The POWER of TV

TV and TV executives have to be the most powerful "source" on earth. The took a football game, The Super Bowl, and turned it in to one of  the most watched events, ever. Yet, it is still just a football game, but now, it is a television show built around the game.

A basketball tournament is now "March Madness."

I think that one of their greatest achievements though, is coming up soon, the NFL Football Draft. It is now a world class event, built around, nothing. How was it possible to create excitement about such a monotonous, boring, event. The room will be full, when a name is announced, the crowd goes wild, and another millionaire is born, and the great thing, there is a draft every year, so it never stops.

And what is someone getting, a college football player, with promise, and who will probably play in the NFL, around three years. So, there is a never ending supply.

I think, if TV chose, they could make an event out of anything. Why not do a spectacular about Income Tax Deadline Day. Endless possibilities there, and it could be made suspenseful and millions of stories to choose from.

Why has the NFL become so popular? Did "they" do it, or is something else involved. I guess it is the "mayhem" involved in football, the "hitting," the ferocity of the nature of the game, "throw the Christians to the Lions," mentality.

NASCAR, they have elevated it in popularity, MILLIONS of followers each race, each boring race. The drivers are celebrities, millionaires, but celebrities any way you look at it. Let's face it, "celebrity status" is what gets it done. Hero worship. I guess 99 percent of us live hum drum lives, so that 99 percent needs someone or something to look up to. It used to be "movie stars" .... now, the sports field has taken over.

Would it not be nice if we could transplant some of that "hero worship" in other directions?
