I have been battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, an incurable blood cancer, for the past nine years. Last year, I was also diagnosed with uterine cancer.
I didn’t run to Canada for treatment. Medicare took care of my needs right here in New York City. To endure, I just need the freedom to choose my insurance, my doctors, and get the diagnostic scans and care I need. And one more thing: I need hope that a treatment will be developed that can control my diseases the way insulin controls diabetes.
Every cancer patient needs these things, especially hope. But the government’s plan to reform the health-care system in this country threatens all of this—particularly the development of new treatments.
When I was first diagnosed in 2000 I had chemotherapy. It put me in remission, but nearly killed me.
Three years later the lymphoma was back and I faced more chemo. This is so often the pattern of cancer: recurring disease and repeated chemo. In the end patients often die not from the disease, but from the treatments.
I took a different path, seeking a cancer vaccine. One had been developed at Stanford University 12 years earlier that had given 90% of patients very long remissions and cured some entirely. Unlike chemotherapy, there were no severe side effects.
But I couldn’t get the vaccine because the Food and Drug Administration required another trial that would take nine more years. Over-regulation has kept this treatment from patients for 21 years, as some 24,000 lymphoma patients died each year.
My husband and I searched the Internet and found another vaccine being tested at Freiburg University in Germany. That vaccine has helped me avoid chemotherapy for years. My oncologist says he’s never seen another patient do so well with the type of lymphoma I have.
I am still here because my care was managed by doctors—not a government agency. My doctors do what the bureaucracy can’t: They see me as a human being.
Patient-as-person will be a lost concept under the new health-care plan, where treatments will be based not upon individual patient needs, but upon what’s best for everyone. So cancer drugs for seniors might take second place to jungle gyms and farmers’ markets—so-called preventive care—which are covered under both the House and Senate versions of the health bill.
The stimulus package passed earlier this year allocated $1.1 billion for hundreds of “Comparative Effectiveness Research” studies. This project will compare all treatment options for a host of diseases in order to develop a database to guide doctors’ decisions. Research of this sort typically takes years. But the data will likely be hastily drawn conclusions that reflect the view of the government agencies that fund the studies: Cheap therapies are just as good as expensive ones.
In order to finance health-care reform, Democrats in Congress have proposed cutting $500 billion from Medicare over the next 10 years. Yet in his press conference last Wednesday, President Barack Obama denied that Medicare benefits would be cut. He has surrounded himself with advisers who believe otherwise.
Tom Daschle, Mr. Obama’s original pick to head Health and Human Services, argues in his book “Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis,” that we should accept “hopeless diagnoses” and “forgo experimental treatments.” Mr. Daschle blames the “use and overuse of new technologies and treatments” for runaway health-care costs. He suggests a Federal Health Board modeled after the British “NICE” board to make decisions on health-care rationing.
But the British system is infamous for denying state-of-the-art drugs to cancer patients. Thus cancer-survival rates in Britain are far below those in America, just as they are in Canada.
Canadian cancer patients told to wait months for treatment and diagnostic scans frequently go south and pay out-of-pocket for care in the United States. A number of Quebeckers even sued their government for violating their “right to life and security” under the Quebec Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Canada’s Supreme Court has acknowledged the pervasive rationing that occurs. In the 2005 case Chaoulli v. Quebec (Attorney General) , the majority opinion stated: “The evidence in this case shows that delays in the public health care system are widespread, and that, in some serious cases, patients die as a result of waiting lists for public health care.”
Despite such evidence, the Obama plan is likely to target various treatments—including radiology scans—in order to cut costs. I survived this long because my radiologist examines each of my scans with me in detail.
One of those scans also saved my life by picking up unsuspected uterine cancer. The congressional majority seems blissfully unaware that all cancer patients need those scans to monitor their diseases.
Also uneasy with the cost of medical progress is Dr. David Blumenthal, Mr. Obama’s new head of Health Information Technology. It is not reassuring that he stresses that two-thirds of the annual increases in health spending result from medical innovation, as he has written in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Cancer patients need nothing more than such innovation. Yes, developing more effective, less toxic treatments is expensive. The prices of new cancer therapies reflect the billion-dollar cost of developing each new drug. But such treatments can be life-saving, as they have been for me.
Despite its warts, our system works. Carelessly tinkering with it will have a world-wide penalty—the stifling of new drug development. What company would spend a billion dollars to develop a drug that will not be reimbursed by the new health plan? This would be a direct, devastating blow to the most vulnerable Americans.
In spite of the president’s assurances, there is every sign that this plan will be financed by deep cuts to Medicare, which, like the public option, will limit payments for specialists, radiology scans, and cutting-edge cancer drugs. These are prime targets because they are more expensive than other services. But are we really expected to forgo new medical technology and return to the cancer care of the 1970s?
When members of Congress are asked if they will opt for the public plan, they say no. That’s for the rest of us.
The number of Americans who have cancer exceeds 10 million. It’s time for cancer patients and their families to remind those on Capitol Hill that health-care reform is a matter of life and death for us.

Ingredients:
35 Reduced Fat NILLA Wafers, finely crushed (about 1-1/4 cups)
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) margarine, melted
1 pkg. (8 oz.) PHILADELPHIA Neufchatel Cheese, softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Sugar Free Whipped Topping, thawed, divided
3 bananas, sliced
2 pkg. (1 oz. each) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Fat Free Sugar Free Instant Pudding
3 cups cold fat-free milk
1/2 square BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, grated
Preparation:
COMBINE crumbs and margarine; press onto bottom of 13x9-inch dish. Refrigerate.
MIX Neufchatel and sugar in medium bowl with whisk until blended. Stir in 1-1/2 cups COOL WHIP; spread over crust. Top with bananas.

