It is Saturday morning, 9:15, and College Game Day is on TV. They are at Clemson in South Carolina and there is a mob of people there, many carrying signs, but all yelling and shouting at the top of their lungs, a frenzied scene, all about football. Much of this country goes "nuts" about football. It will be on ALL day today and much of tomorrow, and other evenings during the week.
Baseball is still on, last night was Midnight Madness, the start of basketball season, sports, sports, sports, it is never ending, why are SPORTS so big?
The Cavemen used to see who could throw a stone the farthest, who could run the fastest, and I'm sure they had other games. The Romans used to see how long Christians could last with Lions. Just occurred to me, why not rename the Washington Redskins, the Washington Christians. Think of the publicity on that game, the Lions versus the Christians. Just a thought.
All sports are big, but none as big as football, why?
Without knowing all the technical aspects of the game, it is easy to understand. The ball starts here, and you take it across that line down there, you score. Easy to understand. But, more than that. In some cases, it is a week-long event. Not just a few hours on Saturday afternoon. Travel, pep rally's, cold weather, Coon skin coats, tailgate parties, a whole world of "tradition" goes with the game. Most other sports, you go to the game, it is played, and you go home. Not football, it is more than a game, it is an event.
I don't think anyone tailgates at basketball or baseball, especially not golf. Anyone can go to the pep rally, eat and drink at the tailgate party, go to the game, scream and shout, go to a post game party, and not even know, or care, who won. They, TV, has made the game, bigger than it actually is. It is now a "television show" built around a game. These guys on TV are telling me how exciting ALL of these games are going to be.
I know of people who travel to Columbus, Ohio on a Game Day Saturday, some in RV's, but they set up elaborate cooking machines, tables, flags, etc., cook, sit and talk, drink a bit, and not go to the game, they watch it on TV.
It's a little dark outside, cloudy, perhaps some rain, but I feel I should go out on the porch, get my little grill going, take my bottle of Gilbeys with me, do some ribs and chicken and burgers, yell and shout and wave when a car goes by, wear a team sweatshirt, and really "get in to the game." My main concern, I have a Michigan sweatshirt, my neighbors are all Ohio State fans, I hope they are good sports.
They are having so much fun on TV, they are all keyed up, having a great time. Part of that is due to the money they make and the "stardom" they have achieved by being "Football Analysts."

Television is one daylong commercial interrupted periodically by inept attempts to fill the airspace in between them.If you can't start a fire, perhaps your wood is wet ....
