"While I believe the Patriot Act appropriately balanced national security concerns and civil rights, I have always worried about potential abuses," Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, a Wisconsin Republican, said in a statement.
"Seizing phone records of millions of innocent people is excessive and un-American."
And in a scathing letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Sensenbrenner added: "These reports are deeply concerning and raise questions about whether our constitutional rights are secure. …
"How could the phone records of so many innocent Americans be relevant to an authorized investigation as required by the Act?"

The retired, six-time Pro Bowl center opted not to visit the White House this week with his Baltimore Ravens teammates because he disagrees with President Obama’s stance on abortion.
The Ravens visited the White House on Wednesday, in keeping with the tradition of Super Bowl champions.
Birk, a Harvard graduate and winner of the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2012, is a devout Catholic and father of six.
He was particularly angered by what Obama said at the end of a speech at a Planned Parenthood conference in April: “Thank you, Planned Parenthood. God bless you. God bless America. Thank you.”
In an interview with KFAN-FM, Birk explained his decision to take a pass on the White House invitation.
“I wasn't there,” Birk said. “I would say that I have great respect for the office of the presidency, but about five or six weeks ago, our president made a comment in a speech and he said, 'God bless Planned Parenthood.’
“Planned Parenthood performs about 330,000 abortions a year. I am Catholic, I am active in the pro-life movement and I just felt like I couldn't deal with that. I couldn't endorse that in any way. I’m very confused by [Obama’s] statement. For God to bless a place where they're ending 330,000 lives a year? I chose not to attend.”
Birk wasn't the lone Super Bowl winner to skip the visit.

A 3 year-old deaf boy in Lincoln, Nebraska is being bullied by public school officials to change his name because the hand sign for Hunter Spanjer looks like a weapon.
The Grand Island school district has a policy that forbids kids bringing to school "any instrument ... that looks like a weapon."
They can't change the sign, because it's the official hand sign for his name, registered through S.E.E., Sign Exact English.
I am not sure if this is the correct sign, I Googled and this came up ......... jbd

My afternoon TV schedule .....
I do often wonder why the good guys always seem to have the fastest horses and can catch up with the bad guys. I would think that some horse thieven, sidewimden, no good bad guy would go to the stable guy, with all that bank loot he has, and demand, "I want the fastest horse you got, pardner." Or, he could somehow get one faster than the good guys. But, they don't
If you look at this pitchure, podner, there ain't no saddle bags, ain't no suitcase or a trailer of any kind. Yet, when he and Tonto camp out at dusk, there is always a nice spread, skillets, plates, cups, and food. Does poor old Tonto have to lug it all, I don't think he would call him Kemosabe if he had to do that.
A number of shows, the Lone Ranger appears in an elaborate disguise, the other day he was a Mexican thief, and he has been a number of people, where is all that stored. Costumes, makeup, beards, clothes, I just have to wonder where they store it all, roaming the West as they do.
How often does he have to return to his Silver Mine to get his bullets? He has to run out sometime, and no one seems to dig them out and keep them as a souvenir. "Could you autograph this for me, masked man?"

Esther Williams is dead at 91
I think I have seen all of her movies, spent hours in theaters watching her, a young boys idol .... I think Thrill of a Romance was the first one I saw in '45, not sure how many times I watched it, but many.
Take Me Out to the Ball Game with Sinatra and Gene Kelly was a good flick. Easy to Love with Vaan Johnson and Tony Martin was another favorite. If Esther Williams was in it, I liked it.
The water, Esther Williams once quipped, was her favorite costar.
With her beauty, sunny personality and background as a champion swimmer, Williams shot to stardom in the 1940s in the "aqua musical," an odd sub-genre of films that became an enormous hit with the moviegoing mainstream, fanned popular interest in synchronized swimming and turned Williams into Hollywood's Million Dollar Mermaid.
The MGM bathing beauty, whose underwater extravaganzas made her one of the most popular actresses of the era, an idol in competitive swimming and a fashion force, died in her sleep early Thursday in Beverly Hills, said her publicist, Harlan Boll. She was 91.
President Obama’s Dragnet
Within hours of the disclosure that the federal authorities routinely collect data on phone calls Americans make, regardless of whether they have any bearing on a counterterrorism investigation, the Obama administration issued the same platitude it has offered every time President Obama has been caught overreaching in the use of his powers: Terrorists are a real menace and you should just trust us to deal with them because we have internal mechanisms (that we are not going to tell you about) to make sure we do not violate your rights.
Those reassurances have never been persuasive — whether on secret warrants to scoop up a news agency’s phone records or secret orders to kill an American suspected of terrorism — especially coming from a president who once promised transparency and accountability.
The administration has now lost all credibility on this issue. Mr. Obama is proving the truism that the executive will use any power it is given and very likely abuse it. That is one reason we have long argued that the Patriot Act, enacted in the heat of fear after the 9/11 attacks by members of Congress who mostly had not even read it, was reckless in its assignment of unnecessary and overbroad surveillance powers.
Based on an article in The Guardian published Wednesday night, we now know the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Security Agency used the Patriot Act to obtain a secret warrant to compel Verizon’s business services division to turn over data on every single call that went through its system. We know that this particular order was a routine extension of surveillance that has been going on for years, and it seems very likely that it extends beyond Verizon’s business division. There is every reason to believe the federal government has been collecting every bit of information about every American’s phone calls except the words actually exchanged in those calls.
Articles in The Washington Post and The Guardian described a process by which the N.S.A. is also able to capture Internet communications directly from the servers of nine leading American companies. The articles raised questions about whether the N.S.A. separated foreign communications from domestic ones.
A senior administration official quoted in The Times about the Verizon order offered the lame observation that the information does not include the name of any caller, as though there would be the slightest difficulty in matching numbers to names. He said the information “has been a critical tool in protecting the nation from terrorist threats,” because it allows the government “to discover whether known or suspected terrorists have been in contact with other persons who may be engaged in terrorist activities, particularly people located inside the United States.”
This was in the New York Times and I think it contains some very serious text that should be evaluated and considered. Too much is flying past us, unobserved, and I think, intentionally.
I spend a great deal of time each day, evaluating and reading. I am a "meat and potatoes" type person, and anymore all I am seeing is "fluff" ....... no substance, propaganda. I research the 20's, 30's and 40's and see so many similarities, it concerns me that someday we may wake up and find that it has all been taken away from us, and we are not even aware of it ............. jbd