The pelosi 5.4% income surtax ....................
Even many Democrats are revolting against Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s 5.4% income surtax to finance ObamaCare, but another tax in her House bill isn’t getting enough attention. To wit, the up to 10-percentage point payroll tax increase on workers and businesses that don’t provide health insurance. This should put to rest the illusion that no one making less than $250,000 in income will pay higher taxes.
To understand why, consider how the Pelosi jobs tax works. Under the House bill, firms with employee payroll of above $250,000 without a company health plan would pay a tax starting at 2% of wages per employee. That rate would quickly rise to 8% on firms with total payroll of $400,000 or more. A tax credit would help very small businesses adjust to the new costs, but even a firm with a handful of workers is likely to be subject to this payroll levy. As we went to press, Blue Dogs were taking credit for pushing those payroll amounts up to $500,000 and $750,0000, but those are still small employers.
So who bears the burden of this tax? The economic research is close to unanimous that a payroll tax is a tax on labor and is thus shouldered mostly if not entirely by workers. Employers merely collect the tax and then pass along its costs in lower wages or benefits. This is the view of the Democratic-controlled Congressional Budget Office, which advised on July 13: “If employers who did not offer health insurance were required to pay a fee, employee’s wages and other forms of compensation would generally decline by the amount of that fee from what they otherwise would have been.”

ASPIRIN BY THE BEDSIDE ...... UPDATE
I thought I would update my BLOG with this additional information. I will try to get an difinitive answer ..... if there is one .... I do like the "chew" and "call 911"

Taking one or two aspirin immediately if you suspect a heart attack IS standard medical advice. Calling a friend or neighbor IS NOT. Call 911 and then follow the instructions.
A lot of people don't want to call 911, maybe because they're in denial about how serious it might be, they don't want the neighbors gawking, they don't want the bill, they think it's not serious enough and don't want to tie up an ambulance for "someone who might really need it" - the reasoning goes, "by the time the ambulance gets here and loads me up, I could already be ten minutes closer to the hospital in my car." But you won't have a defibrillator, you won't have trained paraprofessionals, you won't have access to oxygen, and you won't be able to call the emergency room and tell them to prep a cardiac/MI suite and get the on-call cardiologist into the department.
Don't let the aspirin dissolve - chew it. The idea is to get it into your system as quickly as possible. When it's not in pressed tablet form, it enters the bloodstream more quickly, but the time it would take to dissolve in the mouth would defeat the purpose. (If, like me, the idea of chewing aspirin makes you gag, you could crush it before swallowing.)
And do tell the dispatcher and the EMTs that you took aspirin, and how many. The SOP is to administer aspirin to anyone with a suspected MI, but aspirin is a blood thinner, and if you wind up needing to have surgery, too much of an anticoagulation effect can cause excessive bleeding.
The part about the aspirin could help save lives; the part about calling a friend or neighbor could endanger lives.

May 1, we warned you that President Obama's health care proposals could lead to bureaucrats deciding when to "pull the plug" on an individual's medical treatment. That awful day is drawing nearer.
In an April 28 New York Times interview, the president spoke of having government guide a "very difficult democratic conversation" about "those toward the end of their lives [who] are accounting for potentially 80 percent of the total health care bill out here." Those statements sounded a little creepy to us. Deciding who gets denied care at the end of life should not be dependent on government cost controls.
Presidential health care adviser Ezekiel Emanuel, brother of White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and chairman of the Department of Bioethics at the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health, has argued that independent government boards should decide policy on end-of-life care. He also has defended rationing care more strictly for older people because "allocation [of medical care] by age is not invidious discrimination."
It is in that light that House Republicans warn against draft Section 1233 of the House Democratic health care bill as an area of deep concern. It provides for seniors, every five years, to be provided "advance care planning consultation" for "end-of-life services." House Minority Leader John A. Boehner of Ohio and Republican Rep. Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan warn that the provision "may start us down a treacherous path toward government-encouraged euthanasia."
If that fear sounds far-fetched, consider that similar things already are happening in several states. As Jeff Emanuel (no relation to the Obama officials) explains on the facing page, a panel of the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals this spring ruled that Georgia can override a doctor's decision about how much care is warranted for a handicapped child because the state is "the final arbiter" of medical decisions.
The situation is even worse in Oregon, which has legalized "assisted suicide." As radio host and author Mark Levin has publicized in his best-seller "Liberty and Tyranny," the Oregon health plan last year refused to pay for a recognized drug to prolong the life of lung cancer patient Barbara Wagner even after her oncologist prescribed it. Yet the same bureaucrats told Ms. Wagner that the plan would indeed cover doctor-assisted suicide if she chose that option.
Saving her life was deemed too expensive, but paying her to die was just fine.
A year ago, on July 28, 2008, FoxNews.com reported that such cases aren't unique in Oregon but are becoming almost commonplace. For instance, until he raised a ruckus, 53-year-old prostate cancer patient Randy Stroup of Dexter, Ore., was denied new treatments but offered full payment if he would just agree to be killed.
As Jeff Emanuel noted in a post at the Red State blog, Oregon's plan expressly does not cover "medical equipment or supplies which will not benefit the patient for a reasonable length of time." Reasonableness is determined by green-eyeshade, budget-crunching bureaucrats rather than by doctors.
Mr. Obama's government health care proposal easily could devolve into a similar nightmare. That's reason enough for lawmakers to give this awful legislation a merciful death.

