J. Rutgers won that first game, 6-4. It grows and grows, each year. I now get some great high school games from all over the country. We know about college and the pros.

I think I enjoyed the games though, just as much, when I listened to them on the radio many years ago. I still remember the day that Tom Harmon had against Ohio State. He had such a memorable day that the Ohio State fans gave him, a Michigan player, a standing ovation. Never happened since, and never will again.

Is it the pre-game and the post game that are so appealing? I have sat through games where iy was unbearably cold. Some in Cleveland, where that wind from the lake blows into the stadium were cold beyond believe. Yet, we sat there, teeth chattering, bundled up, watching. I have gone to a few games, in Columbus, Ohio, to watch Ohio State, tailgate too much, and miss the game.

And now, if the game is televised, there is a guy standing on the sidelines ... when he raises his arm, the game stops and the commercials roll, when his arm comes down ...... go on with the game. It used to be a game, that was televised. Now, it is nothing more than a television show, made for television, if you think not, look at the Super Bowl. It's a shame they have to interrupt all that good rhetoric and entertainment with the game.

Gotta go, the half is over ............... "Honey, would you get me another beer, can't leave the set right now."
