Wisconsin's Political Split Hardens Into Great Divide

by David Schaper

No state may be more politically polarized right now than Wisconsin. That follows the effort by Republican Gov. Scott Walker to eliminate the collective bargaining rights of most public workers there. The divide is most apparent between Wisconsin's biggest cities and its smallest towns.

Wisconsin is one of those rare states that seems to go back and forth between electing Democrats and Republicans almost every cycle. President Obama won it by a wide margin in 2008, but then the state flipped dramatically last year with a near Republican sweep — and last month's state supreme court election was so close, votes are still being recounted.

"Wisconsin is not just a battleground state, Wisconsin is not just a divided state, but we're literally a 50-50 state," says Mordecai Lee, a former state lawmaker who's now a professor of Governmental Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

"It's almost like Wisconsin is so evenly split that there must be one little old lady who tilts our elections one way or the other, I mean, that's how close we are," he says. "It's just unbelievable."

The battle over collective bargaining is hardening views in the state that gave birth to the nation's first public unions. It's clear Wisconsinites are taking sides.

Did anyone else notice it?

I don't know where the coach was heading, but the newly married couple were heading somewhere, politely waving to the crowd.

Out of somewhere came a riderless black house that seemed to pass on the left side of the carriage. I have heard no one comment on it.

Just wondering if anyone else noticed it, or if you had heard what it was.

Found this link, can't see where the rider fell off, or where he was, and what is it with that hat?

Another Obama Story ......... Thanks Ernie...

Receently, President Obama went to a primary school to talk to the children to get a little PR. After his talk he offered a question time. One little boy puts up his hand and Obama asks him his name.

"Stanley," responds the little boy.

"And what is your question, Stanley?"

"I have 4 questions:

First, why did the USA Bomb Libya without the support of the Congress? Second, why are you President when John McCain got more votes? Third, whatever happened to Osama Bin Laden?" Fourth, why are we so worried about gay-marriage when 1/2 of all Americans don't have health insurance?

Just then, the bell rang for recess. Obama informed the kiddies that they will continue after recess.

When they resume Obama says, "OK, where were we? Oh, that 's right: question time. Who has a question?"

Another little boy puts up his hand. Obama points him out and asks him his name.

"Steve," he responds.

"And what is your question, Steve?"

Actually, I have 6 questions. First, why did the USA Bomb Libya without the support of the Congress? Second, why are you President when John McCain got more votes? Third, whatever happened to Osama Bin Laden? Fourth, why are we so worried about gay marriage when 1/2 of all Americans don't have health insurance? Fifth, why did the recess bell go off 20 minutes early? And sixth, what the hell happened to Stanley?"

Getting Old

I am getting old, I missed the NFL Draft and the Wedding ............... I must be in the minority ... how did they ever manage to make the draft a popular TV show? TV can just do about anything.

The Poor Guy - TinC Article

I took Marilyn in to Walmart this morning to do her demo, and as I was walking out I walked by the meat counter, I like to look at the beef, can't afford to buy any, but I like to look at it. As I walked by, there was a man also looking, and I noticed that he was crying.

I asked if there was anything I could do. He said "No, I'm a CHAIN SMOKER, I love beef, and I drive many miles a day......................"

Report: Feds say OSU players traded, sold 36 items

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A newspaper reports that Ohio State football players are alleged to have improperly traded dozens of items to the owner of a tattoo parlor, receiving tattoos, $14,000, and in one case a sport-utility vehicle.

The report by The Columbus Dispatch says it obtained a letter Thursday that was sent from the U.S. Department of Justice to Ohio State officials in December. The document lists 36 items that players are said to have sold to Eddie Rife or traded for tattoos since 2008.

The newspaper reports that investigators say one player received a 2003 Chevy Tahoe, purchased by Rife for $3,500, in exchange for a watch and passes to the 2010 Rose Bowl.

Only a portion of the transactions were deemed violations by the NCAA, and five players have been suspended for the first five games of the upcoming season. A related NCAA investigation into coach Jim Tressel continues.

Wednesday Evening in Ohio, USA

Been a lazy day in Ohio, a little sun, mostly cloudy, a little rain, and a lot of news today, evening news is just on, a lot of thoughts come to mind.

Obama finally, after a couple of million  dollars of attorneys and who knows what else, shows us a form of some kind that indicates he was born on Hawaii. See, what a couple million dollars and being president of the United States can get for you. Timing was good though, Trump was leading him in the polls, so he tried to shut him up, calling him a circus barker or something. WHY did he wait so long, who spend so much money on it, does not make sense. Convinces me, more than ever, that he is not a citizen, it will never be proven, so get on with life.

Flooding everywhere, rain, tornado's, fires, a life off in Florida, a few wars going on, a lot of politics, and of course, the wedding. Probably a billion spent on that. Enough said.

I think Obama timed his birth certificate "bombshell" to overshadow the wedding because he wasn't invited. But he flew to Chicago today to be on Oprah, and then flying to Florida for the lift off, they fly back to Washington, I imagine. That plane certainly gets a lot of use.

Brian Williams made a slip of the tongue, called Obama's Birth Certificate a Gift Certificate ........... out of the mouthes of Brians come............. well, you know.

Of course the NFL draft is BIG,a show were you convert spoiled college football players into millionaires. How the draft became so big is hard to figure out, those TV guys can do just about anything. Look what they did to the Super Bowl. TV+SPORTS=ADVERTISING=MONEY. Easy to figure, isn't it?

I love this one ..................

A married couple went to he hospital to have their baby delivered. Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labour pain to the father.

He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favour of it. The doctor set the pain transfer dial to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before.

But as the labour progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and bump it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine.

The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point they decided to try for 50%.

The husband continued to feel quite well. Since it was obviously helping out his wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him.

The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain.

She and her husband were ecstatic.

When they got home, the mailman was lying dead on their porch.

Over 1 Million Take Trump for President Poll

By Jim Meyers

Online participants in the ongoing survey, a non-scientific poll, also support Trump by a wide margin in a head-to-head matchup with President Barack Obama.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the poll had received 1,026,891 responses, the largest poll ever fielded by Newsmax.

If the election were held today, Trump — who says he is seriously considering a run for president in 2012 — would beat Obama in a landslide, 65 percent to 16 percent. But that lead is just as sizeable when Trump faces off against the best and the brightest in the oft-mentioned field of GOP contenders for 2012.

Trump takes 55 percent of the vote in a field including Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, and Tim Pawlenty. His closest competitor, according to the poll, is former Massachusetts Gov. Romney with 10 percent of the vote.

The online poll has already attracted considerable attention in the media. Outlets such as U.S. News & World Report, FoxNews.com, the “Fox & Friends” TV show, Fox News’ Sean Hannity, and Slate.com have all mentioned the poll in recent days.

Wonder how much money they collected, you had to donate to vote ...... PLUS the same poll was on the RNC site ........ they had to make a few bucks............