I Miss the Old Philco
Spent many happy hours in front of the old Philco radio at 319 South Brown Street, in Dayton, Ohio, back in the 30's and 40's.
Listened to Peter Grant do the news from WLW, Cincinnati, listened to Winchell, Kaltenborne and Heater do the news, the old Barn Dance from Cincinnati, and E. Howard Cadle, from the Cadle Tabernacle in Indianapolis, Indiana. The old Saturday Night Barn Dance, Lulabelle and Scotty, the Grand old Opry, lots of good stuff way back then.
The old Philco kept us abreast of the war during the 40's. I remember Edward R. Murrow broadcasting from London and other spots, hearing bombs dropping in the background. At night we listened to Bob Hope and Jack Benny, Red Skelton, and a bunch of other shows. After school, I listened to Jack Armstong and Captain Midnight, Terry and the Pirates.
I still think you get a better view of a basegall game listening to it over the old Philco. Waite Hoyt and others painted a more graphic image than ever came over a television set. I can still see Bobby Thompson hitting that home run in 1950, and I listened to that game on the radio.
Bill stern and his melodious tones could paint a vivid picture of what he was talking about on his sports shows. Football was great to listen to, vivid images. I think the mind did a better job than the eyes, on occasions.
The family gathered around the old Philco on Christmas Eve, listening to those special Christmas shows they did, some, the same show each year, but they were a part of the season.
I still remember the show, Grand Central Station, the whistle, the train pulling in to the station, and their special Christmas show. Benny and Hope and other, with the season shows, made the seasons more special.
I can still reflect and remember who, was in our living room, listening to shows at special times.
We had our home and office together, Dads medical office, in the same house, but next door. There was one door connecting the two. Many a night I remember him coming through that connecting door, tired after a long day, plopping down in his chair, and turning on the old Philco, catching up on the latest news, before climbing those long steps to their bedroom.
That old Philco holds a lot of good memories.

Health care will be denied based on age. 500 Billion will be cut from Seniors healthcare. The only way for that to happen is to drastically cut health care, the oldest and the sickest will be cut first. Paying for your own care will not be an option.

Some years ago radio evangelist Charles E. Fuller announced that he would speak the following Sunday on "Heaven". It was to be broadcast on radio.
During that week he received a letter from an old man who was very ill. Here is part of that letter:
"Next Sunday you are to talk about "Heaven". I am interested in that land because I have held a clear title to a bit of property there for over 55 years. I did not buy it. It was given to me without money and without price.
But the donor purchased it for me at a tremendous sacrifice. I am not holding it for speculation since the title is nontransferable. It is not a vacant lot. "For more than a half-century I have been sending material out of which the greatest architect and builder of the universe has been building a home for me, which will never need to be repaired because it will suit me perfectly, individually, and will never grow old.
Termites can never undermine its foundation for it rests upon the Rock of Ages. Fire cannot destroy it. Floods cannot wash it away. No locks or bolts will ever be placed upon its doors, for no vicious person can ever enter that land where my dwelling stands, now almost completed and ready for me to enter it and abide in peace eternally without fear of being ejected.

Obamas find a Summer Retreat on Martha’s Vineyard

July 24, 2009 — No doubt the first family is ready for a vacation and according to The Vineyard Gazette they have some luxurious digs to look forward to. It sounds like they will be calling the 28-acre Blue Heron Farm home during their stay on Martha’s Vinyard in August. The farm is large enough to give the president and his entourage enough space to relax and maintain security.
Word is the president is also paying his own way and will sign a lease for the spot that rents for $35 – 50,000 per week. But according to sources, the Obamas are splitting the lease three ways; the White House entourage and the Secret Service will be responsible for their chuck of the cost.
It isn’t easy finding a place safe enough for the first family to call home – even for a few weeks. It seems the Secret Service visited and rejected some 20 properties on the island before settling on Blue Heron. And by the way the standard summer rental contract included a request to bring the family dog, Bo.
And if you’re wondering where the Clintons vacationed on the Vineyard; they managed to stay at the homes of wealthy friends with great properties - and they lucked out spending six summers rent free.

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is standing by his assertion that police did not need to arrest a Harvard scholar who was trying to get into his own home.
Obama said in an interview with ABC that he has "extraordinary respect" for the challenges and hardships that law enforcement officers face every day in their line of work. But at the same time he said he didn't think it was necessary to arrest Henry Louis Gates Jr.
Obama said "cooler heads should have prevailed" in the incident. But he did not retract his initial statement that he thought police had "acted stupidly" and said such incidents "get elevated in ways that probably don't make much sense."
What does he have to do with it, why is he even making comments on it, was he there, he just loves to hear himself TALK.

Just think of all that is involved when he decides to take a trip.
The limos get flown out, a couple of helicopters, the two planes, probably a million plus when he decides to depart.

.... and there are Educators
According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom.
That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick, they would press their lips to
the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.
Every night the maintenance man would remove them, and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done.
She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns
from the little princesses).
To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.
He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it.
Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.
There are teachers . . . and then there are educators.

Obama: No time for delay on health care
What's the hurry, concerned that the American people will learn what a HUGH mistake it will be.
WHAT has the GOVERNMENT ever run, and gotten it right?
Government health care will become the most MONSTROUS FARCE ever conceived by our government. The bureaucratic red tape will be unrolling like never before.
Remember all the jokes ...... "I am from the government and I am here to help you."
If it happens, it would be the most monumental joke of all.
WHY the urgency ..... Hillary could not pull it off .... let's hope and pray that Obama can't pull the wool over their eyes ............

