What do you do, Daddy? ..... I test toilet paper, Honey. ..... Oh!
You're standing before a wall of white in the toilet paper aisle of your local retailer, thinking: How much difference can there really be between brands X,Y and Z? So you go with the cheapest, or the one you know best, only to be reminded later that, actually there's a big difference between good and bad TP. That's plain to see in Consumer Reports' toilet paper Ratings, where fifty points separate our first and last-place products. So before restocking your supply, be sure to check the results.
Consumer Reports has no relationship with any advertisers on Yahoo!.
We test toilet paper on four key criteria, using a combination of machinery and sensory panelists. Strength is measured by an apparatus called an Instron, which pushes a steel ball through stacked sheets of paper. The same machine also evaluates tearing ease. All-important softness is determined by panelists, who gently caress each toilet paper. Disintegration, indicating how well paper will move through your home's plumbing, involves a water-filled beaker, a 20-inch stirring rod, and a vibrating plate.
The tough tests turn up quite a few stinkers. Take our bottom-rated CVS Earth Essentials, which received sub par scores for both strength and softness. Whole Foods' 365 Everyday Value and Walgreens' Big Roll performed only slightly better. These toilet papers are almost sure to disappoint.
Out of the two dozen-plus products we tested, five performed well enough to make our winner's circle. Three are Walmart exclusives, including a pair of White Cloud products and Great Value Ultra Strong. Softness is superb with all three toilet papers, though only the top-rated White Cloud 3-Ply Ultra Soft and Thick combines softness with superior strength and disintegration. As a result, it was tops in our tests by a wide margin.
If you're not a Walmart shopper, consider our picks from Quilted Northern or CVS.

Stock up on toilet paper, NOW .....
Hornady ammunition, makers of some of the most popular self-defense ammo for concealed carry applications, explained it this way: "We are producing as much as we can, much more than last year, which was a lot more than the year before, etc. No one wants to ship more during this time than we do."
The demand for Hornady's ammo is so great that they've "added presses, lathes, CNC equipment, [and] people and space." They are producing many popular items "24 hours a day" and "several hundred employees work overtime every week" to make as much ammo as possible.
Black Hills Ammunition president Jeff Hoffman is seeing the same demand Hornady is experiencing. He says the only ammo that isn't absolutely flying out the door are some of the rarer, larger caliber hunting rounds.
Supplies of 9mm, 45 acp, 40 S&W, and .223 are scarce in the marketplace, and where they can be found, they are being snatched up by desperate consumers as they are unloaded off trucks at stores like Walmart & Gander Mountain.
So why the shortage? Ammo producers like Hornady say the cause isn't government orders but a "politically-induced buying panic." Although producers say they've seen buying panics in the past, nothing compares to what we're experiencing now.
During panics in the past, gun owners bought up all the ammo they could; during the current panic, even people who don't own guns have been buying ammo for the gun they might buy in the future. At the same time, first-time gun buyers have not only been buying guns but also every bullet for it they can find.
Add to this the fact that some producers can't expand their production as rapidly as Hornady and others have, and it's easier to understand why handgun and AR-15 calibers are scarce.
As Remington ammunition put it: "Remington is at full capacity at this time in a majority of categories of ammunition. We are continuing to look at how to increase capacity and supply our ammunition products to the various channels of distribution/sales that we support."
A few years back, a MEMO was prepared at the White House and sent to a select few, advising them to purchase stock in munitions manufacturers in anticipation of proposed legislation banning and controlling guns. Someone anticipated this surge .. (I made that up) ... Shelves are empty here in Licking County. Oh, the toilet paper stock up .... all that ammo out there .... scares the crap out of me ............. sorry about that.

Trash bags, toilet paper and rubber gloves
Oh, how I wish, that many years ago, I had gone in to manufacturing, and was farsighted enough to see the potential in plastic trash bags, toilet paper and who would have thought then, but rubber gloves.
I cannot imagine how many rubber gloves are used each day, both sterile and non sterile. They are used everywhere. There are white ones and many different colors. Our local hospital uses purple ones, and they told me that they often got "back ordered" on certain sizes, they just can't make them fast enough. I wonder how they are made.
Toilet paper was easy to figure out. The population would increase so much, so usage would go up accordingly.
Trash bags, seems like we are always buying a box of them at Walmart. Just two of us, but we almost do a bag a day. Don't see how, but we do.
I still, just can't imagine, how they are able to manufacture so many rubber gloves, in so many colors, every day.

The July Contest
CONTEST FOR JULY
We all use a lot of toilet paper, and always have those cardboard centers left over.
Our contest this month is to see how many of the folded tubes that you can put into one tube.
Fold them down as tightly as you can, lengthwise and place in a tube. That tube will be the FILLEE, and the inserted tubes are the FILLERS. You will be amazed how soon you can fill one up.
The one who inserts the most folded tubes into one tube, the FILLEE, will receive a befitting, appropriate prize (to be determined) by the prize committee.
