My wife's birthday, and I fixed her breakfast, fried mush and bacon, one of our favorites.

When the dishwasher is full of clean dishes, I try to keep up by washing each plate, rinsing, drying and putting away. So, anyway, as I was washing and drying, it took me back, way back, probably the late 30's, 319 South Brown Street in Dayton, Ohio.We had a neighbor family, across the alley, forget their names, but I was visiting with them one evening after dinner, and they were doing their dishes, just using their hands to get the food off. I have never forgotten that.

When I left, I went right home and told Mom that they only used their hands to wash the dishes. Mom used hot soapy water, used a dishrag, rinsed and dried them.

Then another thought came to me. There was a show on TV last night about favorite meals. That too got me to thinking. One of the early memories I have, of delicacies, was  the pure elation and satisfaction I got from "taking" slivers or pieces of ice off of the ice mans wagon when he would be in the house delivering the ice. It was pure bliss and satisfaction, eating that stolen ice, probably with very dirty hands.

The sign above was hung outside the door, and whatever was pointing up, was the amount of ice you got that day. In those days, many people lived with an alley in the back of their house, so somewhere, there was a nail on the porch for this sign to hang.  Some mischievous kids would sneak in and change the sign, I was not one of them, I just heard about them.

Comments from Fred Thompson

I am one of the countless number of Americans who know firsthand that, in this country, a person may be born into modest circumstances, but that he comes into the world blessed in ways that have been unimaginable to the vast majority of people who have ever lived. We are born with the birthright of freedom and opportunity – free to make our own choices about the important things in life and the opportunity to fulfill our God-given potential.

The greatest fear that I have for my country is that our government now has us on a different path. Instead of freedom and opportunity, it is one of debt, dependence division and decline – a path that will weaken our country and sap the vitality of the American people.

I believe that we are at a tipping point, one from which we may not return. To avoid these disastrous consequences, our country needs leadership that is fearless and confident, a candidate who can give voice to the concerns and frustrations of the American people, a candidate who understands – and will never apologize for – American Exceptionalism.

We don’t need to just manage the way Washington works. We need to fundamentally change Washington. We need someone who has the courage and ability to communicate the truth to the American people. Someone who will explain the hard choices that we must make if we are to give our children and grandchildren the same opportunities our forefathers bestowed on us and avoid the fate that other great nations have suffered throughout history. I believe that person is Newt Gingrich. And that is why I strongly support him and his candidacy for President of the United States.

America needs someone who is able to articulate the message of growth, free enterprise and freedom, someone who knows that bold ideas have preceded every major achievement of mankind – including the United States of America. America needs Newt Gingrich.
Sincerely,
Fred Thompson

Donald Trump Staff in Talks With Financiers, Campaign Managers to Explore Third Party Bid

ABC News’ Huma Khan and Jennifer Wlach report:

Donald Trump’s top political adviser told ABC News he’s speaking to “high-level political operatives” to explore a third-party presidential bid on behalf of the real estate mogul, in a sign that Trump may not quite be done with the 2012 presidential race just yet.

“I can confirm that over the past two weeks I have spoken with many high-level political operatives, campaign managers, finance directors — some of whom I have spoken to in the past. Most are new people from all over the country,” said Michael Cohen, executive vice president at the Trump Organization and special counsel to the reality-TV star.

“Until the time Mr. Trump decides to either endorse a candidate or run himself, I am exploring on his behalf the possibilities of ensuring Mr. Trump appears on the ballot in all states, and to develop a team of professionals who could ensure a potential victory,” Cohen added.

I've considered this scenario for quite a while. I have always liked what he has stated. I don't know how it would effect the outcome of the election, but it might be interesting to find out. I think an Obama/Romney race will be a no-brainer, with Obama winning in a landslide. If Trump can glean some Republican and Democratic votes, and get many of the Independent vote, might make for an interesting race .

Sarah Palin: Newt 'Crucified' By Romney Allies, GOP Establishment

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says that Newt Gingrich is being "crucified" by the Republican establishment, including allies of Mitt Romney, who are trying to rewrite his record with a barrage of negative attacks.

"Look at Newt Gingrich, what's going on with him via the establishment's attacks," Palin told John Stossel of Fox Business on Thursday, the Huffington Post reported.

She added: "They're trying to crucify this man and rewrite history and rewrite what it is that he has stood for all these years."

Palin has not endorsed any of the GOP presidential candidates, but has been enthusiastically supportive of Gingrich.

Last week before the South Carolina GOP primary Palin said she would vote for Newt Gingrich if she was voting in that state's primary.

She added: 'They're trying to crucify this man and rewrite history and rewrite what it is that he has stood for all these years."

Sunday Evening in Ahia

Today, in Nerk, Ahia,  we've had rain, sun, snow, clouds, sleet, all on a Sunday. For some reason it made me think of a Sunday in Elko, Nevada, only without all the weather. Elko was a small town, I worked at the Ranch in motel and casino, for a friend of mine, Bob Goodnight. I remember on breaks, standing out in front of the building, watching the occasional car go by. Very quiet and lonely.

The main casino in town was the Stockmans, known worldwide. I worked a few shifts there, something I always wanted to do. The old timers would talk about their days working in Elko at the Stockmans, it was on my list of things I wanted to do in Nevada, actually, that was the last one on my list. I finished my list there, got on a train, and headed for Ohio.

I've listened to old Mitt bad-mouth Newt all day. Pathetic when you have no agenda of your own and resort to picking others apart. I must admit I have lost all respect for old Richy Rich Mormon Romney.  Might have the choice between a Muslim and a Mormon running the country. We know what to expect from the Muslim, have lived under that rule for a few years. At least we know what to expect from Obama, not sure what the Romney-Mormon  merger might bring us.

Big event tonight, the Millionaire Athlete club is meeting in Hawaii, what competition that will be. One player spent $28 thousand buying earphones for his team, wanted them listening to their music on the "best."

Interesting that a number of "athletes" are having to sell their homes. Some have retired, some are still playing. I guess when you are getting a paycheck each week you can afford a 35 million dollar place to live in. Gets expensive when the checks run out. Wonder what the taxes and upkeep are on a 35 million dollar place?

I bought, and have had now for four days, a SunTouchPlus Nature Bright light. 30 minutes a day will enhance my mood, elevate my energy and promote better sleep. It adds an optimistic new dimension in my life, just by turning it on. I had used it four times now, not sure if it is working or not. Not sure what all happens, maybe it is a gradual thing.

It doesn't tan like I thought it did, so I have ordered a sun lamp that tans, it should be in next week. If both lights work it should change my life......

Disgraced millionaire typing teacher collects $100k a year from NYC

By Christopher Bedford

Alan Rosenfeld, a 66-year-old disgraced typing teacher, hasn’t taught since he was accused of making  inappropriate comments and leering at 8th grade girls in 2001, but still collects $100,049 a year from the city, the New York Post reports.

Rosenfeld, a millionaire businessman and attorney, could have retired at 62 but, a friend told the Post, “It’s a slap in the face to the school system.

And every year he stays onboard, his $85,400 yearly pension grows by another $1,700.

His case is one of seven in the New York City Department of Education, where teachers the department can’t fire are “rubber-roomed” essentially meaning they don’t do any real work but keep getting paid.

Miracle on 21st Street ...

For a few days now I have a left ear ache, which goes down into the left of my throat, hurts when I swallow, on the left side.

I took a couple of sinus pills the other night and they seemed to help. So, yesterday, we were in Meijers, and I went back to the pharmacy to get some sinus pills. The ones I wanted  were not there, had to get them from the pharmacist.