On another subject ...
I watch the Tour de France, I don't understand it, I don't know WHY anyone would want to subject themselves to such torture, unless they just enjoy the scenery like I do. They don't have the advantage of that helicopter though. The shots they take are marvelous. I can see why Hitler wanted to own all of that.
Their crowd control leaves something to be desired. Some riders actually have had to try to beat people off, and I don't understand why, someone wants to run along with the bikers for a few yards or so. The crowds are almost hysterical, and they only get a few seconds view of the riders.
It has to be one of the largest sporting events in the world, when you add it all up. I learned what the peloton was, they could just as easily said the "group." I have heard three different pronunciations of the word.
I am sure the educated know what is happening, I don't, but I love that scenery. I think in a previous life I was Bavarian. Those alps are beautiful, the architecture is extraordinary, as is the scenery.
I wonder, also, some of those roads are quite old, they don't seem to deteriorate like our highways do, wonder why that is. I don't think I have seen one orange barrel. Wonder if they build their roads to last. The Autobahn was build in the twenties, wonder how much maintanance they have had to do.
In Columbus, Ohio, I think they build their highways to last for five years, then resurrface.

Republicans and some fiscally conservative Democrats argue the plan, with an estimated cost of more than $1 trillion, could hurt small businesses, add to budget deficits and reduce the quality of medical care for many Americans.
Those concerns may be having an impact on the public, according to the poll, which showed 49 percent of respondents approving of Obama's stand on the issue compared to 57 percent in April.

The Obama Health Care Plan: Hazardous to Your Health

On June 25 a town hall meeting was held in Rio Rancho, New Mexico to discuss Obama's health care plan. The meeting opened with a televised study of the Canadian and UK's health care plans. Afterwards, a factual report of the Obama plan was presented. Listening to it, I felt like I was in 1938 Germany listening to someone explaining Nazi proposals to crush everyone under an iron boot.
The Obama plan is a full-scale collectivization of America, of our lives and of our relationship with our government. It is the undiluted destruction of our individual right to life and property, a denial of the right to choose what to buy, from whom to buy it, how much we choose to pay and at what time we choose to pay it.
It proposes to tell doctors and others working in the medical industry what to do, and what to charge, what treatments to offer, and what prescriptions are permitted.
It proposes to tell patients who they may have access to, what treatments they may have, how long they must wait for treatment and whether---as in the case of those over 70 years of age---they will be treated at all. On top of all that, it forces earners/producers to pay for what they do not want.
It spreads its fetid breath over every aspect of health care. The result is total control of every citizen's well being and ultimately of every citizen's life. It is not a health care plan. It is the destruction of individual rights and the transformation of our nation into a socialist state. This is the "change" Obama promised. He meant it then. He means it now.
Obama's universal health care plan proposes to force American earners/producers to pay the medical bills for every United States resident, whether a citizen or not. The same idea in principle was tried in New York City many years ago with welfare checks. Every moocher, looter, free-loader, malingerer and other form of parasite dwelling elsewhere, moved to NYC to take the checks that New Yorkers were forced to pay. Within John V. Lindsey's first term, the city was swamped with "migrants" who lived on welfare, cluttering the city's streets, esplanades and parks. With Obama's "medical care for every resident," the result will be the same and very likely considerably worse.
Additionally, the plan requires by law that everyone have health insurance whether they want it or not, making the government the single, sole payer. The single payer concept means there is no alternative the citizen may choose from, there's no way to redress a wrong. There's no way to seek a different opinion, there's no way to select a doctor you feel more comfortable with or a treatment you prefer. Doctors and patients alike will be under the command of government bureaucrats.
Most important the single payer concept effectively eradicates competition and makes health care into a monopoly. In private enterprise, monopoly doesn't exist for very long because competition eventually finds a way to get a foot into the market---by lowering prices, improving products, offering different products. But a government monopoly is enforced by the gun. A government monopoly guarantees ruinous practices, lower quality goods, decreasing competence and efficacy, higher prices and, therefore, higher taxes. The best example of this is the U. S. Postal System.
The self-employed doctor will be effectively eliminated. Those working at health care facilities, clinics, hospitals and other voluntary associations will be government employees. Without any competition to make money in medicine, loaded down with government paperwork and bureaucratic "watch dogs," doctors will not be able to see as many patients as they might like. They will not be able to improve their skills and discover new treatments or develop better, more effective skills. Without competition to make good money, interest in the field will decline and the quality of care will deteriorate while political pull-peddlers will replace skilled medical personnel.
Do not make the mistake of attributing to this health care plan and its sponsors the currently fashionable bromide of "good intentions with unforeseen consequences." There are no good intentions in this bill. The government knows exactly what it's doing. Here's one telling piece of evidence: All members of Congress and all of their staff will be exempt from the plan.
Like the stimulus bill, Congressional representatives have not read the health care bill. They will vote on it without knowing what they are voting on. And like the stimulus package, it is expected to pass. In 2 weeks.
Please call your representatives in Congress and insist they vote against all the government health care plans pending.

That Bill Clinton could get the emergency heart care his survival required within 3 days underscores a life-and-death difference between medicine under capitalism and under socialism.
Under the system of socialized medicine in Canada and Europe, people die because waiting lists to see doctors are too long to permit them to receive cardiac care in time to save their lives. In Canada, for example, a patient typically must wait 24 days for an appointment with a cardiologist--and 15 additional days for the type of emergency bypass surgery that saved Bill Clinton's life. Similarly, a Swedish government survey showed that Swedes can be forced to wait as long as 11 months for a diagnostic heart X-ray and up to 8 months for essential heart surgery. The upshot, according to one research cardiologist, is that at least 1,000 Swedes die each year for lack of heart treatment.
The moral belief in the right to health care beyond what an individual can afford--health care at other people's expense--leads inevitably to demand for unnecessary or superficial care that clogs doctors' offices, overfills hospitals and tasks the health care system beyond its capacities. The predictable result is the endless waiting lists of socialized medicine.
The choice facing Americans is stark: the rights-respecting free market of capitalism, where goods and services are produced in abundance, including health care--or the chronic disasters of socialism, where thousands die because of continuous shortages.

