The current debate regarding a strike against Syria is a classic Washingtonian distraction. With major threats to our national security and long-term interests fermenting in the Middle East, the president and Congress have instead decided to debate an insignificant, restricted, and largely symbolic strike on Syria.
Has Bashar Al-Assad committed horrific and inhumane acts against his own people? Yes. However, over the course of this two-year civil war reports have emerged that Assad used these weapons multiple times, and after each use America concluded that this cannot be our war and that we must abstain.
A brief bombing campaign may make us feel good, but it will do nothing to solve or stop the bloody civil war in Syria between two factions that don't line up with American values. Meanwhile, vital issues of national security are being ignored by our president.
Each day Iran moves closer to a nuclear weapon, radical Islam spreads throughout the world, and budgetary crackdowns in D.C. take aim at our global military might. We cannot allow these issues to fall by the wayside.
Syria's civil war has displayed the worst of dictatorial rule, however it cannot be our war while so many more vital issues are lingering on the horizon.