Duplicate PLEA for MONEY from the RNC different SOURCE

Got the same email from NEWSMAX ......... same poll .............. only works if you do a donation.

I just took my name off of the RNC mailing list as well as the RNC.

Just ONCE it would be nice to see a piece mailed to me with QUALIFICATIONS and GOALS of a candidate, rather than just a PLEA for money.

Makes you wonder WHY there are so MANY INDEPENDENTS, doesn't it.

Politics and our political system just makes you "proud" to be an American

VOTE for your favorite ................. IF you send money - Reince Priebus

Just got an email from  Reince Priebus, RNC Chairman, "Who Would You Vote For" type of thing.
L   O   N   G   list of names, most I have not even heard of. I scrolled down the list and found a name that I am leaning towards, voted, then scrolled down, they wanted a donation, name address, etc., and if you did not donate, you could go no further and your vote was not counted.

I sent them an email, my reply:

What ABSOLUTE BULL SHIT, pardon my language .... why take some STUPID poll when you are doing NOTHING MORE than asking for money. I cannot see where ANY funding is going to further the party. What a list of candidates. Give up and FORGET IT, with the leadership of the party, and the direction it is heading, there is NO WAY that Obama will be defeated. The ONLY way he might be defeated would be if Hillary did something surprising and got the nomination.

With leadership and direction like the RNC now has, invest in "White Flags" that we will all have available when we surrender in 2012. Surrender now and save us all a lot of time and money, or buy tickets on the Titanic, both the ship and the RNC are SINKING.

Haven't Password-Protected Your Router? This Story May Convince You To

by Mark Memmott

As he lay on the floor "with assault weapons trained on him" and federal agents accusing him of being a pedophile and pornographer, a man in Buffalo, N.Y., realized he'd made an awful mistake.

He hadn't password-protected his new router and someone had been using his wireless connection to download child porn.

And, as The Associated Press writes, that man's experience — and similar things that have happened to others — underscores how important it is to password-protect a wireless router.

There is another angle to the story, writes Radley Balko at the Reason blog: Police might want to "see if a suspect's wireless network is secure, and therefore that they have the right guy, before they break into his home and point their guns at his head."

Money versus Integrity

I guess when you make way over TWO MILLION as a football coach, you just hate leave your job. Lie a little, cheat a little, a few little white lies, whatever it takes, but WIN, GO TO BOWL GAMES, WIN BOWL GAMES, Conference Wins.

Now, he and the Ohio State program are being raked over the coals, or as most of the football players call it, Da Ohio State University.

13 coaches have been in his situation with the NCAA, only one survived. I honestly don't see how they can side with and keep him as coach. He lied, was in breach of contract, etc. I wonder if any other coach at OSU would still be around under similar circumstances.

Fortunately, I exited the world of OSU fans, a number of years ago. I did not like what their program had resorted to. Earle Bruce firing upset me, they went to the bottom of the barrel and hired one Eldon Miller to coach basketball, a decision I will never understand. Then they brought in John Cooper from ASU to coach football, ASU sent the AD at OSU a Thank You card

Now, Jim Tressel, looks like a Methodist minister, from reports I have received, left a questionable legacy at powerhouse Youngstown State. Young boys dreamed of playing at Youngstown State, "NO Dad, I don't want to go to Notre Dame, I want to go to Youngstown State." Maybe the promises made were better there.

Now he hid information that may have lead to suspensions and a loss in a bowl game, and that could not happen, maybe there was a "clause" in his contact about bonus money for bowl victories. He specifically signed a contract about "disclosure of certain information," which he lied about and did not disclose, and the won. Nothing happened, now we know who actually has all the "power" at Da Ohio State University.

My guess is that he has had a vasectomy, because if he had "any" he would resign, and give OSU an opportunity to regain some resemblance of credibility, not prolong all of this for many months.

Only 1 out of 13 has survived such a situation, I hope soon, it will be 1 out of 14.

At least he has not dotted the "I" , that would be difficult to undo.

Can President Obama be defeated in 2012?

Can President Obama be defeated in 2012?
No. He can't. I am going on record as saying that President Barak Obama will win a second term.

The media won't tell you this because a good election campaign means hundreds of millions (or in Obama's case billions from billionaire philanthropist George Soros as his primary funder) of dollars to them in advertising.
But the truth is, there simply are no conditions under which Barak Obama can be defeated in 2012.
The quality of the Republican candidate doesn't matter. Obama gets reelected.
Nine percent unemployment? No problem. Obama will win.
Gas prices moving toward five dollars a gallon? He still wins.
The economy soars or goes into the gutter. Obama wins.
War in the Middle East ? He wins a second term.
America's role as the leading Superpower disappears? Hurrah for Barak Obama!
The U.S. government rushes toward bankruptcy, the dollar continues to sink on world markets and the price of daily goods and services soars due to inflation fueled by Obama's extraordinary deficit spending? Obama wins handily.
You are crazy Williams. Don't you understand how volatile politics can be when overall economic, government, and world conditions are declining?
Sure I do. And that's why I know Obama will win. The American people are notoriously ignorant of economics. And economics is the key to why Obama should be defeated.
Even when Obama's policies lead the nation to final ruin, the majority of the American people are going to believe the bait-and-switch tactics Obama and his supporters in the media will use to explain why it isn't his fault.
After all, things were much worse than understood when he took office.
Obama's reelection is really a very, very simple math problem.

Consider the following:
     1) Blacks will vote for Obama blindly. Period. Doesn't matter what he does. It's a race thing. He's one of us,
     2) College educated women will vote for Obama. Though they will be offended by this, they swoon at his oratory. It's really not more complex than that,
     3) Liberals will vote for Obama. He is their great hope,
     4) Democrats will vote for Obama. He is the leader of their party and his coattails will carry them to victory nationwide,
     5) Hispanics will vote for Obama. He is the path to citizenship for those who are illegal and Hispanic leaders recognize the political clout they carry in the Democratic Party,
     6) Union members will vote overwhelmingly for Obama. He is their key to money and power in business, state and local politics,
     7) Big Business will support Obama. They already have. He has almost $1 Billion dollars in his reelection purse gained largely from his connections with Big Business and is gaining more everyday. Big Business loves Obama because he gives them access to taxpayer money so long as they support his social and political agenda,
     8) The media love him. They may attack the people who work for him, but they love him. After all, to not love him would be racist,
     9) Most other minorities and special interest groups will vote for him. Oddly, the overwhelming majority of Jews and Muslims will support him because they won't vote Republican.
      American Indians will support him.
Obviously homosexuals tend to vote Democratic.
10) Approximately half of independents will vote for Obama. And he doesn't need anywhere near that number because he has all of the groups previously mentioned.
The President will win an overwhelming victory in 2012. -- Dr. Walter Williams

Obama CANNOT beat Hillary
Obama CANNOT win over McCain
NO WAY Obama Health care can win
In my opinion, only ONE Candidate can stand a chance, Donald Trump, and only if he SHUTS UP about the damned birth certificate, and starts pounding out about BUSINESS, HIS business experience, and what he can do as a BUSINESSMAN not a POLITICIAN to turn things around. He is carrying some negative baggage, but all of his POSITIVE BAGGAGE has to be exploited. I agree with most of the above by Dr. Williams. I have said all along that the "Wait till 2012" was going to be a BIG disappointment to the Republicans unless they got off of their ... and started getting things done.