We chatted a bit, told him of my problem, and asked for AccuFed. He told me they don't carry that anymore, but suggested that I go to Walgreen's, they had one called WalFed that was similar. I thought that was nice of him, so we headed to Walgreen's.

Found the WalFed on the shelf, but there was just a card which had to be taken to the pharmacist. I took the card to the window, chatted with the young lady a bit, told her my problem, she asked, "Do you have any blood pressure issues?"

Then, she got the head pharmacist, who quizzed me about my health issues. He told me that the pill I wanted could elevate my blood pressure. He suggested that I just take Tylenol.

First time I was ever referred to another drug store. And then, at Walgreen's, the pharmacist was actually interested in my health issues and suggested a course of action for me, one which was contrary to what I would have done, which could have resulted in some problems for me.

Made my day for me, people being concerned, doesn't happen often .................

Romney Backed by Goldman Sachs, Bailout Banks

The top donor to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's presidential campaign, investment banking and securities firm Goldman Sachs, received over $10 billion in emergency lending and bailouts from the Federal Reserve after the 2008 financial meltdown, according to public sources and published reports.

Goldman backed Obama for election in 2008, and the firm, like many Wall Street institutions, is now backing Mitt Romney for president.

Romney has long had a close relationship with Goldman Sachs.

In 1999 Romney purchased initial IPO shares in Goldman that netted him $1.1 million in profits when he sold them in 2010.

Iran official says oil will reach $150 per barrel

Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's official news agency reports that the head of the state oil company is claiming that the price of crude will go up to $150 per barrel.

Head of the National Iranian Oil Company Ahmad Qalehban did not give a time frame for the prediction, nor any other details in the Sunday report by IRNA.

The price of benchmark U.S. crude on Friday was around $99.56 per barrel.

Qalehban's statement comes as Iranian officials prepare to debate a ban on crude sales to European Union countries, in response to a planned EU embargo on Iran's oil by summer because of that country's nuclear program.

The United States and its allies argue that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons technology, while Tehran says the program is for purely peaceful purposes.

SOTU Drinking Game

When President Obama's fourth State of the Union address was taking place across all the major networks, some were following along playing the State of the Union drinking game.

The instructions are too numerous to list in their entirety, but here are some highlights:

Drink once every time you hear "progress," "let me be clear" or "make no mistake"
If you hear "debt," borrow a shot from a friend, promise you'll really pay it back this time
If you hear "deficit," finish your drink; borrow the drink of the person next to you and drink it too
Drink twice when the President calls a tax increase "asking someone to pay more"
When he adds a color qualifier to jobs ("green" jobs, "blue collar" jobs), drink one drink of the same color
When they show the First Lady, drink once. When they show the First Lady's arms, drink once, delivered by bicep curl
Drink once when they show Speaker Boehner. Drink again if he's crying.
Drink once if they show any of your Congressional representatives, then pat yourself on the back for being able to identify your Congressional representatives.

Should have made for a more entertaining SOTU, and if you fully comprehend the "actual" State of the Union, might go easier if you had a "buzz" on.

Jerry "Hoot" Havens

Jerry Christianson - Joe Francis - Jerry "Hoot" Havens
Bad photograph, cameras not allowed in the club, taken with a little Brownie

I just has some bacon and eggs, when I was done I took the plate out to the kitchen, washed it, dried it, and put it up in the cabinet, and as I dried it, I thought of Jerry "Hoot" Havens. Not sure when I first hooked up with him, probably at the Nevada Club when we turned out as dealers.

Jerry and I shared a number of apartments, and worked together on the same crew at the Primm. I don't know how he got the nickname of Hoot, it just seemed to fit him.

He was a good "clerk" as we were called in those days, thanks to the IRS. They had no classification for dealers, so we were listed as Clerks.

I embarked on a few "excursions" in those days, went to Elko, Oregon on one occasion, and a few other trips, but always had a place to stay when I got back, at Hoots. He was just a good friend, no, a great friend.

I remember Hoot bought a car on one occasion, one he had always wanted. A Ford hardtop convertible, The top automatically receded into the trunk, and you had a convertible. Nice car. Worth a fortune, if he still has it.

The last time we worked together, at The Primm, Hoot and myself, a kid from Vegas, Jerry Christian, and sitting box was Joe Francis. Don Eammelli was the shift manager, and a good friend. Great crew, great store and had a great time. Joe went on to be a casino manager for Harrah. I know he is gone, and have tried to get in touch with Don or his family, I know they are still in Reno. Jerry is probably still around, he was a few years younger. Jerry came to Reno with his new wife, rented an empty apartment, slept on the floor, and each payday they would purchase more furniture.

If Hoot reads this, or anyone who knows or remembers him, joedooley@yahoo.com. Would love to hear from anyone from the "old" days of Reno.

I digress, Hoot always washed dishes after he ate or even dirtied a glass. I was admonished on a number of occasions for leaving a glass on a table, putting something in a sink or not leaving a cleaned kitchen.

Hoot, you've never been forgotten, thought of often, a big part of some great memories.

Obama-No-Show at Trial – Sworn testimony reveals fake Social Security number, other gaps

Georgia citizens today, January 27, 3012,  delivered sworn testimony to a court that Barack Obama is slam-dunk disqualified from having his name on the 2012 presidential ballot in the state, because his father never was a U.S. citizen, which prevents him from qualifying as a “natural-born citizen” as the U.S. Constitution requires for a president.

The historic hearing was the first time that a court has accepted arguments on the merits of the controversy over Obama’s status. His critics say he never met the constitutional requirements to occupy the Oval Office, and the states and Congress failed in their obligations to make sure only a qualified president is inaugurated. His supporters, meanwhile, argue he won the 2008 election and therefore was “vetted” by America.

The hearing was before Judge Michael Malihi of the Georgia state Office of State Administrative Hearings. In Georgia, a state law requires “every candidate for federal” office who is certified by the state executive committees of a political party or who files a notice of candidacy “shall meet the constitutional and statutory qualifications for holding the office being sought.”

Limbaugh, Mike Reagan Blast Romney for Smears on Gingrich

I must admit I thought Romney was playing "dirty pool" when I heard him make those comments. I, too, always thought he was a supporter and admirer of Ronald Reagan. "Richey Rich" Romney will stop at nothing. I think the Mormon Church should do a "morals" evaluation on him. I wonder what all he preached on his "mission." Does "spoiled brat" come to mind?

Ronald Reagan’s eldest son Mike Reagan has issued a statement lambasting Mitt Romney and his supporters for claims that Romney’s Republican presidential rival Newt Gingrich was a strong critic of President Reagan.
Mike Reagan says such claims are false.

Even Rush Limbaugh, shocked by the Romney claims, chimed on his Thursday radio broadcast to say, "This is obviously a coordinated attack to take Newt out here in Florida."

Rush slammed the Romney-backed smear campaign against Newt.

“That kind of stuff is why people hate Romney so much," Limbaugh said.

Limbaugh added that Newt has always been a conservative from his early days in national talk radio in the 1980s.

“He was perhaps the premier defender of Ronald Reagan,” Limbaugh said.

Phil Knight at JoePa event: Who's real trustee?

