Friday Morning Musings

I pick my wife up at Harry and David each day she works. If I'm early I park close to the circular driveway where she comes out. I get to people watch. One thing in particular stands out, they are hiring for the Christmas Holidays, but, I have yet to see anyone, walk in and apply for work, that is not wearing either blue jeans or shorts, some in T-shirts or sweatshirts, a few wearing flip-flops, not one was dressed up in any way for a preliminary interview. I remember many years ago, at Oakwood High School, in Dayton, Ohio, in a Civics Class, we were taught how to dress. I am not sure I even ever wore jeans to school in those days. Jeans were a sign of poverty. Now, jeans and a sweat shirt with the name of some band on the front is apparently acceptable. Times have changed. And, if they get hired, they are only going to spend their time on a telephone taking orders, no one sees them, so I guess it is OK.

Telephones. Where was all the talking done before the advent of cell phones. Now, about every other car has a driver talking on the phone. In Walmart the other day, so many people, talking on their phones, asking questions, getting answers, unable to think for themselves. WHY do all those people think that I want to hear their telephone conversations. We were at the hospital the other day on a weekly visit, my wife said, "I need to call Melissa, where is a pay phone?" Yea, right!