Energy saving light bulbs 'contain cancer causing chemicals'

By Victoria Ward

Their report advises that the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on.

Peter Braun, who carried out the tests at the Berlin's Alab Laboratory, said: “For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.”

The bulbs are already widely used in the UK following EU direction to phase out traditional incandescent lighting by the end of this year.

But the German scientists claimed that several carcinogenic chemicals and toxins were released when the environmentally-friendly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were switched on, including phenol, naphthalene and styrene.

Andreas Kirchner, of the Federation of German Engineers, said: “Electrical smog develops around these lamps.

“I, therefore, use them only very economically. They should not be used in unventilated areas and definitely not in the proximity of the head.”

British experts insisted that more research was needed and urged consumers not to panic.

Dr Michelle Bloor, senior lecturer in Environmental Science at Portsmouth University, told the Daily Express: “Further independent studies would need to be undertaken to back up the presented German research.”

The Department for the Environment insists the bulbs are safe, despite the fact that they contain small amounts of mercury which would leak out if the glass was broken.

Advice on its website states: “Energy efficient light bulbs are not a danger to the public.

“Although they contain mercury, limited at 5mg per lamp, it cannot escape from a lamp that is intact.

“In any case, the very small amount contained in an energy efficient bulb is unlikely to cause harm even if the lamp should be broken.”

The latest report follows claims by Abraham Haim, a professor of biology at Haifa University in Israel, that the bulbs could result in higher breast cancer rates if used late at night.

He said that the bluer light that CFLs emitted closely mimicked daylight, disrupting the body's production of the hormone melatonin more than older-style filament bulbs, which cast a yellower light.

The Migraine Action Association has warned that they could trigger migraines and skin care specialists have claimed that their intense light could exacerbate a range of existing skin problems.

Texans Pray For Rain As Fires Consume Homes

by BJ Austin

Reinforcements are flowing into drought-ravaged Texas as it battles two dozen wildfires burning across the state. The fires have razed 1.8 million acres so far and destroyed hundreds of homes. On Thursday, Gov. Rick Perry even officially declared Easter weekend to be three "Days of Prayer for Rain."

One of the biggest fires began more than a week ago at the south end of Possum Kingdom Lake, about 70 miles west of Fort Worth. It's since merged with other fires in the area, prompting the U.S. Forest Service to assume command of coordinated efforts last week.

Federal Firefighters Step In

Liz Caldwell, with the U.S. Forest Service, helped open the Incident Command Post in Mineral Wells, Texas, on Tuesday, as federal fire crews arrived to relieve exhausted local and state firefighters.

"They did a great job, an excellent job," Caldwell says of the firefighters. "But [the fire] was in so many places. The magnitude was so great in different areas."

LM Otero/AP Firefighter Craig Howard yells to fire crews as they take up positions to save a house from the wildfire near Possum Kingdom, Texas, on Tuesday.

Caldwell keeps things running smoothly at the ICP, not far from Possum Kingdom Lake. It's not the chaotic scene one might expect in such a mammoth undertaking. It's organized and fairly quiet as hardworking firefighters come and go. You can tell the ones coming in from the field; they're sweaty, covered in soot — and thirsty.

The fire has destroyed more than 150 homes. Ken Dixon is lucky; his home is not one of them. He's grateful and surprised, considering the scene he fled a week ago. He grabbed his wife, the dog and jumped in the truck.

"Can't say exactly how far it was, but we could see flames on three sides. So that's when we left," he says.

Walmart Warnings on Facebook

Getting some warnings about our local Walmart .... it is more like Christmas than Easter.

Now, that is a Walmart on North 21st Street, in Newark, Ohio. It was crowded at 10:00 this morning, but it has gotten worse. They amaze me how much business they do, right here in Newark, and there is another one not too far away, even BIGGER than our local one.

I have been watching their candy department this week, they have kept two or three people stocking shelves all week. The amount of product that passes through that store is unbelievable.

WHAT A TOUCH OF CLASS LOOKS LIKE.

There's a group of ladies in the Dallas area who make and stuff neck pillows for soldiers coming through DFW airport.

They go to the airport and meet the incoming planes every week and greet the soldiers coming back for a few weeks R&R, give them a pillow, tell them they pray for them, and thank them for their service.

The lady who took the pictures said everyone was so surprised to see George and Laura Bush recently just standing quietly in the waiting area with others who come to meet the troop planes.

She said it was amazing to watch the faces of the soldiers light up in recognition when they spotted them, and that many came over to speak and shake hands.

Enlighten me if any of you can remember any ex-president and wife that stood in line at an airport to greet our servicemen and women as they are coming home.

Definitely a big difference between talkers and doers.

He doesn't have to do anything like this and the News sure isn't showing it.

Feds to Regulate Ice Makers

April 19th, 2011

In its latest effort to save the planet from global warming, the U.S. government is on the verge of regulating ice makers commonly found in many refrigerators because they increase energy consumption by a good 12 to 20%.

This could be detrimental to the environment since there are more than 100 million refrigerators across the nation and they devour a substantial chunk of the electricity used by all households. Energy consumed by refrigerators as a whole has long been documented but not what the ice makers inside their freezers use individually.

Americans can finally sleep soundly through the night because government scientists have completed the ice maker study and the findings have been beautifully laid out in a 79-page report titled Energy Consumption of Automatic Ice Makers Installed in Domestic Refrigerators. The information is being used to make a case for regulating the popular little machines that are contributing to the planet’s destruction.

In a nutshell, the culprit is the tiny motor inside the freezing system that’s used to release ice from the mold and into a tray. Because the motor is specially built to function in a cold setting, it requires an internal heater to keep it from freezing up. Here’s where it gets serious; heating elements require a lot of power and that’s where the extra energy consumption kicks in.

I wonder if this will affect ice hockey?

Indie Truckers: Keep Big Brother Out Of My Cab

by Nell Greenfieldboyce

Terry Button is a fifth-generation farmer from upstate New York who also works as a long-distance trucker, hauling hay and produce up and down the East Coast.

When I'm away from home, this is my home. Does somebody come in your front door and decide, 'I want to plug into your computer and see where you've been today'?

He's proud of his truck and likes it just the way it is. Inside, the cab is homey and low-tech, with a bed behind the two seats and a CB radio. There's no cruise control and no GPS telling him where to go.

