With pink hair and tattoos across her shoulders and neck, U.S. toymaker Mattel's latest collector's edition Barbie doll could be compared more to the edgy female heroine of author Stieg Larrson's best-selling Millennium trilogy than to the more traditional Barbies.
Since its release earlier this month online, the $50 (31 pound) limited edition doll designed by Los Angeles-based fashion company tokidoki and aimed at adult collectors, has sold out but not before causing controversy.
"Is the New 'Tokidoki' Tattoo Barbie Inappropriate for Children?" the magazine U.S. News & World Report asked in a recent headline.
Some parents in the United States also questioned whether the toy company that launched the original Barbie in 1959 should be promoting body art.
"It's teaching kids to want tattoos before they are old enough to dress like that," Kevin Buckner, of Virginia, told a local television station.
No one was available from Mattel to comment on the issue but not all the feedback has been negative. Some adults said the doll reflected modern fashion and pop culture.
On Halloween, San Francisco kids will be handing candy back
San Franciscans have a reputation for trying to do everything differently. This Halloween, some children will be handing candy back instead of looking only into filling up their treat bags. It's all about fighting against cocoa farmers' poverty with the Reverse Trick-or-Treating movement.
Despite years of promises from the major chocolate manufacturers, too little has been done to tackle the documented problem of forced child labor on many farms that supply such manufacturers with their cocoa. Even though chocolate makers continue to enjoy profitable business, the cocoa farmers have been kept in dire straits after all those years. The organization Equal Exchange is donating kits with organic, fairly traded chocolate alongside informational cards so kids - and grownups, too - can give them away in an effort to raise awareness of citizens towards the case for fairly traded goods and farmers' rights.

Two California high school students became one of the first lesbian couples crowned homecoming king and queen in the nation this weekend.
Rebeca Arellano, a senior at Patrick Henry High School, was made the school's first female homecoming king when her name was announced Friday at a pep rally.
"They were chanting my name and it was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had," said Arellano.
Arellano's girlfriend, Haileigh Adams, who also attends Patrick Henry High School, was made homecoming queen at Saturday night's dance.
"I was happier than when I won, my little Haileigh has just been announced Homecoming queen and I couldn't feel happier! Thanks to every single one of you! You guys made this happen and we are all part of something huge. I can't fully express how grateful I am. I am in completely shocked that this happen. My girl looks absolutely flawless," wrote Arellano on Facebook Saturday night.
The two girls told ABC News that they're thankful for the abundance of support they've received from family, friends, and students and staff at the school.
Arellano said one of her teachers told her, "Today school is a bit better because of you girls."
Arellano's Facebook wall is covered with congratulatory notes from her friends.
"Thank you all for allowing this change to happen," Arellano posted on Facebook.

Historic October Storm Slams Tri-State, Hundreds of Thousands Without Power
A freak October Nor'Easter thrashed the tri-state with heavy snow and wild wind gusts, stranding motorists, downing trees and causing outages for more than 1 million tri-state residents. Hundreds of thousands were still without power Sunday, and officials are warning it could be days before many see electricity restored.
Some schools are closed Monday.
West Milford, N.J. reported 19 inches of snow, New York's Orange County had 16 inches in Harriman and New York City had 6 inches in the Bronx and 2 in south Brooklyn, according to the National Weather Service. Armonk in Westchester had 12.5, while Milbrook in Dutchess County saw 21 inches. The storm began with a chilly rain in most places, but soon began switching to snow by late Saturday morning.
The snow caused delays and cancellations at area airports, and slick conditions on roads made driving dangerous. Several deaths across the Northeast are being attributed to the storm.
About 2.9 inches fell in Central Park, shattering previous October snow records, both for the entire month and daily snowfall. An inch has never been recorded in October; the last two times measurable snow fell there was 1952 with half an inch, and in 1925 with eight-tenths of an inch."I think Mother Nature played a trick on us," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a news conference Sunday afternoon, on the eve of Halloween.
Fallen trees, power outages and blocked roads were the main post-storm problems and points of focus for crews across the state, the governor said. Cuomo declared a state of emergency for 13 counties in New York, including Orange, Putnam, Sullivan, Ulster, Richmond, and Westchester counties. Staten Island (Richmond County) was the only borough in New York City to be declared in a state of emergency by Cuomo.
New York City parks were re-opened by noon Sunday, but officials advised New Yorkers to be cautious because heavy snow was still weighing down tree limbs. Crews are continuing to work citywide to address tree damage. Nearly 1,000 trees in Central Park were lost in the storm, according to the Central Park Conservancy.

McDonald's bans mom on clean play-area crusade
CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona mother of four has received a hand-delivered letter from a lawyer prohibiting her from setting foot in eight Phoenix-area McDonald's and threatening her with criminal trespassing charges if she did.
Chandler resident Erin Carr-Jordan has been on a national crusade to clean up fast-food play areas, claiming the pathogens she found in them threaten children's health. She is also an Arizona State University Instructor.
Carr-Jordan tells The Arizona Republic the incident she believes led to the lawyer's letter happened during one of her repeated visits to a Gilbert McDonald's. Carr-Jordan alleges she discovered antibiotic-resistant Staph or MRSA, known to cause potentially life-threatening infections in the restaurant's PlayPlace.
A McDonald's spokeswoman in Illinois says the company has and will continue to talk with Carr-Jordan in an effort to address her concerns, but added that recent actions by Carr-Jordan have become disruptive to its employees and customers.
I guess I am lucky, when I was little there were no McDonald's, or ANY restaurants of that type. We played in a dirt backyard, actually used to dare each other to eat ..... "dirt." People just have too much time on their hands, and are too educated. Maybe the fries and the burgers should be of more concern, and remember too, it is easier to give the kids a few bucks and send them to McDonald's than it is to cook a fresh, home cooked dinner for them, assuming that Mom can cook, because she was probably brought up on McDonald's too. I remember a McDonald's sign in Elko, Nevada, years ago, Over a Million Served.