TORONTO -- A letter from the Moncton Hospital to a New Brunswick heart patient in need of an electrocardiogram said the appointment would be in three months. It added: "If the person named on this computer-generated letter is deceased, please accept our sincere apologies."
The patient wasn't dead, according to the doctor who showed the letter to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. But there are many Canadians who claim the long wait for the test and the frigid formality of the letter are indicative of a health system badly in need of emergency care.
Americans who flock to Canada for cheap flu shots often come away impressed at the free and first-class medical care available to Canadians, rich or poor. But tell that to hospital administrators constantly having to cut staff for lack of funds, or to the mother whose teenager was advised she would have to wait up to three years for surgery to repair a torn knee ligament.
"It's like somebody's telling you that you can buy this car, and you've paid for the car, but you can't have it right now," said Jane Pelton. Rather than leave daughter Emily in pain and a knee brace, the Ottawa family opted to pay $3,300 for arthroscopic surgery at a private clinic in Vancouver, with no help from the government.
"Every day we're paying for health care, yet when we go to access it, it's just not there," said Pelton.
The average Canadian family pays about 48 percent of its income in taxes each year, partly to fund the health care system. Rates vary from province to province, but Ontario, the most populous, spends roughly 40 percent of every tax dollar on health care, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
The system is going broke, says the federation, which campaigns for tax reform and private enterprise in health care.
It calculates that at present rates, Ontario will be spending 85 percent of its budget on health care by 2035. "We can't afford a state monopoly on health care anymore," says Tasha Kheiriddin, Ontario director of the federation. "We have to examine private alternatives as well."

Socialized Medicine .. heading your way....
My Father, who was an MD, predicted Socialized Medicine would eventually happen, 60 years ago. And, he predicted a tremendous DECREASE in the QUALITY of medicine. Now, potentially good doctors will elect for another field.
Socialism is creeping in to our lives more every day, and if we stay on the tack we are presently on, we will be sailing into a socialistic state, all government control.
We are letting it happen, and some morning we will wake up saying, "What happened?" But then it will be too late.
This week, House Democrats unveiled their $1.5 trillion, 1,018 page addition to the federal bureaucracy - socialized health care.
Make no mistake about it, the "free" health care will cost you more in taxes - some as high as 57%. And if that isn't enough, at a time of near 10% unemployment this will force many small business to lay people off.
Finally, like your doctor? Better hope she or he is part of the "government plan".
Elections have consequences and we're now seeing the results of an uninhibited liberal majority in Washington.
No American should forfeit nearly 60% of their yearly earnings to taxes. Yet, that is exactly what would happen to many if this health care plan with its higher tax rate is passed.
Maybe we are too tired to fight, the veil of government is too translucent, and we are only allowed to see what they want us to see.

What is a Peloton???????
The peloton (from French, literally meaning little ball or platoon and also related to the English word pellet), field, bunch or pack is the large main group in a road bicycle race.
Riders in a group save energy by riding close (drafting or slipstreaming) near (particularly behind) other riders.
The reduction in drag is dramatic; in the middle of a well-developed group it can be as much as 40%.[1]
More loosely, "the peloton" can also refer to professional cyclists in general: "LeMond joined the European peloton at a time when few Americans could."
Well, I was wondering, so I got the answer ............
How do Tour de France riders go to the toilet?
Generally, they pull over to the side of the road, stop, and shed liquid ballast in the usual way.
Sometime in the first couple of hours of the race, a senior rider (a team leader) will organize a comfort break and the whole peloton will slow down enough that riders can stop for a break and easily catch up afterwards.
A rider should not attack while a large-scale comfort break is in progress, and you certainly don't attack the yellow jersey when he's taking a break. If the stage is short, fast or very hot it may simply not be necessary, but on a cold morning at the beginning of a long day's trek will almost certainly happen.
If a rider needs to go outside of an organized stop, that's another situation where team-work comes into play.
Along with a couple of team-mates, the rider will drop back in the peloton, and move to the side of the road. While his team-mates push him along at the back of the bunch, he'll take a mobile comfort break.
It's considered extremely rude if photographers and TV shoot this whole process which is why we never see it on TV or in pictures.
It seems also, that on a not day, perspiration takes care of the whole process.

The ALL STAR Game
I don't care what your politics are, it was a great opening ceremony. A well manicured field full of millionaires, but, to me, it was more about the opening ceremony.
Introduction of the teams then intro of the managers, then the starting players.
Then a gigantic flag, anchored by armed forces, unfurled in the outfield.
Then a film about unheard of people, who have decided to "do something," or "give something back," and briefly their stories. One lady knits and donates hats to people who are going through cancer therapy. Others did a variety of volunteer work.
And then, they came out on the playing field, in a group, and the players, converged on them to thank and congratulate them. It was neat. These were people who devote time, money and energy to doing things for others, and they do it because they want to, and they were being recognized for what they did. It was really neat.
Then more film, the President, and all his living predecessors, congratulating the players, and then they congratulated the group of caring people.
I admit, I had a few tears. Someone decided to thank a group of people who generally do what they do out of dedication and caring, and they were being recognized.
Then, Stan Musial, who I have seen play at old Crosley Field in Cincinnati, 80 some years old, came on to the field in a golf cart, and he was carrying a baseball.
ST. LOUIS — If the buildup to the 80th All-Star Game belonged to St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, Tuesday night's celebration belonged to America and Cardinals legend Stan Musial.
A sea of red and a deafening roar in appreciation greeted Musial, 88, who arrived via the right-field gate in a maroon golf cart.
But then, President Obama emerged from the dugout, went to the golf cart, and Mr. Musial gave the baseball to the President, resplendent in jeans and a Chicago White Sox jacket, and threw out the first pitch, to Albert Pujols.
It was a great opening ceremony, the National Anthem left a little to be desired, couldn't decide whether she was wearing shorts or a mini skirt. People just don't dress appropriately anymore, to suit my tastes. At least is wasn't Roseanne Barr.
Whoever put the show together is to be congratulated.