"Canada is that way, Boston is that way, California is that way, Florida is that way," Button jokes. "I can figure out how to get there. I don't need a little box on the dash, telling me, 'Turn left, turn right.' "

But if a new rule proposed by the Department of Transportation goes through, Button will be required to have a high-tech little box on his dashboard — one that's hooked up to his engine — to automatically record how many hours he drives.

"I can't think of anything good that would come from this. If I could, I would tell you honestly, and I can't," says Button. He cares a lot about safety but thinks the proposed new rule would be a mistake.

The device would be a new way to track how well truckers stick to the federal limits on driving hours that exist to keep dangerously tired truckers off the road. Such driving restrictions have been around since the 1930s, and truck drivers document all of their working hours in daily log books. Currently, they are supposed to work for no more than a 14-hour stretch, and only 11 of those hours can be driving hours.

But safety advocates have long argued that these handwritten logs are so easy to fake that they're a joke, noting that they're sometimes referred to in CB slang as "comic books," and that drivers can just lie on the logs and work far more hours.

"Tired truckers are a major, major safety problem," says Jackie Gillan of the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety in Washington, D.C. Her group has been urging the government to require electronic onboard recorders for more than 15 years. "Paper log books are easily manipulated. They are easily falsified."

A Compliment ....................

Drew Carey, The Price is Right ..

He comes out each day, looking great, in a SUIT, SHIRT and TIE ............. Sometimes a regular tie sometimes a bow tie, BUT HE LOOKS NICE, and he respects his audience enough to dress for the occasion ...... I compliment him. He came out in the past with an open collar, but I have not seen him do that for quite a while.

The announcer, George Gray wears a suit, shirt and tie, HE LOOKS NICE.

The Girls are dressed tastefully, and they are all attractive, in all of their appropriate attire, and they all (with the exception of a few contestants) conduct themselves admirably.

The Producers, or those in control of the show, are to be complimented.

The Lawyer's Porsche

A Lawyer parked his brand new Porsche in front of his office to show it off to his colleagues.

As he's getting out of the car, a truck comes speeding along too close to the curb and takes off the door before zooming off.

More than a little distraught, the Attorney grabs his mobile phone and calls the police.

Five minutes later, the police arrive. Before the policeman has a chance to ask any questions, the Attorney starts screaming hysterically: "My Porsche, my beautiful silver Porsche is ruined. No matter how long it's at the body shop, it'll simply never be the same again!"

After the man finally finishes his rant, the policeman shakes his head in disgust.

"I can't believe how materialistic you Lawyers are," he says. "You are so focused on your possessions that you don't notice anything else in your life."

"How can you say such a thing at a time like this?" sobs the Porsche owner.

The policeman replies: "Didn't you realize that your arm was torn off when the truck hit you?"

The Lawyer looks down in horror.

"Oh, good Lord!" he screams ... "Where's my Rolex????"

Chinese wedding night

A young Chinese couple - a cook and a waitress working the same restaurant - gets married. This is her first time, and the truth be told, it is his first time also.

On their wedding night, she cowers naked under the sheets as her husband undresses in the darkness. He climbs in to bed next to her and tries to be reassuring.

'My darring,' he whispers, 'I know is your firss time and you berry frighten. I pomise you, I give anything you wan, I do anyting - juss anyting you wan. You juss ask. So. Whatchu wan?' he says, trying to sound experienced and worldly, which he hopes will impress her.

Thoughtful silence follows and he waits patiently (and eagerly) for her request. She eventually shyly whispers back, 'I want to try something I have heard about from other girls. Numbaa 69.'

More thoughtful silence, this time from him.

Eventually, in a puzzled tone, he asks her: 'You want.... Garlic Chicken with steam vegetable?

I didn't want a bath ................

You say that You Love Me - and then do this to me!

I couldn't resist the urge to enter this one

If they didn't want Air Traffic Controllers to take naps, why did they name the airport after Ronald Reagan?

Old "Twitch"

Just had a flashback to my high school and junior high school days, Oakwood in Dayton, Ohio. Actually it was out in Oakwood, a suburb of Dayton, out South, where the more affluent lived. Actually, Orville Wright lived out there, the Patterson Estate, one of the founders of National Cash Register. Charles "Boss" Kettering lived nearby, he invented the electric starter for the automobile, among other things.

This involved Mr. Alford, I forget what he taught, but Mr. Alford has a slight nervous "twitch." around his mouth, and he moved his head a little when it happened.

I think his class was the first one after lunch.

Well, we would  have iced tea for lunch, generally get a refill, and save the lemon slices, which we would then take into class, and as Mr. Alford was giving his lecture, we would start sucking and chewing on the lemon slices, which would cause his mouth to start filling with saliva, followed by a lot of swallowing.

We just did it on a few occasions, but it worked each time we did it.

"Twitch" is gone, I am sure, but I often think of him.

US MAY LOSE ITS GOOD CREDIT RATING

Wouldn't it be neat if the Government got turned down by VISA because of their credit rating. But, how could we possibly have a good credit rating anyway with the debt we have?

Who would get the calls from Capital One if payments are not made on time?

Would Obama get calls all day, "All information obtained will be used to collect a debt."

I wonder what the government pays, each month, on credit card charges?

MEMO

From: VISA
To: Barack Obama

A recent check of your Credit Rating reveals that you are heavily in debt and are having a tremendous cash flow problem, and quite frankly, have a lousy Credit Rating. If you can get a co-signer, such as China, your account may be re-evaluated.

Today in 1775, the first shots of the American Revolution were fired at Lexington, Massachusetts, when about 40 militiamen formed ranks against 700 British Red Coats on their way to Concord.

"Don't fire unless fired upon. But if they want a war let it begin here." --Captain John Parker, commander of the militiamen at Lexington, Massachusetts, on sighting British Troops

Great Photograph

This picture says it all .... I think it's great.

In my comments, what do you think a good title would be for this photograph?

Seattle Weather in Ohio

Forty-six degrees and Cloudy in Ohio today, reminds me of when I lived in Seattle, Washington. I was in the Navy, aboard the USS William T. Mitchell TAP114. I think I went aboard her in the Fall of '54. She was only in port a week or so and then we would ship out to Yokohama and Korea, a week or so over there, and then back to Seattle for a week or so.

I think it was well after Christmas when I was finally able, because of rain, to get out on the golf course. The people out there just get used to a lot of rain. Many things are under a roof. I remember a driving range that was under a roof, two decker as I recall. It was unusual to me in those days.

But, with all the trees and "greenery" around there was a fantastic, fresh aroma in the air, a lot of cedar and pine trees. I was actually "based" in Seattle for two years but only spent a few days there. We often pulled into San Francisco a "yard" period there, and some time in San Diego.

So, I am sitting here, looking out the front window, reminiscing about my time in the Navy, a good four years. In some respects I wish I had done my "20" or so in the Navy, would have missed out on a lot though, so will just sit and reminisce.