Candied Ginger Pumpkin Pancakes
2 cups Original Bisquick® mix
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 cup canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix)
2 eggs
1/4 cup toasted pecan halves, finely chopped
1 tablespoon finely chopped crystallized ginger
Pecan halves, if desired
Butter, if desired
Maple-flavored syrup, if desired
1 In large bowl, stir Bisquick mix, pumpkin pie spice, buttermilk, pumpkin and eggs with whisk or fork until blended. Stir in chopped pecans and ginger.
2 Brush nonstick griddle or nonstick skillet with vegetable oil; heat griddle to 350°F or heat skillet over medium heat.
3 For each pancake, pour 1/4 cup of batter onto hot griddle. Cook until edges are dry. Turn; cook other sides until golden brown. Serve topped with remaining ingredients.
Gingrich calls GOP debate bickering unbecoming
Newt Gingrich says heavy bickering among Republican presidential candidates is a turn-off for Americans already repulsed by Washington political gridlock.
Gingrich tells CBS's "The Early Show" that harsh exchanges between Mitt Romney and Rick Perry at the Las Vegas faceoff were unbecoming.
He says "you have to have some sense of maturity and some sense of seriousness." He adds that "it hurt everybody to have bickering going on the way it was going on in that debate."
Gingrich, who has been unable to pierce the upper tier of Republicans in poll standings, says "the American people deserve a chance to see us act in a mature and responsible way." The former House speaker says he's looking forward to a one-on-one debate early next month in Texas with rival Herman Cain.
On another issue, Gingrich says he understands the frustrations behind the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations but doesn't approve of all the tactics that have been used by the protesters.

Andy Rooney hospitalized in serious condition
Andy Rooney, who delivered his last essay on "60 Minutes" three weeks ago, was in the hospital Tuesday after developing serious complications following surgery.
CBS said the 92-year-old writer's condition was stable and, at the request of his family, offered no other information about his medical problems or where he was hospitalized.
The three-time Emmy-winner was a regular presence on television's most popular newsmagazine. Since 1978, "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney" wrapped up the Sunday night program, often with a look at the absurdities of life and language.
Rooney could talk about what was in the news or what was in his closet. One of his Emmy Awards was for an essay about whether there was a real Mrs. Smith behind Mrs. Smith's Pies.
On Oct. 2, he delivered his 1,097th and final essay, saying it was a moment he dreaded.
"I wish I could do this forever. I can't, though," he said.

The Democrats and Liberals are keeping really quiet about this. Is There any wonder why Obama stayed away from Wisconsin on his latest Campaign Tour (Listening Tour, Cough! Cough!), even though he was right next door. Wisconsin is the last place they want to talk about, just like New Jersey !

Some school districts went from a $400,000 deficit to a $1,500,000 surplus as a result. They are even hiring new teachers, not firing like the Liberals said would happen. Why?
It seems that the insurance company that provided all the "so-called" benefits to the teachers was an insurance company owned and operated by the teacher's union. Since the outfit was guaranteed to get the insurance business from the teachers, and the State had to pay for it (not the teachers) the insurance company was increasing annual costs every single year to become the most expensive insurance company in the state. Then the company was donating millions and millions of dollars to its favorite democrat politicians who, when they got elected, guaranteed to keep funding the union's outrageous costs. In other words, the insurance company was a "pass through" for Wisconsin taxpayer money directly to the democrat politicians.
Nice racket, and this is the racket that is going on in every single State that allows collective bargaining. No wonder the States are taking it away. Now the State of Wisconsin is free to put the insurance contract out for bids and, lo and behold, they have saved so much money it has turned deficits into surplus amounts. As a result, none of the teachers had to be laid off, everyone got a raise, etc., etc., and the taxpayers of Wisconsin don't have to pay more taxes to fund the union's political ambitions.
If you weren't aware of the reasons Gov. Walker was fighting to take away collective bargaining, it gives you an idea of the problem the Republican Party has. Outside of one or two, none of them know how to speak up and explain properly what the problem was. We could sure use a Ronald Reagan now, someone who could explain things for people to understand, since we know that people don't like to read anymore.

DANDELION WINE
Found this and thought it was interesting. I had some years ago, took me many hours to drive home, I was on a circular driveway at a neighbors, who lived across the road from us, just kept going around in circles, much to the delight of our neighbors, who just stood and watched.
MAKE AT YOUR OWN RISK ....."A number of inquiries have been received at the Tribune for a receipt how to make dandelion wine. The following is said to be the best method known: Take three quarts dandelion blossoms; put one gallon boiling water on them; let stand 24 hours; strain; add three pounds sugar and let boil one hour; cool and add the peelings and juices of two oranges and two lemons; 1 table spoon yeast; one pint molasses; let stand ten days; then strain and put in jugs and let stand two months; bottle."

Sometimes it DOES take a Rocket Scientist!!
British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers. When the gun was fired,
the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two, and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow. The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the US scientists for suggestions.
NASA responded with a one-line memo --
"Defrost the chicken!"