By GENARO C. ARMAS and MICHAEL RUBINKAM

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Nike founder and chairman Phil Knight got a standing ovation at Joe Paterno's public memorial Thursday for defending the late coach's response to an accusation of child sex abuse against a former assistant.
At a ceremony filled with lavish praise that would likely have embarrassed the school's beloved coach, Knight waded into a subject that had been virtually ignored since Paterno died on Sunday from lung cancer — the immediate cause of his firing after 46 seasons leading Penn State's football team to a record-setting 409 wins.
University trustees have said a major reason Paterno was ousted Nov. 9 was that he failed to alert anyone beyond his two superiors at the school when he was told of an abuse allegation against former assistant Jerry Sandusky in 2002. Sandusky was charged with dozens of child sex abuse counts on Nov. 5, two school officials were charged with perjury and former school president Graham Spanier was pushed out the same night as Paterno.
Commenting on those events, Knight said, "it turns out (Paterno) gave full disclosure to his superiors, information that went up the chains to the head of the campus police and the president of the school. The matter was in the hands of a world-class university, and by a president with an outstanding national reputation."
Knight added, "...this much is clear to me. If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno."
The remark drew a standing ovation from the crowd of 12,000 at the Bryce Jordan Center — with Paterno's widow, Sue, and former defensive coordinator, Tom Bradley, among those rising to their feet.
"Who is the real trustee at Penn State University?" Knight asked.

Someone FINALLY had the guts to ask the question. The institution that Joe gave his life to, abandoned him and contributed to his death. I don't think we will ever know the full truth, but, at least, the question has been raised.

What others see plainly, we often ignore.

Here's something to think about. I have often wondered "What were the German people thinking in the 30's and 40's How much do we actually know, are THEY pulling the wool over our eyes. I got this email today and thought it was worth passing on, some "food for thought." And in this day and age where we have TV cameras on us, hackers on the computer, our life is almost an "open book" to anyone, for the taking.

I remember asking Dad about Castro when I was about 9 years old. I asked, "Is Castro a good guy or bad?"
Dad said...he couldn't tell!! This was about 1955. We were living in Louisiana ...at the time. Dad was in the Army there.
Cuba was fairly close and in the news a lot. The Cubans were asking the same question! Ike was president.
This past July, we had the pleasure of sharing a summer barbecue with a refugee from Cuba . Our dinner conversation was starkly different than most.
This refugee came to the United States as a young boy in the early 1960's. His family was more fortunate than most, as they were able to bring a suitcase...and $100 when they fled Castro's newly formed revolutionary paradise.
Our dinner consisted of all-American fare: hamburgers, potato salad, watermelon and fresh ears of sweet corn. This is a menu shared with family and friends nationwide...while celebrating the birth of our beloved America ...on the Fourth of July.
We began with a simple discussion about our country, and the direction it has taken since Barack Obama came to power. We shared the usual complaints about the sour economy and liberal social engineering emanating from the rulers in Washington .
But then he said it. The sentence came naturally. I assume it was unplanned. But it carried the weight of a freight train. "You know when Castro took power, none of us knew he was a Communist".
We sat stunned. He continued, "Yes, we all thought he was a patriot, a nationalist. Before the revolution he didn't sound like a radical."
The comparison at this point was easy, and I interjected, "You mean just like Barack Obama?"
He responded; "Yes, just like Barack Obama."
He continued, "We were all shocked as the government just continued to grab more power. First they said the revolution is over, so please turn in your guns. We all complied."
I remember my uncle saying after it started; “Castro will only nationalize some of the big industries. He will never come and take our family hardware store!!” But that is exactly what happened. Castro started with the sugar mills and the large industries, but they eventually came and knocked on the door of our family hardware store. My family had run this store for generations.. They said we now own the hardware store, you work for us. And that nice, large four-bedroom home you own...it is now our property also, and...you can move yourself and five children into two rooms of the house, because others are moving in with you."
The lesson learned from this discussion, is a lesson most Americans refuse to hear. Political leaders can lie about their agenda and once in office...they can take totally unexpected turns.
If you had asked us three years ago if we thought General Motors would be nationalized, we would have never believed it. We could never contemplate a country where the rule of law, the most fundamental building block of a justice society...would be evaporating, just like it did in Castro's Cuba in the early 1960's.
But the news of injustice keeps increasing. Black Panthers are not charged with wrong doing by the U.S. Department of Justice...because their crimes are against whites. The bondholders of GM are stripped of their assets...without due process by the government! Governmental leaders are bribed in full daylight....only to have all investigation of the crimes stifled...by the Attorney General.
The U.S. borders are over run with crime and illegal activity, and the leaders in D.C. act as if it is important to protect the lawbreakers...while the innocent are killed and over run. When local communities attempt to enforce the law, they are ridiculed...and threatened as racists and bigots. They are sued by the very administration...entrusted with enforcing the law.
Without the rule of law, the U.S. Constitution is a sham!! Without the rule of law, our beloved America is swiftly becoming a country where only the well connected and politically powerful will be safe. As Michelle Malkin has so eloquently explained in her recent book...a culture of corruption has replaced honest government.
The only way this problem will be fixed, is by massive citizen action. All honest citizens that want to be treated equally, must come together...and demand that the favoritism, the bribes, the uneven enforcement of law...end now!! And yes, it can happen here.

PLEASE REFER THIS BLOG TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!! And...may God save the United States of America !

Tennis, with the sound off ....

I'm watching some of the Australian Open Tennis Tournament, Novak Djokovich and Ferrer, with the sound off, the grunts, groans and shouts I find distracting. Can you imagine what all sports would be if all the athletes did the same.

A guy at bat, the pitch comes, and the hitter screams at the top of his lungs when he swings at the ball. Or, how about Kobe, loudly grunting every time he took a shot, same with hockey players.

A swimmer, coming up for air, screaming loudly. Think of the noise that could be generated during a football game, 22 big strong guys, loudly grunting at every contact. Just think what the quarterback could burst forth with when he gets sacked by a couple of lineman or line backers.

I think the women screaming I find the most offensive, thankfully, Jennie Finch didn't let out a scream every time she pitched the ball, nor, did the hitters.

I don't remember tennis players years ago making all that noise, wonder when, who and why it started. Isn't it a waste of energy doing that?

Sounds Great, where is it?

Table Service? - Reservations? - Hot and Steamy?
WHITE CASTLE

Their Arsenal is Full

If the Democrats came out with a "negative" campaign about the Republican Candidates, they would cry "Foul." So, they have just let the Republicans make fools of themselves while they just sat back, kicked up their feet, and smiled. Their campaign "armory" is filled. Whoever gets the nomination, they have more than enough material to win the "battle" in November. Courtesy of the Republican Party.

Obama won't have to debate anyone, let them debate among themselves. Candidates "flaws" have already been exposed by the Republican Party. None of the candidates have been made to look electable.

One Republican Candidate will emerge victorious, but he will be so bloodied and bruised that he will be unable to mount any kind of a defense against, what by that time, will be an arsenal filled with political ammunition furnished by the Republican Party itself. It will not be an even playing field by that time.

3 reasons to root for an Obama-Gingrich matchup

Newt is on a roll, and Mitt Romney no longer appears to have a lock on the GOP presidential nomination. Should political junkies root for Newt?

Newt Gingrich's huge win in South Carolina has helped him erase the massive lead enjoyed by longtime frontrunner Mitt Romney, shelving (for now) any talk of Romney as the inevitable GOP nominee.

After his blowout South Carolina win, Gingrich said his job ahead of the next primary, in Florida on Jan. 31, is to convince his party's voters that he's their best bet to beat President Obama in November.

Here, three reasons many voters — both Republicans and Democrats — are hoping for a matchup pitting Gingrich against Obama:

1. The debates would be epic

2. Romney is boring; Gingrich isn't

3. America would get an honest clash of ideas

Doug Lamborn, GOP Congressman From Colorado, Will Boycott Obama's State Of The Union Address

Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) announced plans Monday to boycott President Obama's State of the Union address.

In a statement, Lamborn said he won't be in attendance Tuesday when Obama addresses a joint session of Congress, in protest of his belief that the president will use the high-profile event for political gain. He says he'll watch on television instead and isn't attempting to get his colleagues to follow suit.

