The good old days ............... of racing

This is how I spent many a Sunday in the 40's, out at Funks Speedway watching the races. Open wheel, no roll bars, just good racing.

This was before the track was paved. It was called the "fastest" 1/2 mile, high banked track in the world.

Unfortunately I have seen a few killed on this track. The first, and never forgotten, Grandpappy Booker, a well known driver, flipped on the backstretch, never forget that scene. There were some others, but forget their names. One was a well known driver who also drove at Indy. Saw "Spider" Webb, Maury Rose,  and many of the well-known drivers of the day.

Midgets on Friday night, Stocks on Saturday and the Sprints on Sunday. The Midgets ran on a track that was inside the big 1/2 mile oval. Great racing in those days ...................
