MTA Bridges and Tunnels Officer Critical After Being Struck by Car on Verrazano-Narrows

An MTA Bridges and Tunnels officer is in critical condition after being struck by a car on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Sunday morning.

According to the MTA, Officer Thomas Choi was reopening the bridge's lower level roadway to traffic at 7:45 a.m., when he was hit by a Nissan Maxima and catapulted 10 feet in the air.

Choi, 61, suffered severe pelvic and head injuries and was unconscious when he was taken to Staten Island University North Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The driver of the Maxima remained at the scene and no other injuries were reported.

Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident.

Choi, a Staten Island resident, is a 10-year veteran officer of the MTA Bridges and Tunnels.

“The entire Bridges and Tunnels family is saddened by this tragic event," said Bridges and Tunnels President Jim Ferrara. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Choi, his family and all of his colleagues who work with him daily.”