I got to wondering ..............
I got to wondering, the other day, how different my life would be, IF, I had waited 24 hours, and perhaps sought some advice, prior to making any MAJOR decisions.
I've made few RIGHT decisions, so I would have to go back 50 years, or more, to start contemplating that. In order for it to work, you would have to start at the beginning because everything after that would me altered.
My life would be entirely different now, but many lives would be affected, so I have to reason, that even ALL the mistakes, have led me to this place in life. Good or bad, I am old, have a resemblance of good health, a loving wife who has survived breast cancer, four children, all in good health and doing reasonably well. So I might have made better decisions, but the ones I have made, got me down the road to where I am today.
When I start looking back, one right after the other, bad decisions, or at least look bad now. My ADD has affected a lot of decisions, or prompted them.
I have had a tendency to make snap decisions, rather than reason things out, or seek advice ... but looking back still brings me to today, and today could be better, much better, if I had made more reasonable decisions, but in comparison to some, today ain't all bad.
Hindsight could have led to some better decision making, but we don't have the benefit of that, until its too late. My wrong decisions far outweigh my smart ones.
Wait 24 hours, seek advice or counsel, and then make your major decisions. Good advice from someone who never did.

The older I get ..............
The older I get, the harder it is ...... to MERGE.
I am doing better with driving, since my triple bi-pass of a few years ago, but I find that when I have to MERGE on to the freeway, it is getting more difficult.
MERGING takes very quick reflexes and decisions, and in my advanced age, this is getting tougher all the time.
I spend more time at 4-way stops, just to make sure that everyone understands what the other is going to do. If someone looks like they are in a hurry, I let them go first.
I think some people look in my car, see my white hair, know of my reluctance, and swoosh on.
I generally STOP before I MERGE, just to make sure there are no cars coming, and it is not as easy to turn my head ..... completely to the left as it used to be. I can only do about eighty degrees without turning my head, and I just don't trust rear view mirrors.
I have seen some "old timers" who do not worry about MERGING, they just go ahead with no worry or concern about what might be coming in their direction. They don't even seem concerned about all the tires screeching behind them, and they avoid all the dirty looks as cars pass them ..... eventually.
I take alternate routes so I don't have to MERGE. I prefer stop lights and STOP signs to merging. MERGING is for the young, not the old.
I may have a bumper sticker printed .....

The Tour de France ...... I think that's it
I never had a TV channel before, that I know of, where I could watch the TDF live, but it is an interesting sporting event to watch.
A long day of riding, and it comes down to an exciting finish.
The scenery is outstanding as they go through those little towns and the mountains. The route is lined with people, cars, campers. With so many people on those narrow roads and streets it amazes me that some bikers and spectators don't collide.
I don't really understand the race, different ones finish first, but the aren't necessarily winning the race, but, nevertheless, it is fun to watch.
I now would like to hit the lottery and take that same route, in a nice camper, and see all those sites.
The bikers and the cars and motorcycles seem to be in such close proximity to each other, maybe the camera causes that. One biker will be next to a car, loaded with bikes, riding at high speeds, taking water bottles, and loading them in a back vest. Seems like one little slip, and disaster.
I will be back watching in on Tuesday AM, early, I guess they give them a day off today.
I would need a lot more than that if I was in it ..........

BAR BE QUE SAUCE .... or Doo Be Que
I have had so many requests for DOO BE QUE sauce that I give up .... here is the recipe ..... when you use it though, call it DOOBEQUE sauce, that's all I ask.
This is the original recipe we used .... you break it down ...
ONE Number 10 can of HEINZ (IT WORKS THE BEST) Ketchup
There are 3 quarts in a #10 can .... 32 oz. to a quart
ONE bottle of LIQUID SMOKE
Usually 3.5 oz. There are a few brands on the shelves. I liked WRIGHT'S
ONE two pound pack of brown sugar ... either light or dark
You can break the portions down .... but try to keep in these proportions, they work best. You can just take HEINZ KETCHUP, add brown sugar, smoke to taste, and be done with it. But, the basic proportions work the best.
That is all there is to it. NO cooking, just put all these together and the sauce is ready to go. Put in frig, the longer it sits, the better it is.
There is none better, and nothing in here that people can't like.
When you use it, don't tell anyone what you used in it, or how long it took to make it, just sit back and listen to the compliments.
There are a number of restaurants, caterers, bars, using this now, and they never told .... simplicity .... but if you add ALL the ingredients in ketchup, etc., together, there are a lot of ingredients. YOU just need three things.

My Experience with a Heart Attack .....AGAIN
I just didn't feel well, hadn't for a couple of days .... NO particular symptoms.
My wife was not home, she was working, so they called my son-in-law,, he came over, I casually got dressed, and off we went to the hospital.
Emergency room ..... some natural concern, EKG and a few other things, went back to my cubicle ..... for 6 hours ..... a few visits my Doctors and nurses, one seemingly concerned Doctor, a woman, seemed puzzled by my symptoms, or lack of them.
Finally ordered an XRay, wheeled down, moved to the left, then to the right, back on the bed, and a nurse started wheeling me back to my emergency cubicle.
The Doctor was waiting for me, I think I noticed a strange expression on her face, it is all rather blurred ..... "Oh, you're having a heart attack!"
Blood work had finally come back with that, whatever, showing.
Then it was a blurr .... vaguely remember something at our local hospital ...

