Charles Pelot Summerall

Charles Pelot Summerall (March 4, 1867 – May 14, 1955) was a U.S. general. He fought in World War I, and was Army Chief of Staff between 1926 and 1930. He was also the President of The Citadel between 1931 and 1953.

He was President of The Citadel, when I attended there in 1950. He was a very imposing figure, in his 80's, but still active. I remember seeing him drive around campus in his car, and thinking that he was too old to drive .... now I am there.

Oddly, my Dad stood guard near his tent in WWI, as he did one, Lieutenant McArthur.

I have often seen the General strolling around campus, really not knowing of his importance as a military figure, just, the head of our university. He was a very imposing figure.