Lamborn, who made it clear that it would be the first State of the Union he has skipped, said he "believes the President is in full campaign mode" and will take the opportunity to launch attacks on his "political opponents." He also expressed his disapproval over the administration's rejection of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, as well as Obama's recent decision to recess appoint his nominees to head both the National Labor Relations Board and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Lamborn, who was named the "most conservative" member of Congress by National Journal in 2010, became embroiled in controversy last year when he referred to Obama as a "tar baby." He later apologized in a personal letter to the president.

While Lamborn claims that, as far as he knows, he is the only Republican passing on attending the address, Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) -- who last year tweeted during the address that Obama believed in "socialism" -- claimed that he watched the State of the Union every year from his office.

Not sure how I feel about this. I think I understand his reasons, but not sure if this is the way for him to go to show his concern. I would imagine that every President, in similar circumstances, was accused of the same thing. A politician is always campaigning, that's what they do. Personally, I have never heard of him, until now. Maybe it takes radical measures to be heard .........

Fred Thompson Endorses Newt Gingrich

Former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson told Sean Hannity on Fox News Monday night that he is endorsing Newt Gingrich for president.

Thompson declared that he likes Gingrich's low tax approach which will grow the economy.

Thompson said Newt is "not afraid, he's tough," and added that his federal experience gives him a unique advantage of reforming Washington.

The former Tennessee Senator added that the country is in a "colossal mess" and that the current political situation suggests that "normal rules don't apply."

In discussing his endorsement, Thompson said Gingrich was a strong man who "led a revolution in American politics" during his time as House Speaker. He credited Gingrich with working across the aisle with both parties, particularly in passing welfare reform. "Newt has done his own tough, gritty work" to get things done in American politics, Thompson said.

Thompson said politicians must "stop apologizing" and stand up to the establishment of both parties and the news media to get things done.
"People are frightened," he said. "They want answers."

Thompson said he got into politics to improve things and "leave things a little better" and now he is "ashamed and embarrassed by what our generation is leaving behind."

13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul. We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Maybe, as a politician,  Mitt is a "Jack Mormon"

John Greenman, Burt Lake on Greenman's Point

I will never forget John Greenman. He was the only true pioneer I have ever met and known.

My family used to occasionally vacation at Burt Lake, in Northern Michigan. We started going there in the late 30's. My Dad had built a boat, the Jessidean, a beautiful inboard, powered by a Gray Seascout Engine, triple planked, white, mahogany deck, and it was christened and launched on Burt Lake.

In those days it was a two day trip, generally stopping around Houghton Lake and stayiing in a log cabin "motor inn." Then, on to Indian River, and the excitement was mounting. There we would get our fishing licenses and some new tackle, and the latest "hot" lure for the Walleyes. Then on to Topinabee, and a left would take us up to  the church, past the old graveyard, and on to the lake. A left at the crossroads and in a few miles at the crest of a hill, the first view of Burt Lake, heaven to me in those days.

We rented a cabin from Pauline Everhard (I would have a problem telling you what I did last week, but those memories are still vivid in my mind.) she had a few of them on the lake. Unpack and get moved in, and then a walk up to John Greenman's Store. Big old gruff, cigar smoking John.

We bought our ice from John in those days, ice box in the cabins. I remember pictures of John, out on the ice, a long saw, cutting blocks of ice and sledding them to his ice house, to last the Summer.

My guess is that John had lived in the North all his life, turn of the century. He had built his home, next to the store, out of stones from the lake. To this day I remember the fragrance inside that home. It was a sweet musky fragrance, with a hint of pine, and cigar smoke. I have forgotten Mrs. Greenman's name, it may come to me. She cooked on an old wood stove. Maybe her niece Elaine will see this and let me know.

Mort Wertheimer had a cabin on the lake. He was a well known gambler and ultimate Nevada resident. Many of Detroits underworld spent time on Mullett and Burt Lake. A number of them had places on Burt Lake, and there was an area on Mullett Lake where many had Summer places. Lincoln Fitzgerald who owned the Chesterfield Club in Detroit vacationed and visited the area often. The old Topinabee Hotel on Mullett Lake, which had a railroad stop at their door, entertained many "Detroit" vacationers.

John ruled his store. There were many Indians that frequented the store, and on Saturday night they would congregate at the store, drink beer and eat sardines, right from the can. My Mom wouldn't let me go there on Saturday night, too young, but I did sneak in and spend a little time there, and sometimes we would just sit, talk, and take in the locals. If someone got a little loud or boisterous, a nod or a wiggle of a finger from John, would bring silence to the room. If there is a history of early Michigan printed somewhere, I am sure that there is mention of John Greenman.

In the 40's, there was a new resident on Greenman's Point, John (I am not entirely sure of his first name, rarely heard it, he was Hoppy) Hopkins. As I recall, he was from Detroit, sold pumps, and during the war sold a LOT of pumps, bought a house on the lake, remodeled it (my brother stayed on after we left for home and helped him with the building) and moved to the lake. Hoppie had a Chris Craft, we were fishing with him on one occasions, trolling, and he let me take over the wheel, I fell in love with his boat, and have continued that love affair with antique wooden boats to this day. He went in to politics and eventually bought John's store. Called it Hoppy;s or Hoppies, not sure. His son ran it after he passed, and I am not sure of all of the more recent history.

John Greenman, his store, his wife, his home, and his "point," I will never forget. I have made a number of "jaunts" to Northern Michigan, my wife and kids used to shudder at the mention, they got tired of them, but it is still like heaven to me. My "Bucket List" contains one more trip North, and a visit to Hoppies, and John Greenman's point.

They killed Joe Paterno

Joe Paterno passed away today, my guess, he had given up his will to live.  One mistake in judgement erased a lifetime of commitment.

I am watching on TV, a scene from the Penn State campus, a statue of Joe Paterno, people standing there, silently, showing their respect.

A young couple, somber, wearing Penn State sweatshirts, arm in arm, paying their respects at the statue of "Joepa."

There will never be another coach like Joe.

Obama endorses Romney

It was rumored today, by undisclosed sources close to Reince Priebus, Republican National Committee Chairman,  that Barack Obama has officially endorsed Mitt Romney to be the Republican Candidate for President of the United States. One can only assume, why?

Richie Rich Romney - NON-ELECTABLE

We have a new "front runner" for the title of "non-electable."   I have done a 180 and firmly believe that Richie Rich Romney is NON-ELECTABLE. He showed his true colors last night, a spoiled brat. I'm surprised he did lie down on the floor, throw a "temper tantrum," kick his legs and pound his fists on the floor.

I, for one, was appalled at his lack of graciousness. If his father was still alive, I am sure he would have asked him to go "beat up" Newt. "He beat me, Daddy, he beat me."

God forbid, but picture him in the White House, when some country did something that he didn't like. Don't believe the old adage that "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me." Wrong, in some scenarios, words can lead to a war.

I have looked, and have seen nothing about the Republican Party admonishing him for his lack of "common courtesy and graciousness."

I did some checking on his website and some other venues, no where to get in touch with him. I wanted to send an email. His attitude, "My mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts."

He is a leader to his immediate group of friends, they like his money, it cannot go any farther than that.

Email Address

I have been asked for an email address .

dooleyobserved@yahoo.com

Thanks

ROMNEY is a SAD excuse for a candidate

I have lost all respect for Romney. I thought his concession speech tonight was the most pathetic, sore loser, commentaries I have ever heard. Talk about a gracious loser.