I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO SHOCKED IN MY LIFE .... something they would have attached something to ..... if necessary, but it wasn't.
I have never experienced anything like that in my life ..... and ..... if I had known what he was going to do ..... I probably would have killed him first. He knew how to do it .......... JUST DO IT .... before anyone can think about it.
It didn't hurt, just like someone pulling a garden hose out of your chest ....

I was up and around quite soon, but in all honesty, it has taken me almost three years to get over ALL of it, and still not sure if I have. Many mental issues, emotional issues, things they don't tell you about.
AND, AND, I had preached about ASPIRIN ..... and did not take any .... till the end of it all, coming back from the XRAY department, first thing the Doctor did, have me CHEW TWO ASPIRIN ...................
My wife was not home, she was working, so they called my son-in-law,, he came over, I casually got dressed, and off we went to the hospital.
Emergency room ..... some natural concern, EKG and a few other things, went back to my cubicle ..... for 6 hours ..... a few visits my Doctors and nurses, one seemingly concerned Doctor, a woman, seemed puzzled by my symptoms, or lack of them.
Finally ordered an XRay, wheeled down, moved to the left, then to the right, back on the bed, and a nurse started wheeling me back to my emergency cubicle.
The Doctor was waiting for me, I think I noticed a strange expression on her face, it is all rather blurred ..... "Oh, you're having a heart attack!"
Blood work had finally come back with that, whatever, showing.
Then it was a blurr .... vaguely remember something at our local hospital ...

I thought I would update my BLOG with this additional information. I will try to get an difinitive answer ..... if there is one .... I do like the "chew" and "call 911"

Taking one or two aspirin immediately if you suspect a heart attack IS standard medical advice. Calling a friend or neighbor IS NOT. Call 911 and then follow the instructions.
A lot of people don't want to call 911, maybe because they're in denial about how serious it might be, they don't want the neighbors gawking, they don't want the bill, they think it's not serious enough and don't want to tie up an ambulance for "someone who might really need it" - the reasoning goes, "by the time the ambulance gets here and loads me up, I could already be ten minutes closer to the hospital in my car." But you won't have a defibrillator, you won't have trained paraprofessionals, you won't have access to oxygen, and you won't be able to call the emergency room and tell them to prep a cardiac/MI suite and get the on-call cardiologist into the department.
Don't let the aspirin dissolve - chew it. The idea is to get it into your system as quickly as possible. When it's not in pressed tablet form, it enters the bloodstream more quickly, but the time it would take to dissolve in the mouth would defeat the purpose. (If, like me, the idea of chewing aspirin makes you gag, you could crush it before swallowing.)
And do tell the dispatcher and the EMTs that you took aspirin, and how many. The SOP is to administer aspirin to anyone with a suspected MI, but aspirin is a blood thinner, and if you wind up needing to have surgery, too much of an anticoagulation effect can cause excessive bleeding.
The part about the aspirin could help save lives; the part about calling a friend or neighbor could endanger lives.

The Would in Highland, New York
On a recent trip back East, we discovered some great "out of the way" spots. One such was a place with the strange name of "The Would." We laughed when we first heard of it ........... Who Would ............ We Would ......... that sort of thing, but we drove to this lovely spot, had a delicious dinner, and wanted to learn more about the place.
Originally part of the summer resort, Hotel Di Prima, opened its doors in 1926. The Would Restaurant has a long history of warm hospitality. The Hotel Di Prima catered to Italian families from the New York City area. In the 1940s and 1950s, thousands of vacationing families came to relax and savor the rich summer flavors of “the country.”
In 1994, Claire Winslow and Debra Dooley purchased the establishment and became partners in this famous Hudson Valley retreat. With renovations underway they changed the name of the resort to the Inn At Applewood, and the restaurant to The Would.
Many guests say that "the old resort atmosphere relaxes you and takes you back to slower days." On summer evenings guests enjoy dining on the porch, while watching the boccie players. In the winter they dine by a crackling fire with white linen table cloths, candlelight and fresh flowers.
What more can I say. We roamed around the grounds after dinner for quite a while, it is, in a beautiful setting, and the owners have kept much of the nostalgia which I am sure has been there since back in the 20's.
It really was a walk down "memory lane."
If you are in the area, or near, I suggest you try it out. You will find the ambiance relaxing, and you will almost be transported to an earlier, slower time, when graciousness was king. The food is excellent, they have an award winning wine cellar, all of the appointments are elegant, spotlessly clean, yet a truely warm and friendly atmosphere.

News of the Week ....
Michael Jackson has a type of funeral.
I don't understand how such a close knit family, with such close friends, didn't notice the intravenous bag hanging by his bed, or all the needle marks. So much for the close family and friends we have heard so much about. They seem to be closer now, concerned about the estate, some JUICY information about his children, and who their father really is, and maybe, just maybe, someone will have to answer for his death.
Billy Mays, Jr., that was a real tragedy. He was just starting to live the good life, was helping people realize their dreams, loved his family, he was the Pitchman's Pitchman, he was excellent at what he did.
Obama's kids seem to enjoy flying on AIR FORCE ONE, seems like they just fly everywhere since the election. I wonder how many days he has actually spent in the Oval Office. I hear he has a writer following him, and someday, a book will be published, similar to the Bible. Well, actually it will be called The Bible, Barack Version. Hey, it's easy to save the world when you have a jet to fly all over, unlimited usage.
OH, yes, the North Koreans fired missiles, and they don't like us.
There was an interview on TV, not sure who she was, apparently a North Korean. People in North Korea were not aware of the death of Michael Jackson ... actually, people in North Korea were not aware of Michael Jackson, or much of anything. All those millions of people just do what they are told.
Some things happened in Washington also, that were overlooked because of the Jackson coverage. I was surprised that Obama did not show up at the Jackson Memorial. If only he could have been there great exposure. Where was Oprah? Surprised she wasn't there.

