The sheriff's department declined to identify the driver, who was pronounced dead at 11:15 ET Saturday, but according to multiple witnesses it was 20-year-old Kevin Ward.
The incident took place at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. Stewart and Ward were racing into Turn 2 when Stewart's car drifted into the top lane off the corner and Ward's car went spinning into the wall. According to multiple witnesses, Ward got out of his car to confront Stewart. As Stewart drove by, his car struck Ward, launching him down the track.
The OCSD said there were no charges pending as of early Sunday morning and that Stewart has been cooperative.
This could become an OJ event. I am not a big race fan, anymore. Stewart has the reputation of being a "hot head." Could there have been a moment of "don't come after me." Others seemed to avoid the 20 year old. I imagine the "fraternity" of drivers have their own opinion of what happened, and if that opinion is as I think it might be, Steward now should drive for "Target" ... he has one on his back, anyway. He apparently opted to not drive tonight in a race, probably a smart move on Stewart's part, he might have had to face some animosity, to say the least. My hunch would be that Ward's family will settle for nothing less than a murder or manslaughter charge .... not sure how it will end up, but I think that Stewart's racing career may be over.