If Romney ultimately wins the nomination, I think I will vote for Obama, I, for one, certainly would not like to have him as our President. I'm sure the White House, now, would like to see Romney as the Republican candidate. There would be NO concern about the outcome in that case.

I imagine the Mormon Church is appalled at his conduct.

I hope the Republican Party comes out with a statement distancing themselves from him.

I may even throw out all my bluejeans, I want NO association with Mitt Romney.

An even sadder commentary on politics in America.

P.S. He reminded me of a spoiled little rich kid who didn't have his way and was lashing out, hey, actually that is probably what happened ...............

Way to go .......... Newt

GINGRICH: I think —

"I think the destructive, vicious, negative nature of much of the news media makes it harder to govern this country, harder to attract decent people to run for public office. And I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that."

NEWT - 1             PRESS - 0

The tide has turned. I think Romney is showing his true colors, NO SPINE .....

In my opinion, HE is not electable .....

Can you imagine a debate between Romney and Obama. It would be devastating for the Republicans, and open the door for another four years for our Muslim Leader.

Just think and imagine, his first four years he has had to be concerned about getting elected, the next four .......... ANYTHING GOES. Remember, NO shoes in the masque, so get clean socks.

10 Year Old Blind Boy with Autism Sings Open the Eyes of My Heart

I just found this link, you MUST watch it.

Despite being blind with autism, this 10 year old boy is an inspiration to all. He still has faith in God and a beautiful gift of music. Listen to him sing Open the Eyes of My Heart. Beautiful.

This may bring a tear to your eyes, at least, if your heart is beating.

http://www.godvine.com/10-Year-Old-Boy-with-Autism-Sings-Open-the-Eyes-of-My-Heart-1041.html

You always have a friend that loves you . regardless

Everything needs a title ...

Been trying to think of something to come up with to put on my blog this morning. Newt's ex-wife is doing an interview sometime this week, I wonder if she will have anything good to say about him. What a great tactic, find a candidates ex-wife, nothing good will  come out of that. All ex wives who have something good to say about their ex-husbands, please stand up

Romney didn't win in Iowa, who cares. Sarah endorses Newt in South Carolina, another who cares. And, then I saw something on the news that rang a bell. School in Westerville, Ohio that is having to make cuts because a levy didn't get passed. Voters there said NO.

I wonder how many of those people will go to the new casino in Columbus when it opens, and lose their money.

Does anyone ever think about where the money comes from to support a casino, make payroll, pay all the utility bills, all the other bills?

ALL that money comes from people LOSING THEIR MONEY. Casinos only manufacture grief. (I speak from experience, I worked in Nevada in casinos for a number of years, as a dealer, box man, floor man, and managed a small casino. I worked in Reno, Lake Tahoe, Sparks, Elko, in a number of clubs.) Does the government support it? NO. Do the casino owners and operators spend their money to support it. NO. It comes from those home owners in Westerville, and around Central Ohio,  who would not spend a few more bucks to support their school system.

Just think how much money has to be lost, by taxpayers, to support the casino. Oh, no, they make their money on food, yea, right. My guess is that their food is a break even situation, with comps, etc.

We have a lottery in Ohio, now, casinos, bingo, a lot of wagering. If we have struck gold in Ohio by opening casinos, why are all those casinos around the country going belly-up.

We are in a sad state of affairs, when one solution to our problem involves people losing their money, in games of chance, where the odds are such, that you eventually lose.

You always hear, "Follow the money."

Romney's Iowa Win Now "Split Decision"

Funny what money can do

Thought Mitt Romney won the Iowa Caucuses?

Not so fast. The state's Republican Party will certify the vote as a "split decision" between Romney and Rick Santorum, citing missing data from eight precincts.

The party had previously named Romney the winner, by a narrow eight-vote margin. But a subsequent count put Santorum up by 34 votes, and the missing data is believed to have been beneficial to Romney.

In the end, officials said, there are just too many holes in the certified total to name a winner.

American Atheists Sue Over World Trade Center Cross

By RESHMA KIRPALANIPHOTO: World Trade Center cross
An atheist group is suing over the inclusion of cross-shaped steel beams, dubbed the "World Trade Center Cross," in the exhibit at the National September 11th Memorial and Museum.

Jane Everhart, who is part of the atheist's suit, derided the cross as nothing more than "ugly piece of wreckage" that "does not represent anything … but horror and death."

Last weekend the 17-foot cross, discovered in the rubble of 9/11, was given a "ceremonial blessing" by the Rev. Brian Jordan, removed from it's temporary post near St. Peter's Church and lowered 70 feet into its permanent home inside the museum.

But a group identified as American Atheists filed a lawsuit today claiming the inclusion of the cross-shaped steel beams promotes Christianity over all other religions on public property and diminishes the civil rights of non-Christians.

"The Christian community found a piece of rubble that looked like an icon and they deified it. But really 9/11 had nothing to do with Christianity," said American Atheists president Dave Silverman. "They want a monopoly and we don't want that to happen."

"It just so happens that the WTC was made out of T-joints and they found a T-joint," Silverman said. "They put it in the church, kept in the church for years, prayed over it, blessed it. You don't get to do that just in the coincidence that your icon looks like a T-joint."

Mitt Romney Sent Millions to Mormon Church

By MATTHEW MOSK and BRIAN ROSS | ABC News – Tue, Jan 17, 2012

Underscoring the prominent, if little discussed role that Mitt Romney played as a Mormon leader, the private equity giant once run by the GOP presidential frontrunner carved his church a slice of several of its most lucrative business deals, securities records show, providing it with millions of dollars worth of stock in some of Bain Capital's most well-known holdings.

Romney has always been a major donor to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which requires that members "tithe," or give 10 percent of their income to the church. His family charity, called the Tyler Foundation, has given more than $4 million to the church in the past five years, including $1.8 million in 2008 and $600,000 in 2009. But because Romney, whose fortune has been estimated at $250 million, has never released his personal tax returns, the full extent of his giving has never been public.

Newly uncovered stock contributions made during Romney's Bain days suggest there is another dimension to Romney's support for the church -- one that could involve millions more than has been previously disclosed.

The Cathedrals ..... in admiration

When time permits, and you are in a good mood, I want you to listed to the song on the link below.

It is one of the last appearances of the Cathedrals, a gospel quarter. This was one of, if not the last, appearance they did on their farewell series. The two older gentlemen are George Younce and Glenn Payne, two of the most prominent men in gospel music, they are both gone now.

I think the nicest tribute to them is the reaction of the audience, mostly gospel singers and admirers of theirs, as you can tell by their reactions. At the end of Glenn's last solo, the audience comes to their feet, and to me, the greatness tribute of all is the enthusiastic applause they get from The Statler Brothers. The Statlers have sung to millions, and I think Glenn and George were instrumental in one way or another in their careers, but they are brought to their feet, hands clapping in pure, absolute, admiration. What a tribute that is to ones career.

9 Things You Shouldn't Buy at Grocery Stores

By Wise Bread | U.S.News & World Report LP – Tue, Jan 17, 2012 9:39 AM EST

Grocery stores offer plenty of conveniences to make food-buying as simple as possible. Most of us head to the grocery store to pick up fresh produce, meats, cheeses, snacks, and other convenience foods, and you can pick from dozens of brands and generic items that fit your budget. Still, there are a few things you don't want to pick up at your local supermarket. Certain types of produce are full of pesticides and you'll be better off heading to the local farmers market or buying organic. Buying non-grocery items at the supermarket usually means you'll spend much more than the average price in your area.