The Party is in Good Hands

I received an Email from GOP.com today, they have come up with some great defensive strategy, they are going to hold a U-tube contest on why you can't afford to pay any more taxes. Is that a great idea, or what. Obama is raising a BILLION and the GOP is holding a U-tube contest. And, the winner gets a $100 gift certificate at the GOP site to buy t-shirts, coffee mugs and hats.

My guess is that the Obama Camp is in a state of disrepair, this changes their whole strategy.

Put that idea NUMBER ONE on the list, "When in trouble, start a U-tube contest."

Who said the Republicans are in trouble?

Just a Thought

There is something wrong, and it is obscene to me that with all the devastation and death going on in this country right now, and our leader is out campaigning and raising money so he can fill his coffers to a BILLION to run for an office that pays $140 thousand, I think it is. I would rather see those who we pay to run the country would show more concern about the country. How many victims could benefit from that BILLION  dollars?

The good news, Air Traffic Controllers will now get nine hours of sleep, maybe even get to take a nap while at work.

And, we are sending money and aid all over the world, Japan Haiti, everywhere, wonder if there is any left for the folks in North Carolina and the other devastated areas. Wonder how many countries will send us money to help? Who said NONE?

Philadelphia Orchestra To Seek Bankruptcy Protection

by The Associated Press

The world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra, long considered one of the best in the nation, will be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Board chairman Richard Worley said members made a nearly unanimous vote Saturday to file for reorganization in a federal bankruptcy court in Philadelphia after a "long meeting, thoughtful meeting, emotional meeting."

"We're running low on cash, we're running a deficit, and we have to put ourselves in a position to attract investment funds to help us," Worley told reporters.

Allison Vulgamore, president and chief executive officer, also cited a "tremendous decline" in audiences over the past five years.

Officials stressed, however, that concerts would go on as scheduled, including the evening's performance of a Mahler symphony. And they said a revitalization campaign was planned to increase revenues by about two-thirds and bring in new art and audiences.

Orchestra musicians who object to a bankruptcy filing distributed leaflets to the audience before Thursday night's concert, calling such an action "unnecessary" and saying it would have "both an immediate and a long-term devastating impact" on the orchestra. Union officials and others have cited the orchestra's $140 million endowment, but Vulgamore said use of that money was restricted.

"Thank heavens it's there, it's the future we have to live off of," she said. "If we take that money now, then we frankly don't have annual monies to keep going."

Americans Worked 102 Days to Pay Taxes

Tax Freedom Day arrived on Tuesday, April 12 this year — Americans worked for the first 102 days of 2011 just to earn enough to pay their federal, state, and local taxes.

The date is three days later than in 2010, meaning that taxes across the board have gone up this year, according to the Tax Foundation, which computes Tax Freedom Day each year.

Americans will pay more in taxes this year than on groceries, clothing, and shelter combined, the Foundation noted.

The computation of Tax Freedom Day ignores the budget deficit and figures in only taxes that will actually be collected this year. If the federal government was seeking to collect enough in taxes to finance all of its spending, Tax Freedom Day would not arrive until May 23.

The latest-ever Tax Freedom Day was May 1, 2000.

On top of federal income tax, all but seven states levy an income tax, as do some localities. The Foundation projects that Americans will work 36 days this year to pay those income taxes, plus 22 days to pay for payroll taxes, which fund Social Security and Medicare.

They will also work 15 days to pay sales and excise taxes, 12 days to pay property taxes, and 12 days to cover corporate income taxes.

Due to different state and local tax rates, and differences in average income subject to federal taxes, total tax burdens vary from state to state. This year Americans in 13 states will work more than 102 days to pay their taxes, including Connecticut (122 days), New Jersey (119 days), and New York (114 days).

The lightest tax burden will affect workers in Mississippi (85 days), Tennessee (86 days), and South Carolina (88 days).

A message from Joe ...............

Joe Conforte is on my Facebook now. I sent this to him the other day .............. For those who don't know who he is, Google his name. He is a big part of Nevada history. I knew of him, dealt craps to him on a number of occasions, and have sat and talked with him also. He is presently in "exile" in Brasil. There have been a number of TV Specials on him.

Joe, dealt craps to you a few times at the Primm, and talked with you a few times also at the Nugget in Sparks when you were doing some transactions. I remember the Cordovan colored Lincoln, brautiful. Remember a "bodyguard" that used to play 21 at the Nevada Club, cried when he lost. Good to know you are still around. I have a blog on Nevada, always get hits when your name comes up. I remember the "good old days."

I got a reply from him, thought some might be interested to know what he said ...............

Joe, I always like to read about Nevada and especially those days, why don't you put up the link to your blog, that way everybody can see it. I remember that Lincoln -- here in Rio I have a black Chrysler 300 sedan -- and as for the bodyguard who cried . . . I never knew that! What years was that?

Glad to hear from him, brings back a lot of good old Nevada Memories .....

Actor Nicolas Cage arrested in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – Actor Nicolas Cage was arrested after he got drunk in the city's French Quarter and argued in the street with his wife over whether a house they were in front of was theirs, police said Saturday.

The couple was in front of a home that Cage insisted they were renting, police said. When she said it wasn't theirs, Cage grabbed her arm, according to a police news release.

Cage started hitting vehicles and tried to get into a taxi, police said. An officer saw that Cage was drunk and told him to get out of the cab. Cage then started yelling at the officer.

The actor has been booked on charges of domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace and public drunkenness. He was released on $11,000 bond Saturday.

Representatives for Cage could not immediately be reached Saturday.

Cage has been a frequent visitor to New Orleans, where he has owned property and shot movies. He has also had financial troubles, despite being one of the highest-paid stars in Hollywood.

He had been behind on taxes and has said he's had to sell numerous assets because of his finances. He sued his former business manager in October 2009 for $20 million, claiming the man's advice led him to financial ruin.

Postal Service in Statue of Liberty stamp photo mix-up

The US Postal Service regrets issuing a stamp featuring a photo of a Las Vegas casino's replica Statue of Liberty rather than the original in New York harbour, a spokesman has said.

But the postal service printed three billion of the first-class stamps and will continue to sell them, he said.

And the agency would have selected the photograph anyway, he said.

A stamp collector discovered the mix-up after noting discrepancies between the stamp image and the copper original.

The mix-up was first reported by Linn's Stamp News, a publication for philatelists.

It points out that the photo used on the stamp shows a rectangular patch on the crown that is present on the 14-year-old statue at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, but not on the 305ft (93m) copper statue in New York.

In addition, the facial features on the Las Vegas replica are more sharply defined than on the original.

The stamp was thought to show the Statue of Liberty in New York

The image was taken from a stock photography service, the New York Times reported.

Designed by French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and French engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the statue - entitled Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World - was given to the US by the French and dedicated in 1886.

An Oldie, but Goody ........

