This to Gloria, who responded to my last blog.
I remember the night pretty vividly, and it was one of those experiences that was so sudden, and kept growing in intensity .... the play itself somewhat dimmed in importance, as Mr. Laughten continued with no prompting, and no glancing at the script that he held in his hand.
I think all of the attention of the audience was directed to his performance, and what he was accomplishing ..... on the spur of the moment. Our respect for him, grew with each word, and Power and Anderson, who I think were also in awe of him, became supporting players, and I think they knew it.
As you say, I witnessed a "once in a lifetime" performance.