Here are nine items you shouldn't pick up from the grocery store:

1. Cosmetics and skin care items. Even though many grocery stores are stocked with popular brands of cosmetics and skin care products, you'll probably pay a premium for every item. Head to your nearest chain drugstore, Walmart, or Super Target if you want to stock up on or sample makeup, moisturizer, cleansers, and scrubs.
2. Pre-ground coffee. Some grocery stores offer great prices on coffee beans that you can grind right in the store, but buying pre-ground coffee could put a dent in your grocery budget. The mark-up on pre-ground coffee is relatively high and you could get a much better deal on large coffee cans at your neighborhood big-box store. Remember you can also track down coupons and vouchers for certain brands.
3. Party supplies. As convenient as it is to pick up candles, balloons, and other party supplies for that last-minute get together, you'll end up paying a high price solely out of convenience. Plan to make a pit stop at the local dollar store or party supply store to take advantage of lower prices.
4. Kitchen appliances. Whether you're in the market for a new toaster, blender, or food processor, do your homework and track down a great price on kitchen appliances online. Grocery stores typically carry a very small stock of these items and you probably won't even find a quality brand. Stick with big-box stores and online merchants for your kitchen appliances and other small electronics.
5. Hardware. Light bulbs, extension cords, nails, and small tools don't come cheap at the grocery store. Again, these are considered to be specialty goods at a grocery store and most will only have a very small inventory of hardware items. Stick with big-box retailers, the dollar store, or even your local hardware store when you need to stock up.
6. Cookware and bake ware. If you're suddenly inspired to cook a banquet-style meal when shopping at the grocery store, make sure you pick up your basic supplies elsewhere. Cookware and bake ware items are usually heavily marked up at the grocery store and you could end up paying almost double the price for your items. Make a list of what you need then head out to a store that has a larger inventory of these specialty items.
7. Some fruits and veggies. PBS put together two lists of fruits and vegetables that are worth buying-and not buying-at the grocery store, based on the level of pesticides and chemicals present in each items. The recommendation is to stick with organic varieties of apples, bell peppers, peaches, strawberries and potatoes. Grocery stores are your best bet for fruits and vegetables like asparagus, sweet peas, eggplant, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, and onions.
8. Gourmet cheese. The deli section of most grocery stores is stocked with pricey items that also have a very short shelf life. If you're looking for cheese, head to the dairy section where you'll find processed varieties for a fraction of the price of the fresh, gourmet options. If it's gourmet cheese you're after, keep an eye out for deals on offerings from daily deal sites at local wine and cheese stores in your area. You can also get better pricing on cheese at your local warehouse club.
9. Name-brand spices. Fresh spices are another gourmet food item that you're probably paying a premium for at the grocery store. Your best bet? The ethnic food markets and local ethnic food stores. Some big-box stores also tend to stock a large spice inventory and will price these at lower price points than your neighborhood grocery store. Consider buying in bulk from the ethnic market to save even more.

Something to think about ..............

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- ABC News Anchor Bill Weir just found out he’s at major risk for a heart attack and may not see his 50th birthday. Weir is just 44 years old.

Weir’s job actually saved his life. While working on a story about the doctor who treated Steve Jobs, Weir had a full body CT scan. When the test was over, Weir said his doctor – Dr. David Agus -- told him, “Boy, I’m glad we caught this. You have heart disease and probably within the next five years you would have gone for a jog and dropped dead.”

“I was blown away,” Weir said.

Weir thought he was healthy, turns out, his routine was all wrong.

“I always went to the gym in morning, worked out hard for an hour and figured that covered me for the rest of the day. Turns out, that rigorous exercise early and then 10 hours of sitting is as dangerous as or more dangerous than smoking,” Weir continued.

The doctor told Bill to keep the workout, but to lose the sitting all day. Weir’s cell phone now beeps every hour to remind him to get up and walk around for five minutes. Weir is also trying to cut out the junk food and eat more salad and fruit.

“But I also ate everything I ever wanted, ya know, ribs cheese burgers, six pack of beer and I thought I’d just work it off at the gym the next day and that combination was clogging up my heart,” Weir said. Weir’s doctor didn’t specify any specific foods to stay away from, but he did say it’s about all things in moderation.

As for those full body scans, they’re controversial because of the radiation exposure and the chance of finding something that would never cause problems. But, Dr. Agus thinks in the right hands, they can change medicine. More about the doctor in his book called “The End of Illness” and more about Bill Weir on ABC News Nightline beginning tonight at 11:30 p.m.

Tips on pumping gas

This was an earlier post, but I have been asked to post it again.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon.

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Unlike service stations, every truck that is loaded is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Well worth reading .......... a good thought

A young couple moved into a new neighborhood.
The next morning while they are eating breakfast,
The young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside. "That laundry is not very clean", she said. "She doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap."
Her husband looked on, but remained silent.
Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, the young woman would make the same comments.
About one month later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband: "Look, she has learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this."
The husband said, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows."
And so it is with life. What we see when watching others depends on the purity of the window through which we look!

I have lived through much of the change .........

Today is Martin Luther King Day, 2012.

I was born in 1932, and I was introduced to my Mother, Father, Brother, and Sadie. I think I knew that Sadie worked for my family, but to me she was family. I knew she had different colored skin, but she was just Sadie.

We had neighbors on Brown Street, in Dayton, Ohio, who occasionally used the N word in negative ways, so I guess I learned early that "they" were somehow different. Sadie put in her days work, and then went home after the dinner dishes were done. She had a large part in raising me, through high school. She "covered" for me a few times, helped me take care of Rags, my dog, and was a part of our family, up to a point.

Friends would ask about Mom and Dad and Dean, and generally, "How is Sadie?" On one occasion, and one occasion only, my guess is I was 7 or 8. I wanted to do something, and Sadie told me I couldn't. I got made and caller her the N word. To this day, one of the worst days of my life, the feelings I had, after I blurted that out. I have regretted that probably more than anything else I have done in my life.

Riding the old Brown Street Bus, never gave it a second thought, but "they" generally sat in the back of the bus. I can't say I am sure of that, because I never thought of it, and if they did it was just accepted.

Then, 1950, I went away to college in Charleston, South Carolina at The Citadel. Freshmen, or plebes, in the mess hall, were responsible for holding up empty platters and bowls, so they, the colored ladies that worked there, would take them back to the kitchen and get them refilled. I held up a platter, no one came, I yelled, in a rather loud voice, "Maam." All those around me were shocked. "That is not a Maam, that is a N word." I got my first demerits for that.

During my time there I heard many stories of pranks, mistreatment, and realized how Southerners actually felt and reacted  toward blacks. I was a fan of some black entertainers. Little Esther was performing in town. I went, had to sit isolated up in the balcony, separated.

I was not aware of any problems in the Navy in the early 50's, even though we were predominately white.

Then, in 1956, in Reno, blacks were not allowed in the casinos. There again, never gave any thought to it until I became good friends with an entertainer, Billy Ward and his Dominos. Billy could entertain on the stage at the Golden, but was not allowed out on the floor after the show. They had rooms in the Golden, and spent most of their off time in their rooms. On occasions we would have them out to our house for a home cooked meal. I had a friend, white girl, who saw his picture and wanted to meet him. I had to sneak them up to his room. They eventually got married, moved to California where mixed marriages were more in style.

Late fifties or early sixties, an incident occurred at The Primm  where we had a "situation" arise, a white woman lost money on the 21 table, her husband entered the club, he was black. Many phone calls went out all over Nevada, I am sure, and the doors opened for all. And, I was a part of it, kinda neat.

So, in my 79 years I have lived through the entire scenario. Sammy Davis could appear at the The Mapes, a police escort with sirens blaring, limos, coming up South Virginia, a grand entrance, but they had to leave the hotel right after his show, probably in 1956.

There have been many changes during that time, and I still can't use the N word.