A man was dining alone in a fancy restaurant and there was a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table..He had been checking her out since he sat down, but lacked the nerve to talk with her.

Suddenly she sneezed, and her glass eye came flying out of its socket towards the man. He reflexively reached out, grabbed it out of the air, and handed it back.

'Oh my, I am so sorry,' the woman said, as she popped her eye back in place. 'Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you.'

They enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they went to the theatre followed by drinks... They talked, they laughed, she shared her deepest dreams and he shared his. She listened to him with interest.

After paying for everything, she asked him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful, wonderful time.

The next morning, she cooked a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy was amazed. Everything had been so incredible!

'You know,' he said, 'you are the perfect woman.. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?'

'No,' she replies. .. .....

She said .... ...:

'You just happened to catch my eye.'

Marathons, Once Special, Are Now Crowded

by Asma Khalid

The Boston Marathon requires participants to qualify in order to enter — a barrier that once kept the nation's oldest and most elite marathon from filling up. But this year, spots in the race were gone in just over 8 hours.
     So, what has changed?
Across the country, a record number of Americans are running marathons. And that popularity is actually a bit of a pain for the sport.
Legend has it that the Greek messenger Pheidippides ran 26.2 miles from Marathon to Athens — and then collapsed and died. That was the original marathon. But what was once an act of rare heroism is now sort of common.
At 25, Rachel Couchenour is training for her first marathon — the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, Tenn.
"I only started running a little over a year ago," she says. "I couldn't even run for, like, 5 minutes straight."
After a sorority sister was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Couchenour decided to join the charity running group Team in Training. The organization raises money for leukemia and lymphoma research.
On a recent day, Couchenour is running 20 miles — the longest distance she'll run before the marathon itself.
"I feel like the last six will be mainly mental," she says. "I'm like, what's another hour of running after this? Can't be too bad, right?"
Explosive Growth In Running Marathons
The belief that anyone can run a marathon is a mantra in running circles. And it seems that almost everyone is.
Last year, more than a half-million Americans ran marathons — an all-time record. And that's partly because of groups like Team in Training.
"These training programs are the pipeline for this growth," says Ryan Lamppa of the research group Running USA.
"They can take that new runner from unfit to finish a marathon in 3 to 6 months," he says. "They opened up the sport to mainstream America."
Couchenour knows that firsthand. As she crosses the chalk finish line on her training run, she is rewarded with purple Mardi Gras beads and chicken nuggets.
"There's no way I could have ever done this on my own," she says. "I wouldn't know about fueling myself during runs, I wouldn't know about any of that, or pacing. I feel like I would have just been going out blind."
And without that help, Couchenour says, she probably would not make it to the finish line.
In addition to the record number of runners these days, there are a record number of marathon races — more than 625 last year alone.
Take the Country Music Marathon Couchenour is running. The race features live local bands at every mile, and themed water stations.
And as more novices like Couchenour start running, "They are drawn to go out and see how fast they can go," says Tom Grilk, who heads the Boston Athletic Association. The group hosts the annual Boston Marathon.
"Then, people get more excited about how fast they're going, and that's when you see them start aiming to qualify for Boston, as a kind of badge of accomplishment within the sport."
Boston is the pinnacle of all marathons.
Ben Beach is running his 44th consecutive Boston Marathon. When he first started running Boston, no women ran in the race. He says he was one of perhaps 1,000 runners — all men. Now, more than 40 percent of the marathon's participants are women.
Beach says he thinks the current marathon mania is healthy — a sign that more people are thinking about fitness.
And while the folks who host the Boston Marathon are also happy that more people are running, they worry that as mainstream American joins the race, amateurs will dilute Boston's prestige — especially if the fastest runners are locked out because they miss the sign-up.
So, new rules are on the way: Starting next year, the folks with the fastest times can sign up first. That means not everyone who technically qualifies for Boston will get to run. There are just too many marathon runners.

Words to Ponder

Forget the oft used analogies of the "Stupid Party" and "Evil Party." While the Republicans may still be stupid and the Democrats evil, it is increasingly clear that the Republicans are a bunch of wimps.

In the past week, Democrats have said the Republicans want women to die and old people to starve. They've accused the GOP of hurting kids. Barack Obama himself has entered the fray. He says the GOP would turn the nation into a third world state. He says the Republicans want to hurt the elderly with their Medicare reforms. Never mind that he is the champion of death panels.

All the while, the Republicans keep talking about wanting to reach across the aisle. They are perfectly willing to go along with the Democrats in raising the debt ceiling. They are perfectly willing to help the Democrats cut only $353 billion from this year's deficit. They are perfectly willing to let Obama keep lobbing bombs at Tripoli for no apparent reason.

The Republicans have gotten it in their head that if they just play nice and look leaderly, the nation will embrace them. Instead, the GOP is getting defined by the Democrats. They are getting pinned down by a media willing to push the Democrat talking points and their polling is correspondingly going down hill.

John Boehner and Mitch McConnell don't seem to understand that we need fighters not lovers right now. The Republican Party has turned into the Party of Wimps. If they don't start throwing punches soon, they'll be undone and so will the nation.

Tragedy and the Actions of a Brave little Boy

NEWBURGH, NY – La’Shaun Armstrong, 10, escaped drowning along with his three siblings and mother when she drove her minivan into the Hudson River off Newburgh Tuesday night by opening a window and swimming to safety.

Fire Chief Michael Vatter said a passerby helped the young boy.

“Approximately 10 minutes to eight [Tuesday] evening, a 10-year-old boy and a woman came to the firehouse to report a car in the water at the foot of Washington Street, it drove into the river off of the boat ramp,” he said. “We subsequently learned that the young man, who was soaking wet, was the La’Shaun Armstrong and was a passenger in the car and escaped after the car went into the water.”

Police Chief Michael Ferrara said had the child not freed himself and perished along with the rest of his family, they would have been listed as missing persons because of the murky water of the river masking any sign of the vehicle, he said.

The victims have been identified as LaShanda Armstrong, 25, and her children, Landen Pierre, 5, Lance Pierre, 2, and 11-month-old Lainaina Pierre. Jean Pierre, the father of the three children who perished, did not live with the rest of the family at 53 William Street. That home is across the street from 56 William Street where one-year-old Natali Vaquero Mendoza died in a fire on March 18.

Police were called to the residence at 7:45 p.m. by a family member reporting a possible verbal confrontation. When they got there, no one was home. The plunge into the river was reported shortly after 8 p.m.

British Museum Wants To Lift A Rare World War Two Era German Dornier 17 Bomber

Port of London Authority/ResonA British museum wants to raise for its collection a rare World War Two era German bomber that has been discovered on shifting seabed off the British coast.

The lost German Dornier 17 bomber was said to have sunk some 50ft to the bottom of the English Channel after being shot down during the Battle of Britain, Dailymail reported.