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House. One is from Chicago, another is from Tennessee, and the third is from Montana.
All three go with a White House official to examine the fence.
The Montana contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900. That's $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."
The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $700. That's $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me."
The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$2,700."
The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys. How did you come up with such a high figure?"
The Chicago contractor whispers back, "$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence."
"Done!" replies the government official.
And that, is how the Government does business.

Spy Agency's Collection Of Phone Records Reopens Controversy

Until now, it was thought that such orders had almost always been tied to the collection of phone records related to a specific person or target. But Dina says the order uncovered Wednesday (first by The Guardian) has given the NSA "blanket authority to pick up telephone and data business records either in the U.S. between two U.S. numbers of between a U.S. and a foreign [number]."
As we reported late Wednesday, the order, granted on April 25, gives the government the power to obtain the information for a three-month period that ends July 19. The NSA collects the data for the FBI. It is not known if similar orders have been issued that allow the collection of such data from other phone companies.
The NSA and FBI are not getting information about the content of conversations. But they are collecting data such as phone numbers, the location of calls, their duration and other key information.

Getting rid of the evidence in NY
A suburban mother-of-two with a keen interest in equestrianism has been accused of running a multi-million dollar marijuana enterprise from a warehouse in New York City.
Andrea Sanderlin was described by friends and neighbours in the upmarket town of Scarsdale as a “soccer mom” who drove a Mercedes SUV and competed in horse riding competitions.
But the federal drug enforcement agency alleges that the 45-year-old was in charge of a “sophisticated operation to grow and process marijuana”, according to the criminal complaint.
The DEA began investigating Sanderlin after a man arrested in a separate drugs raid identified her as growing marijuana in Brooklyn or Queens. Investigators linked Sanderlin, who has two daughters aged 3 and 13, to a warehouse that was using “an unusually high amount of electricity”.
The warehouse was filled with over $3m worth of hydroponic marijuana and the organization covertly produced 3,000 marijuana plants,” Brian Crowell, special agent in charge at the DEA, said in a statement on Tuesday.
Sanderlin was arrested after agents followed her to the warehouse. In a separate raid on her Scarsdale home authorities found books on how to grow marijuana and how to launder money, according to the DEA.
Sanderlin has pleaded not guilty to narcotics trafficking, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. She is awaiting a bond hearing.
Woodworking for fun and profit
I've heard of Jim Morgan and his simple and effective strategy to make money using his basic woodworking skills. I know a retired couple here in town who spend many weekends, traveling to various venues where they can sell the products they make during the Winter months. They travel, and they make a nice supplemental income.
Jim started his woodworking business with NO capital, a few shop tools, and a lot of nerve, in a small 10x20 foot space and grew it into a 1,400 space in the first few months while still remaining as a one-person business!

