Looking back ..... at Easter

Easter Sunday, no vivid memories like Christmas, but all pleasant ones, new suit, new shoes, church service, like most "holidays," a lot of candy. My Mom had decorations for each holiday, carefully stored in the attic and brought out each year.

One I will never forget, a four foot rabbit, dressed just like Johnny, the long ears coming up through that pillbox hat. It was, I think rare, and had been a limited promotional item for Phillip Morris cigarettes. An advertising executive friend and patient of my Dad's gave it to us. It was an annual visitor in our home.

My Mom's sister, Aunt Eva, the pianist, lived in Marion, Indiana, and each year they put on a Easter Pageant very early on Easter Sunday morning. Eva was the pianist. WLW radio broadcast the event, and we often were gotten up, very early, to head downstairs, gather around the old Philco radio, and listen to the event. Every time there was a piano solo, we knew it was Eva.

I remember one Sunday, at the old EUB Church that we attended in Dayton, some of my age group friends were standing out in front of the church and assisting in opening the door and greeting them. It started raining, and one gentleman came running in.

"How do you like this weather," I said.

"It's good for the ducks, but not for us Drakes.

Mr. Drake used that line often, when appropriate. Have never forgotten his comment