Another Monday Thought

Ron Paul is NOT Electable. I've heard that said many times and heard it even more often on TV. Who started that and why? What a great strategy, just say that he is not electable and go on your way.

But then, I got to wondering who started that and why, it's a statement that is easy to overlook. Just a little "off hand" statement that doesn't get a second thought, and "closes the door" for further investigating.  Then I asked myself, Why? I read this article .

"Contrary to the false propaganda proclaiming that Dr. Ron Paul is “not electable”, his numbers are rising, his support growing and he stands an excellent chance of winning both the GOP nomination and the 2012 presidential race.

Dr. Paul’s opponents are desperate to stop Americans from listening to, and subsequently electing Ron Paul. Opponents of liberty falsely present Ron Paul as “unelectable” to the American people, attempting to plant subconscious seeds doubt of “don’t listen to him, don’t vote for him in the primaries or caucuses because he’ll never win”. This strategy is failing as more Americans hear Dr. Paul speak, leading them to contribute to his campaign and vote for him. The American public understands Dr. Paul’s common sense approach and trusts him. The other candidates are clearly in the race to serve their egos and personal agendas. The “Dr. Paul is not electable” rumors are deliberately created and spread solely as a calculated attempt to confuse honest, hard-working American with falsehoods such as “Ron Paul is crazy, anti-women, anti-Israel and anti-blacks. He’s isolationist, he’ll wreck the country, he’s anti-government”. These are simple “control the masses” fear tactics to try and stop Americans from actually listening to Dr. Paul, hearing his logical and intelligent plan and deciding for themselves."

Just remember who told you he could not get elected and more importantly, WHY?

Listen to the man and then judge, don't eliminate him as a candidate. Dewey couldn't lose. Truman couldn't win, Carter couldn't win, Nixon ........... will just leave it there . My Dad was an OBGYN, he would have made a great President.

A Monday Morning Thought

It's quiet, very quiet, cold, no cars, no TV yet, and a thought came to me, before I put the coffee on. Why do we need to create so many jobs? That's all  you hear, job creation. I got to wondering, what do we need to be produced.

Walmart is full, Krogers is full, Meijers is full, went shopping yesterday, and Kohl's was full of product, so much so they were having big sales. II don't think there is a shortage in the auto industry.

If Barack, or someone, gave me a ton of money to start a business, a manufacturing plant, a farm, something, I don't know what it would be. There are more cell phones than there are people, I hear. Just where and what would be have all the unemployed do?

Maybe we don't need any more jobs. If we bring back all those jobs that have gone elsewhere, and produce all those products  here, instead of China or Mexico, we probably couldn't afford them. And if we brought them all back, those countries would become a problem and our government, in its infinite wisdom, would have to bail them out, so monetarily, we are back where we started.

I got an email the other day that cited many stores and products, that if you look around in a store, you can find something that is made in the USA that would be equal or lesser in price, IF you just check a little.

If the present work force, around the world, is supplying the needs of the majority, what to do with those who are not working?

What steps do we take, to put the unemployed to work, to supply those  in need? Remember too, that those in need have no means to purchase the products they need, to compensate the unemployed for their labor.

Create jobs, to do what? Put the unemployed to work, to do what? Technology and "progress" has eliminated many jobs. It now takes less people to do more work, that creates a problem.

Don Eammelli

Late fifties, I went to work at The Primm in Reno. It was somewhat of a "step up" from where I had worked before. I was hired by one of the finest gentlemen I had ever known, Mr. Alan Roberts, and it was owned by another gentlemen, Mr. Ernie Primm.

I was put on the "graveyard" shift, 3 AM till 11 AM. I had worked a lot of graveyard and really liked those hours. You could either do your partying in the morning after work, or the time before you went on shift. I must admit I don't remember my first day, pretty nervous entering into this new, different way of dealing craps. Each club has its own way of dealing, and that was how it was done, and, they got bigger "action" at the Primm, and that made me nervous.

My graveyard boss turned out  to be Don Eammelli. He put me at ease right away. I eventually learned some of his background. He was from Steubenville, Ohio, a starting place for a number of casino employees. Don had also been a band leader in his younger days.

My first night, break time, Don challenged me to call a heads or tails on a silver dollar, to determine who bought the coffee. Don won. Don always won. His "flip" was so practiced that he could determine whether heads or tails by where he caught the coin. He sometimes would come over to the table and make a bet of one kind or another, he always won.

Early on, Don took me to a casino and introduced me to to the shift manager, Joe Hill. While we were talking, he opened a new pack of cards for a change on a 21 table. He rippled them a few times, fanned them, and said, "Uh Oh, a factory marked deck," and proceeded to turn over cards, naming them. Then he explained how sometimes, when they are trimming the deck that a blade gets a nick or something in it, and marks the deck. "Can't use those."

Don had him give them to me, good training for the future, check out the deck and learn for yourself. I took the deck home, used a magnifying glass, spent hours, looking for the mark. Don made me labor over that deck for a week or so. Then one morning, he laughed, said that Joe had marked them during the few short manipulations he had done while he had the cards. My lesson, don't trust anyone, don't believe what you see, and don't doubt what someone says they can do.

Don owned a number of houses and apartments around town. We rented one from him. I occasionally went with him to do maintenance on them and check things out. Don limped, had lost a leg in a car accident, he had done some work for the bank, and was driving back to Reno in a "repo" and had a wreck.

Don trained me, and helped me out, and eventually, I was given the opportunity to "sit box," next step up the ladder from a dealer, sit in the middle of the table, keep an eye on the customers, keep an eye on the dealers, hand out meal tickets, be nice to the customers, and try to look the part. I bought some Louie Roth suits, with cuffs on the sleeves, white on white monogrammed shirts, a Gensler Lee watch, with 33 diamonds on the face, alligator shoes, with tassels, tried really hard to look the part.

Don could leave the pit, sit at the bar, drinking water, check things out in the mirror on the back bar, and know everything that was going on in the pit.

One morning, there was an oriental playing 21, and Don was sitting at the bar watching him in the mirror. He was betting in a familiar pattern, like a "card marker" and I strolled over to Don to mention it to him. "I know, let him bet a few more hands." Then he casually strolled into the pit, got a few new decks out of the drawer, changed cards on one table, then casually changed them on the one where the oriental was playing. He said nothing, let him get another deck marked, Don changed them again. We took him for quite a bit of money before he caught on to what Don was doing.

Don was a "marker" and a "counter" and knew what to do when they sat down to play. That is how and why he so many properties around town. Don's problem, when gambling, he would get ahead, they would buy him drinks, then he would start losing, not all the time.

One evening, Don needed some extra money to make payments. Payed one of our security guards to follow him around, and when he got so much ahead, make him leave, and go home. They went to Harrah's Club, Don was "counting" .... a count system he had originated. He wanted to teach it to me, but I was afraid to learn, and, he was much smarter and had a much better mind than I did. His count system was simple, as cards were shown, he remembered three numbers, and those numbers let him know what his odds of winner were.

Don started winning, drinks started flowing his way, they all knew him, he got to his amount to leave, his guard came to the table, "Come on Don, time to leave." Don called security over, said the man was bothering him, them escorted him out, Don lost his money, and went home.

I could write a book about Don, and what he did, and what we did to him, pin wheel watches, a product that cleaned drains, having a picnic and eating chicken, in the median area, on South Virginia, cars whizzing by, the Cattysark and Milk Fund, Joe Conforte, Del Ray, the magician, so many stories.

I hope Don is still in Reno, and perhaps reads this. I think his two children still live there, not sure about Don. It would be nice to let him know what an important part he played in my life. If things had unfolded differently, who knows, I had some great people on my side.

