That thought entered my mind, this morning, while I was making coffee ... Years are just not what they used to be.
They used to be a lot longer, they used to be broken up by "Seasons." On the news last night, I think in Columbus, Ohio, someone, along with Walmart, are collecting school supplies in a school bus, for the kids, for next year, and, school was just out for the Summer. On TV, they are advertising the new Fall Shows, it isn't even Summer yet.
Somehow they have condensed 365 days down to about 90. Summers used to be much longer. We got out of school in early June, went back in late September, a long Summer. A school memory came back to me yesterday. In '43, we moved from our home, now called the Inner City, in Dayton, out to Oakwood, which was a nice suburb, grass and trees. My first day of school, I walked to school, when school was out at 3, I walked out the front door, and Mr. Watts, the maintenance head, was mowing the grass. A three gang, reel type mower, and he was riding on a sulky type seat. And, then I smelled it, freshly cut grass. Living, surrounded by concrete, downtown, it was an unfamiliar odor. It was pleasant and I liked it. Until, we had a half acre of grass with many terraces, some steep, and then for many years, I mowed it, with a variety of mowers over the years.
Seasons are not "distinct" anymore, they run together, I think retailers are responsible for it. In their anxiety to make sales, they start selling seasonal items as quickly as they can. We used to have only Winter and Summer, the other two were just "transitional" times.
My years are now marked by March Madness, Football Season, The Super Bowl, The Kentucky Derby, The Indianapolis 500, The Little League World Series and others.
I am thankful, they keep rolling around. At the conclusion of one of them, I often wonder if it is my last, but, they keep rolling around. I give my Thanks to Him for that.
