I have started to write a post on this day, five or six times, and either nothing worthwhile came out, or I start writing something, and then, frustratingly, erase it. I started about 7:30 this morning, now 4:30 in the afternoon. What to say, about this day. FDR stated, talking about December 7, 1941, "A date which will live in infamy."
When I think of that date, it is always December 7, 1941. Today, in my mind, is always just, 9/11, no year, just the day, the year seems unimportant, for some reason. I wonder why that is?
I think of Gil, a New York Detective who was at ground Zero that day. I just know he was there, we have never talked of all that he did. The expression on his face, and his demeanor, told it all, I knew it was not something he could talk about. The clothes he wore that day, permeated with soot and dirt and smoke are still on the floor, where he took them off, he could not touch them.
Bernie, his sister, my Daughter in law, witnessed it all from her office window. I am in awe of these two people.
"Another date which will live in infamy." I heard FDR when he spoke, on the radio. I was young, only nine, but the enormity of the events of Pearl Harbor were understood, even to a nine year old. I didn't necessarily understand them all, I just knew. 9/11 evoked similar emotions, even moreso.
