Been a BIG day for TV ....

Yes, the greatness of our country can be judged by our common interests, and, today shows what we are made of. All day today, I think, has been devoted to analyzing, critiquing and checking on, high school seniors, and where they are going to college, a great day, Washington's Birthday, Martin Luther King Day, and now, Signing Day, the day the world becomes aware of where athletes are going to college, well, to be more accurate, where they are going to play football, for a few years.

Hundreds of people are analyzing their decisions, evaluating their possibilities, plotting their futures. How can so much time, money, effort and energy be expended on "potential" .... football potential. Alabama apparently has the best "class." College football is becoming one of the largest industries in the country. The arenas, the programs themselves, the equipment, the scholarships, television, announcers, analysts, a gigantic industry. In some ways it is devoted to grooming players to become professionals, which is another gigantic industry, all about, football.

When was the last time you heard of anything "academic" at a university. I guess colleges today have a two fold purpose, educating future leaders and businessmen, and grooming players for the pros. Football is a revenue generating giant, in some cases the revenue from football, and the exposure, makes the difference.

Students, years ago, attended class, and perhaps on a Saturday afternoon, they got together and played a game of one kind or another, they were "club" games. Look what they have become. The goal of many young boys today, get through high school, get a football scholarship, play college ball, and then, a shot at the "pros," maybe play in the Super Bowl ... maybe even then, sue the NFL for allowing you to gake blows to the head, and make up for the millions you blew while playing, as a pro. Lofty ideals ..........
