Saturday Morning

Years ago, a Saturday morning meant no school, two days off, Saturday was an adventure. It used to mean sleeping in, cowboy movies at the Ohio Theater in Dayton, Hoot Gibson, Johnny Mac Brown, Harry Carey, Tim Holt, a whole afternoon of Westerns.

These along with those Serials, Ace Drummond, Zorro's Fighting Legion, all cliffhangers, left you hanging for a whole week. The popcorn, have never eaten any that was better, generally accompanied by Milk Duds, or  JoJo Beans, I think they were called. Spent many Saturday afternoons in that old theater.

Later, in the early fifties, I attended The Citadel, in Charleston, South Carolina, and Saturday mornings were taken up with SMI's, the old Saturday Morning Inspection.  Friday night meant cleaning our rooms, having everything folded properly, in its right place, brass work polished, shoes shined and the old wooden floors soaked in bleach, to a nice clean white. Those barracks we lived in were quit old and I always wondered how those floors had withstood that weekly treatment.

I still have a soft spot in my heart for Saturdays, sometimes it was house cleaning day, laundry day, the start of a weekend with the wife and kids, now, many Saturdays later, I still try to make it a special day. Not easy today, cold and a lot of snow on the ground.

But, today, another Saturday, a special one, my daughter, Melissa Shannon Dooley Dunlap, has a birthday. Later on I will have to shovel a path to the car, get about four or five inches of snow off the car, and head to a birthday party.

I still love Saturday, always something special.