Thanks, Don.

Sunday Morning in Ohio, 1.15.12

Cold and snowy, but the sun is out right now, so it makes it brighter out. Now, what to write about this morning?

Was going to watch TV, but after scanning the channels I realized that was a waste of time. Ice Road Truckers, Pickers, Gold Mining, Swamp Logging, were my  best choices. Caleb, our dog, has asked to go out five times now. He just sits and stares at me. I tell him, NO, but he sits and stares and I eventually let him out. He stays out a minute or so and wants back in. Nice little game we play. He has us trained well. When we go to the store, he expects us to buy him a toy, so he can search through the bags till he finds it. He has quite a LARGE pile of toys.

I realize why we have stayed in Ohio all this time. We have Summer, nice and warm, sit in the sun, then we have Winter, cold and snowy and windy. In the Winter, I look forward to Spring and Summer. If it wasn't for Winter, I wouldn't know the difference, always have something to look forward to, that way.

Just like now, looking forward to Spring Training and baseball season. Then, when that rolls around, I can start looking forward to college football season, then basketball, always something to look forward to, that's what makes my world go around, always something to look forward to. But, I think I could force myself to live in Key West. But, then again, I know people who lived there, and they wanted to move farther North in Florida, too hot and too buggy. Grass is always "greener" I guess.

Politics, I really don't think that I understand it. What are these Primaries for? I thought there was a Republican Platform. Don't all the Republicans adhere to that, if so, what are they debating about. The really sad part of the whole scenario, they are spending millions, if not billions that could be put to better use, and when it is all over there will be a picture of them, arm in arm, good friends.

A thought for the day: We are destroying our Democracy ....... I think I am of the opinion that Democracy is destroying our Democracy, the very things that make it great, are destroying it. We certainly are NOT what we used to be. It used to be that an American never went to a foreign country.

We are still somewhat that way. Not thinking, I was driving, and I once said to my wife, "A lot of New Jersey license plates." She replied with, "We are IN New Jersey."

The "quietness" on the news is frightening. A cruise ship ran aground, the primaries in South Carolina, some award shows, of which there are many, no real catastrophes to report on, all the "big" news folks are stranded in cold New York and Washington, wishing that something would happen in Florida or Vegas, or somewhere warm, so they could load up all their equipment and head to a warmer climate.

Caleb is at my feet, staring at me. I am trying to ignore him. What a face, those eyes so intent, he looks so sad and forlorn, and all he wants me to do is put him on his leash and put him out.

OK, he wins.

Another How it used to Be

I am somewhat a sports fan, have been all of my life.

Presently watching a rerun of an Ohio State, Michigan game from 1969. How times have changed.

NO tribal dances after making a good play or a touchdown, they acted like they had done it before, gave the ball to the official, no "high fives," none of those jumping into each other, not sure what that means. I always felt that if I was a coach I would insist they save their energy for the game and not use it up in "tribal exhibitions."

NO TV replays of each play, 2 or 3 or 4 or more times. NO red flags to determine if the call was correct or not.

The field and surrounding area are void of advertising, no scoreboard at the bottom of the screen to let me know the score and the down and the time and the temperature and upcoming TV shows. There is a small gold M on the 50 yard line, yard markers and nothing more.

AND ...... ONE announcer, Keith Jackson, not a press box full of "experts," there is someone in the booth with him, but he says very little.  Actually, in this game, and I remember watching it at a local bar, the Draft House, which I owned at the time, Ohio State was highly favored to win the game. Bo and Woody were the coaches. VIP seats were a row of benches against the brick wall that surrounds the playing field. On the sidelines were a few cameramen, cheerleaders and the teams.

Game is almost over, big upset, Michigan is going to win. Game is over. Ohio State sideline is sad, Michigan sideline is happy, "the upset of the century," both teams are leaving the field, together, no big celebration, they just played a game, and one team won. Woody is walking off, no police escort, Bo is walking off, no police escort, no microphones being shoved in their faces. They played a football game to see who could win, not to sell Honda s, and, their were NO TV timeouts for commercials.

I miss those days, just pure football, the focus was on the game, how great was that?

A WHY just occurred to me

Just saw a commercial on TV, naturally, about a company having a sale on tires.

Made me wonder, why are there different qualities of tires? The 40,000 mile tire was on sale. My concern, am I safer on an expensive tire than in a cheaper one? Are those who can afford the more expensive tire safer than I am on the set I can afford.

What is the difference between a cheap tire and an expensive tire? Quality, safety, endurance, a car I understand, you pay more money for a name and more luxury. What happens if you take an expensive car and put cheap tires on it?

Why don't they make all tires the same? Ironic, in a way. If you can't afford the expensive ones, you settle on cheaper ones, that you get less mileage from, so you have to buy tires more often. If the expensive ones last twice as long, well you see where that goes, and you apparently are safer in the expensive ones.

I remember years ago when we bought "recaps." How unsafe were they, if you got a bad one, the tread would come off, but, I was younger than, and things like that didn't seem to worry me.

Today, 40,000 miles is about one-third of the life of a car, just look at the mileage on the cars in used car lots.

There is Power, Power, Wondrous Working Power ......

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama will ask Congress on Friday for greater power to shrink the federal government, and he would start by trying to merge six major trade and commerce agencies whose overlapping programs can be baffling to businesses, the White House said Friday.

The Commerce Department would be among those that would cease to exist.

In an election year and a political atmosphere of tighter spending, Obama's motivation is about improving a giant bureaucracy, but that is hardly all of it.

To voters sick of dysfunction, Obama wants to show some action on making Washington work better. Politically, his plan would allow him to do so by putting the onus on Congress and in particular his Republican critics in the House of Representatieves and the Senate, to show why they would be against the pursuit of a leaner government.

Obama will ask Congress to give him a type of reorganizational power last held by a president when Ronald Reagan was in office in the early 1980s.

The Obama version would be a so-called consolidation authority allowing him to propose mergers that promise to save money and help consumers.

The deal would entitle him to an up-or-down vote from Congress in 90 days.

It would be up to lawmakers, therefore, to grant Obama this fast-track authority and then decide whether to approve any of his specific ideas.

And now, you know the rest of the story .......

Pam's Story ......................

In a recent email, I read about a woman named Pam, who knows the pain of considering abortion. More than 24 years ago, she and her husband Bob were serving as missionaries to the Philippines and praying for a fifth child. Pam contracted amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in contaminated food or drink. She went into a coma and was treated with strong antibiotics before they discovered she was pregnant.

Doctors urged her to abort the baby for her own safety and told her that the medicines had caused irreversible damage to her baby. She refused the abortion and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted. Pam said the doctors didn't think of it as a life, they thought of it as a mass of fetal tissue.

While pregnant, Pam nearly lost their baby four times but refused to consider abortion. She recalled making a pledge to God with her husband: If you will give us a son, we’ll name him Timothy and we’ll make him a preacher.

Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and eventually gave birth to a healthy baby boy August 14, 1987. Pam’s youngest son is indeed a preacher. He preaches in prisons, makes hospital visits, and serves with his father’s ministry in the Philippines . He also plays football. Pam’s son is Tim Tebow.

The University of Florida ’s star quarterback became the first sophomore in history to win college football’s highest award, the Heisman Trophy. His current role as quarterback of the Denver Broncos has provided an incredible platform for Christian witness. As a result, he is being called The Mile-High Messiah.

Tim’s notoriety and the family’s inspiring story have given Pam numerous opportunities to speak on behalf of women’s centers across the country. Pam Tebow believes that every little baby you save matters. I pray her tribe will increase!

May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always!