Oh,, "September Song" now playing, one of my favorites, I was born in September. Might have been better off if my Mom had picked another month, just look up Libra, I have all the negative characteristics.
I was informed yesterday that I am going, with my wife, to her ....... 60th ...... high school reunion, that sounds, so, so, so, old. I'm a few years beyond that, but it's almost something beyond my comprehension. The "high school" years are such a big part of life, at the time. I think we all remember those, then, the life after that is somewhat of a blur, goes by so fast.
Some morning news .......
I can picture some poor guy, living under a bridge, with his wife and three kids, nothing to eat, no home, no job, no prospects, and the wind blows a newspaper under the bridge, he grabs it and reads this ...... A rare Persian carpet sold at Sotheby’s auction house on Wednesday was nabbed by an anonymous caller who dropped $33.7 million to own it. The carpet is from the 17th century and came from the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
And then below it, this article .... Wayne Newton is leaving his home of 45 years, "Casa de Shenandoah." Wayne Newton is downsizing from a 52-acre estate to a $3 million mansion with just 20 acres. The move is part of a bankruptcy reorganization. "Oh Martha, look, poor Wayne had to sell his place and move in to a smaller one, gawd I feel sorry for him."
"Oh, lookee here Martha, some poor guy lost his Cadillac." ... A tractor-trailer carrying a tank of 6,000 gallons of Scotch whiskey overturned on a New Jersey road this week — and then the liquor caught fire, officials said. No one was injured, but the flaming booze did set a Cadillac ablaze before flowing into the gutter, he said.

Casinos in several states are forbidding gamblers from wearing Google Glass, the tiny eyeglasses-mounted device capable of shooting photos, filming video and surfing the Internet. Regulators say the gadgets could be used to cheat at card games.
The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement issued a directive on Monday ordering Atlantic City's 12 casinos to bar casino patrons from using the device. The directive was first reported by The Press of Atlantic City.
Similar bans are in place at casinos in Las Vegas, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Connecticut, among other places.
"If these eyeglasses were worn during a poker game, they could be used to broadcast a patron's hand to a confederate or otherwise be used in a collusive manner," David Rebuck, the division's director wrote in a memo to the casinos.

Many years ago,, in Reno, I had a friend who came up with an idea. We got a dealer we knew well, and my friend, will call him Ralph, and I. Ralph had the great idea of putting a toe switch in his shoe. When he pushed his big toe down, it would signal my shoe, which had a small vibrator in it. He would be on first base, one side of the 21 table, I would be on third, the other side. She would deal the hand. Ralph, who was betting small would play his hand. As the action moved from one side to the other, prior to her coming to my hand, she would "flash" or expose the next card, which would be mine, to Ralph. He would then signal me whether to "hit" or not.
We tried it once. It didn't work, I would jump every time he "shocked" me, I couldn't help it . "I'm good."
"HIT"..... it just never worked. We did get a lot of laughs out of it though.

Rumors are abounding around Columbus, Ohio, after Dr. Gordon Gee announced his retirement, following his insulting remarks about football, the Catholic church, Notre Dame and Catholic Priests.
"Yes, I admit, that I have made derogatory comments about many things, but they have always been spelled correctly, and grammatically correct, and the timing is only coincidental. Urban and I talked about it recently at a conference I sponsored in the Grand Caymans, I forget what the conference was about, but we had a grand time.
The Board of Regents is presently looking for a replacement for Dr. Gee, and one member indicated that they were looking for someone who exhibits the same qualities as his predecessor, and one name surfaced that seemed to be the top candidate at this time.
"Don Imus is the frontrunner at this time," Harley Bruce, Communications Major at OSU and head server with the Campus Catering Company told a local Channel 10 TV sound coordinator as he was clearing dishes from the massive mahogany table where the meeting had been held.
"I heerd 'em, they sed it, reely I did, they sed he be good doin what ol Gee did,I heerd em, reely," Harley stated, and then followed that with some extended hand gestures and stated, "O .. H i ... oh, I forget, too many letters fur me, go bugs."

MLB has been investigating the Biogenesis clinic in Miami for allegedly distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs to players.
ESPN is reporting that Tony Bosch, the founder of the now-shuttered clinic, has made a deal with MLB to cooperate in their investigation and give investigators the ammunition they need to suspend the players under scrutiny. Bosch is expected to begin meeting with officials and naming names within a week.
The announcement of suspensions could follow within two weeks, ESPN said.
Citing a source familiar with the case, ESPN reports the commissioner's office may seek 100-game suspensions for Rodriguez, as well as Ryan Braun and other players, the penalty for a second doping offense.
OSU never fires, people do "spur of the moment" retirements
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State University president Gordon Gee announced his retirement Tuesday after he came under fire for jokingly referring to "those damn Catholics" at Notre Dame and poking fun at the academic quality of other schools.
The remarks were first reported last week by The Associated Press, and Ohio State at the time called them unacceptable and said it had placed Gee on a "remediation plan" to change his behavior.

Chief Executive Christopher Nassetta, speaking at a hospitality conference hosted by New York University on Monday, said he expected other hotel companies to scale back or scrap room service, according to Hilton Worldwide. Fewer guests are using room service and it is not profitable for many hotels, the company reported him saying.
The move could represent a major change for the industry as hotels seek to boost profitability and closely examine what products have value and what can be expended.
"It's big news because room service is iconic within a full service hotel operation," said Scott Berman, who leads the hospitality and leisure practice at PwC. "But for a long time, it's been a drain on its ability to perform."