Reports said that the German Dornier 17 bomber was hidden for years by shifting sands at the bottom of the sea and believed to be the last known example of its kind. It was discovered last month by the help of high-tech sonar equipment undertaken by the Port of London Authority (PLA) vessel.

BBC obtained some records pertaining to the downed aircraft which was said to be Dornier 17 Z-2 with serial number 1160, of number 7 squadron, 3 Group, third Bomber Wing and was hit on August 26, 1940.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) museum at Hendon in London has launched an appeal to raise funds for the lifting operation of the Dornier 17 aircraft.

Donald Trump tops new 2012 poll

By Holly Bailey

A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll out today finds Trump tied with Mike Huckabee atop the field of potential GOP White House contenders. According to the poll, Trump and Huckabee both garner 19 percent support among likely GOP voters. Sarah Palin comes in second, with 12 percent, while Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are tied atthird, with 11 percent support each.

That's a significant drop for Romney, who was at 18 percent support in CNN's poll last month. The poll echoes the findings of a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll last week that found Trump bouncing into second place among likely contenders, tied with Huckabee.

All of this comes as Trump steps up his 2012 maneuvering, especially among social conservatives who seem unhappy with the current field of GOP contenders.

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The Soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass..

'Step forward now, Soldier ,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear..
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you Soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

Tuskegee Airmen: 'Rock Stars' Of American History

by Karen Grigsby Bates

Harry Stewart looks around the slowly filling ballroom in an Orlando, Fla., hotel and brightens.

"I haven't seen some of these guys in over 66 years," he says. "Some I haven't seen since I entered the service, and others since I left at the end of the war. This is very exciting."

Red Tail pilot Alexander Jefferson was shot down by the Germans in 1944 and was held as a prisoner of war. Before his trip home, he took a horrifying, last-minute side trip.
The war Stewart is referring to is World War II, when the Army was still segregated. Stewart is part of a reunion of Red Tail pilots, members of the 332nd Fighter Group. They're part of the Tuskegee Airmen, an organization composed of World War II fliers and the thousands of people on the ground who made their missions possible.

The event's organizer, Leo Gray, says he realized earlier this year that time was zipping by. One of their members, Lee Archer, considered to be the country's only World War II black ace pilot (his plane was emblazoned with five swastikas, one for each confirmed German plane downed), died last year.

Gray wanted to bring the remaining pilots together again. "Nothing official," he explained. "I wanted this to be social, to give the guys plenty of time to spend with each other, because you never know what's going to happen, or when somebody's going to go next."

It's a pretty safe guess that "next" may not be too far off: The youngest Red Tail pilot is 86, the oldest 96. Many are infirm and unable to travel. Others could only come with the assistance of younger family members. But about a dozen ended up drinking a little, laughing a lot and sharing war stories.

Comment from Frank Beckman of WJR Radio in Detroit

Just how did GOP win budget battle?
Failed to stop EPA from costing us $$
Cut spending by about 1/1,000th of budget
Continued public broadcasting funding
Allowed abortion funding everywhere except DC (whoopee, Planned Parenthood. can keep funding Dem campaigns)
And now they'll raise debt limit next, won't they?
That's "winning"?

Trash is on the way ..................

The Associated Press wrote about how scientists expect that over the next one to three years "wind and ocean currents eventually will push some of the massive debris from Japan's tsunami and earthquake onto the shores of the U.S. West Coast."

CNN said that "the Hawaiian islands may get a new and unwelcome addition in coming months — a giant new island of debris floating in from Japan." It relied in part on work done by the University of Hawaii's International Pacific Research Center, which predicts that:

"In three years, the [debris] plume will reach the U.S. West Coast, dumping debris on Californian beaches and the beaches of British Columbia, Alaska, and Baja California. The debris will then drift into the famous North Pacific Garbage Patch, where it will wander around and break into smaller and smaller pieces. In five years, Hawaii shores can expect to see another barrage of debris that is stronger and longer lastingthan the first one. Much of the debris leaving the North Pacific Garbage Patch ends up on Hawaii's reefs and beaches."

GOP - Budget

I've got to dig through details some more, but on surface, it sure looks like the GOP caved on budget.

Whistle-blower Gets $4.5 Million Award From IRS

by Mark Memmott
The Internal Revenue Service has awarded a Pennsylvania accountant $4.5 million because he blew the whistle on his own employer — an act that "netted the IRS $20 million in taxes and interest," The Associated Press reports.

According to the AP, "the accountant filed a complaint with the IRS in 2007, just as the IRS Whistleblower Office opened, but heard nothing for two years." So he hired a lawyer to help push the case. That lawyer, Eric Young of Blue Bell, Pa., declines to identify his client or the company he worked for.

The whistleblower felt that his company, a financial services firm, had ignored his warning that it had failed to pay some taxes.

One bit of irony: While he's been awarded $4.5 million, the check sent to the accountant by the IRS was actually for $3.24 million, AP says.

He had to pay taxes on it.

Oh, and here's a reminder: Even if the federal government shuts down tonight, the deadline for filing federal incomes tax returns this year is still April 18.

SEVEN Foods to Avoid

1. Canned Tomatoes

The problem: The resin linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A, a synthetic estrogen that has been linked to ailments ranging from reproductive problems to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Unfortunately, acidity (a prominent characteristic of tomatoes) causes BPA to leach into your food. Studies show that the BPA in most people's body exceeds the amount that suppresses sperm production or causes chromosomal damage to the eggs of animals. "You can get 50 mcg of BPA per liter out of a tomato can, and that's a level that is going to impact people, particularly the young," says vom Saal. "I won't go near canned tomatoes."

The solution: Choose tomatoes in glass bottles (which do not need resin linings), such as the brands Bionaturae and Coluccio. You can also get several types in Tetra Pak boxes, like Trader Joe's and Pomi.

2. Corn-Fed Beef
The problem: Cattle evolved to eat grass, not grains. But farmers today feed their animals corn and soybeans, which fatten up the animals faster for slaughter. But more money for cattle farmers (and lower prices at the grocery store) means a lot less nutrition for us. A recent comprehensive study conducted by the USDA and researchers from Clemson University found that compared with corn-fed beef, grass-fed beef is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3s, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium; lower in inflammatory omega-6s; and lower in saturated fats that have been linked to heart disease. "We need to respect the fact that cows are herbivores, and that does not mean feeding them corn and chicken manure," says Salatin.

The solution: Buy grass-fed beef, which can be found at specialty grocers, farmers' markets, and nationally at Whole Foods. It's usually labeled because it demands a premium, but if you don't see it, ask your butcher.

3. Microwave Popcorn
The problem: Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize—and migrate into your popcorn. "They stay in your body for years and accumulate there," says Naidenko, which is why researchers worry that levels in humans could approach the amounts causing cancers in laboratory animals. DuPont and other manufacturers have promised to phase out PFOA by 2015 under a voluntary EPA plan, but millions of bags of popcorn will be sold between now and then.