I guess I was wrong ..............
It must have been me, I was too old, I didn't know that Michael Jackson was the star of the magnitude that he actually was.
I watched the memorial service today, I cried some, I was never a big fan, I admired his moon walk, some of his songs were OK, but, I didn't realize the magnitude of his charisma. He touched many lives.
I didn't really know him, I just saw the outer image of him.
I think Brook Shields opened my eyes .... he was a person, who genuinely had a purpose on this earth. I can think of no one, who could have pulled together, the world, today, as his passing did.
I only hope that we don't forget. I remember Princess Di, her death, a feeling that she had somehow brought the world trogether, didn't last long.
Any appearance on this earth, by anyone, who, even for an instant, can pull the world together, and hold the collective hands of the world together, is deserving of something.
Michael Jackson did that.

It is sad, but American Independence -once the light of the World- has now become the subject of Presidential apologies to Nations with very evil thoughts toward Independence.
Teddy Roosevelt's "big Stick" has become a broken twig as the world laughs and taunts us and threatens our sovereignty while our President is having his prompters fixed for more good words without foundation, simply golden tones wafting on the breeze of Socialism. They sure sound pretty, but the results have been the falling of prestige in the World, extreme unemployment, the sharp rise in the cost of living and a Federal budget that cannot be comprehended by any but a very small segment of society - Passed by a group who did not see any reason to read what they were passing.
I have noted before that the first to feel the folly of electing a Socialist to the Presidency would, of course, be the lower segment of society. The class war is lost before Obama can declare it. If you charge the "rich" more in taxes, they simply raise the cost of their product so the rest pay it for them.
'For every federal dollar that is jerked from the State, county or town, there is a raise in the local tax to cover it - by the worker . Note the mysterious rise in the cost of gas. Most is taxes -hidden taxes, but taxes just the same.
Our Independence is certainly being taken away, or it is being changed to Independence granted by the White House, but it is not lost due to ANY war, Not WWI,WWII, Korea, Viet Nam or the War on terror and the middle East, It is being taken by the very people elected to protect it.

Hats off to Andy Roddick. He played the best match of his career, and lost.
I quit watching it a few times, would flip over to other channels, but always went back, and glad I did. Got to see the final shot ......
Don't have to watch much tennis anymore ..... there will never be one like that.

A M E R I C A - A M E R I C A
Over the past few days, many 4th accolades have been directed, and deservedly so, at our armed forces.
The 4th of July celebrates our Declaration of Independence, the forming of AMERICA. In 1776, those men got together, in secret, and decided to declare their INDEPENDENCE from England. They wanted to be FREE and rule their own country.
I think we forget, at times, the actual reason for the day. It is not to thank the armed forces, that is done on another day, and should be done every day, but on the 4th we should thank those "signerS" for having the forethought to form this country. I don't think we say AMERICA enough. We have lost what AMERICA really is.
The 4th of July is a celebration of our INDEPENDENCE, nothing more. We should sing songs that attest to that, and songs with AMERICA in them.
I think we have lost sight of AMERICA and what they intended.
Last night, the 4th, a few TV stations had patriotic themes, but always geared at thanking our service men and women, but many more stations were about the life and death of Michael Jackson.
Something out of balance there.
I am more concerned about AMERICA, keeping alive what was started in 1776. Many kids today have little awareness of the Declaration of Independence, but they can recite all the words to songs, and know details of the lives of celebs of the day.
I think we should all think more about AMERICA, every day, and keep reminding those in government about AMERICA, before we no longer exist, as our forefathers intended.
And, we should do it before it is too late.
Sunday Morning Reflections
Fireworks from New York last night were awesome, Macy's' Parade at Thanksgiving and fireworks on the 4th. Retailing must be up if they can afford a display like that. Maybe the got some stimulus money.
I always admired McNair, he seemed to be a "professional" athlete. Just did his job as best he could, with no fanfare. Murder, suicide, wife and kids elsewhere. Not hard to figure. I think they said he had multiple wounds, she had one.
Michael Jackson .... as many, or more, people want to see his funeral, as wanted to see his shows. At least he has money, now. He is selling more records now, than when he was alive. I'm sure the family will see to that, all coming in, and with him gone, not as much going out. I have a hunch they will find ways to spend it.
Elvis is still making money. Seems like something is wrong when your memory can make more money than you can, with no expenses. A Babe Ruth autographed ball can be worth more that he made, salary, a year.
You had to be a very elite "star" of some kind to have that reaction. Most people just die, and that's the end. Only a few "live on."
Amazing, in a way, our society, pays more, in some cases, for something old, than for something new. Just look at the Antiques Roadshow. I sit there enthrall led at some of the values put on things. The antique car auction from Phoenix, and now Florida .... an old car ... worth a million or more. What is it that adds that wealth to an object.
A car, is basically used for transportation. I remember years ago, Charles Kettering, who invented the "electric starter" for cars, and had many patents and a lot of money. Each year, General Motors would send him down a new Cadillac .... he would go out and buy a little Chevy, and have his chauffeur drive him around in that.
Perception .... why is an old table worth thousands of dollars .... a top, four legs, used to eat on, or play cards on, it is just a table. When and where, did RARE make something more valuable? And why.
