Manuel Garlikov GARLIKOV, Manuel L. age 85, of Monroe, passed away Friday, July 20, 2007 at the Mount Pleasant Retirement Village. Published in Dayton Daily News on July 22, 2007 |
What is this post all about.Well Manuel was a friend of my brothers, they graduated from Steele High School in Dayton, Ohio in 1939. He was a family friend. When Manual got married, my Dad was their Doctor and brought their children into this world. My brother was a good student. One family saying I have heard all of my life, uttered by his Mother, "Manuel, vhy dont u be schmart like Dean." The were Jewish, and she spoke that way.
We had our home and medical office together, same house. Nothing in writing, but some friends, relatives, when coming to see the "Doctor" ... could wait in our living room rather than his waiting room. Roslyn, Manuel, and family, were on that list. A rather exclusive list, at that.
Manuel and his family were involved in many things. We got a basket of fruit every year, I think up till my Dad passed away. I think Manuel came up for my Mom's funeral, not sure about Dad's. When my Brother passed away in Arizona, I tried to locate his old friends. All, or most had passed, except Manual. He got on a plane and flew to AZ. I just found this today. One odd thing, he was living where our Son Brad is living today, Monroe, NC. Just found that odd, and worth a mention.
My first taste of racism occurred, I am thinking in Atlanta. We were on family trip somewhere, and we needed to check in to a hotel. My Dad, the Doctor, had black hair and dark eyes. Wherever we were, and I was little, but I remember ... whispering ... outrage .... they would not let us have a room until Dad proved that he was not Jewish. I remember the conflict in my mind about that, because of the Garlikov's and other Jewish friends we had ... we got a taste of Antisemitism, and we weren't even Jewish. I have never forgotten that incident, how I felt, and have always kept that in mind in my relationships with all people.
He was a close and dedicated family friend, well worth a posting here .................. and, related to an incident that had a great impact on my life ........