The solution: Pop natural kernels the old-fashioned way: in a skillet. For flavorings, you can add real butter or dried seasonings, such as dillweed, vegetable flakes, or soup mix.

Budget tip: Popping your own popcorn is dirt cheap.

4. Nonorganic Potatoes
The problem: Root vegetables absorb herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that wind up in soil. In the case of potatoes—the nation's most popular vegetable—they're treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they're dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting. "Try this experiment: Buy a conventional potato in a store, and try to get it to sprout. It won't," says Moyer, who is also farm director of the Rodale Institute (also owned by Rodale Inc., the publisher of Prevention). "I've talked with potato growers who say point-blank they would never eat the potatoes they sell. They have separate plots where they grow potatoes for themselves without all the chemicals."

The solution: Buy organic potatoes. Washing isn't good enough if you're trying to remove chemicals that have been absorbed into the flesh.

5. Farmed Salmon
The problem: Nature didn't intend for salmon to be crammed into pens and fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers. As a result, farmed salmon is lower in vitamin D and higher in contaminants, including carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT. According to Carpenter, the most contaminated fish come from Northern Europe, which can be found on American menus. "You could eat one of these salmon dinners every 5 months without increasing your risk of cancer," says Carpenter, whose 2004 fish contamination study got broad media attention. "It's that bad." Preliminary science has also linked DDT to diabetes and obesity, but some nutritionists believe the benefits of omega-3s outweigh the risks. There is also concern about the high level of antibiotics and pesticides used to treat these fish. When you eat farmed salmon, you get dosed with the same drugs and chemicals.

The solution: Switch to wild-caught Alaska salmon. If the package says fresh Atlantic, it's farmed. There are no commercial fisheries left for wild Atlantic salmon.

Budget tip: Canned salmon, almost exclusively from wild catch, can be found for as little as $3 a can.

6. Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones
The problem: Milk producers treat their dairy cattle with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST, as it is also known) to boost milk production. But rBGH also increases udder infections and even pus in the milk. It also leads to higher levels of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor in milk. In people, high levels of IGF-1 may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers. "When the government approved rBGH, it was thought that IGF-1 from milk would be broken down in the human digestive tract," says North. As it turns out, the casein in milk protects most of it, according to several independent studies. "There's not 100% proof that this is increasing cancer in humans," admits North. "However, it's banned in most industrialized countries."

The solution: Check labels for rBGH-free, rBST-free, produced without artificial hormones, or organic milk. These phrases indicate rBGH-free products.

Budget tip: Try Wal-Mart's Great Value label, which does not use rBGH.

7. Conventional Apples
The problem: If fall fruits held a "most doused in pesticides contest," apples would win. Why? They are individually grafted (descended from a single tree) so that each variety maintains its distinctive flavor. As such, apples don't develop resistance to pests and are sprayed frequently. The industry maintains that these residues are not harmful. But Kastel counters that it's just common sense to minimize exposure by avoiding the most doused produce, like apples. "Farm workers have higher rates of many cancers," he says. And increasing numbers of studies are starting to link a higher body burden of pesticides (from all sources) with Parkinson's disease.

The solution: Buy organic apples.

GOP-Controlled House Passes Stopgap Spending Bill

by NPR Staff and Wires

April 7, 2011 House Republicans passed a largely symbolic stopgap spending bill on Thursday, as congressional leaders met again with President Obama to try to hammer out a compromise that could keep the government from a partial shutdown.

The measure passed 247 to 181. But Senate Democrats and the White House have already rejected the temporary fix — which is conditioned on $12 billion in immediate spending cuts — saying they want a bill that funds the government through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

Moments after the vote, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) appeared at the White House following meetings with Obama.

"I did ask the president to sign the stopgap measure, and I expressed my disappointment when he suggested he would veto that measure," Boehner said.

Reid said he and Boehner would return to the White House at 7 p.m. for more talks.

Player was Masters trail-blazer

AUGUSTA, Georgia (AFP) – Gary Player owns a rightful place in golfing history as a trail-blazer in the sport, but there is one "first" he established at he Masters of which he is especially proud.

It was 50 years ago when the South African became the first non-US winner of the storied tournament, grabbing the top prize when a then-dominant Arnold Palmer let slip a two-shot lead with one hole to play.

He was to win again in 1974 and in 1978 and remained the only "international" winner of the Masters until Spain's Severiano Ballesteros triumphed in 1980 to herald two decades of European domination.

But it was Player's trio of wins that proved "an outsider" could win at what has become the quintessential US golf tournament.

"The memories are still lasting, everlasting; to be the first international player of this great event in this great country meant an awful lot to me, particularly being a young man and having aspirations of trying to win a Grand Slam. That was my dream," Player, now a sprightly 75, said.

Three GREATS that are still with us...

Plans For World's Most Powerful Rocket Unveiled

by Nell Greenfieldboyce

The private rocket company SpaceX says its next rocket will be the most powerful in the world.

The new rocket, called the Falcon Heavy, is designed to carry up to about twice as much weight as a NASA space shuttle can take to orbit. It's expected to be at the launchpad at the end of next year for its first flight, with the launch likely coming in 2013.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk described his company's new rocket during a press conference in Washington, D.C. He says it will be able to take about 117,000 pounds to orbit.

"So that is really, really humongous," says Musk. "It's more payload capability than any vehicle in history, apart from the Saturn V."

The Saturn V was NASA's moon rocket and was decommissioned after the Apollo program ended. Musk said the Falcon Heavy has about half the lifting capability of the Saturn V.

CURTAIN RODS --- PRICELESS

She spent the first day packing her belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases.

On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things.

On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining room table by candle-light, put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of spring-water.

When she had finished, she went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimp shells dipped in caviar into the hollow of the curtain rods.

She then cleaned up the kitchen and left...

When the husband returned with his new girlfriend, all was bliss for the first few days.

Then slowly, the house began to smell

They tried everything; cleaning, mopping and airing the place out.

Vents were checked for dead rodents and carpets were steam cleaned.

Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which they had to move out for a few days and in the end they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting. Nothing worked!

People stopped coming over to visit.

Repairmen refused to work in the house.

The maid quit.

Finally, they could not take the stench any longer and decided to move. A month later, even though they had cut their price in half, they could not find a buyer for their stinky house. Word got out and eventually even the local realtors refused to return their calls.

Finally, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place.

The ex-wife called the man and asked how things were going.

He told her the saga of the rotting house. She listened politely and said that she missed her old home terribly and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for getting the house.

Knowing his ex-wife had no idea how bad the smell was, he agreed on a price that was about 1/10th of what the house had been worth, but only if she were to sign the papers that very day.

She agreed and within the hour his lawyers delivered the paperwork.

A week later the man and his girlfriend stood smiling as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home........

And to spite the ex-wife, they even took the curtain rods.
