SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea launched seven ballistic missiles Saturday into waters off its east coast in a show of military firepower that defied U.N. resolutions and drew global expressions of condemnation and concern.

The salvo, confirmed by the South Korean government, also appeared to be a slap at the United States as Washington moves to enforce U.N. as well as its own sanctions against the isolated regime for its May 25 nuclear test.

The launches came on July 4, which is U.S. Independence Day. The display was similar to one that took place three years ago, also while Americans celebrated the Fourth of July during another period of tensions over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

The number of missiles was the same, though in 2006 North Korea also launched a long-range rocket that broke apart and fell into the ocean less than a minute after liftoff.

South Korea said Saturday's missiles likely flew more than 250 miles (400 kilometers), apparently landing in waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan.

South Korea and Japan both condemned the launches, with Tokyo calling them a "serious act of provocation." Britain and France issued similar statements.

Russia and China, both close to North Korea, expressed concern over an "escalation of tension in the region," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement after a meeting in Moscow.

In Washington, the White House had no immediate comment. But two senior officials in President Barack Obama's administration, speaking in advance of the launches, said any reaction was likely to be muted to avoid giving attention to Pyongyang or antagonize it. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

THE BRIDGE BUILDER

I first heard this, 1943 or '44, Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago. My brothers was going through a V-12 program to become an officer, and we went to the base church with him on a Sunday morning. Some may remember, Eddie Peabody was stationed there, and played his banjo. The Chaplain ended his sermon with this poem.

WIMBLEDON, England – Serena Williams fell to her knees on the grass, eyes closed, arms raised, and threw back her head.

After six years, it was her turn to hold up the Venus Rosewater Dish again.

In the fourth all-Williams final at Wimbledon, Serena beat her sister Venus 7-6 (3), 6-2 on Saturday for her third title and 11th Grand Slam championship.

she was kinde perturbed but his missus sed o alright john go ahead an go but dont forget yur hat

so john reeched down for his hat under the seat in the wire thing well he jes kept goin n died right there on the church floor

we will be a goin to his funral in a few days

I GIVE UP ...... HERE IT IS

I have had so many requests for DOO BE QUE sauce that I give up .... here is the recipe ..... when you use it though, call it DOOBEQUE sauce, that's all I ask.

This is the original recipe we used .... you break it down ...

ONE Number 10 can of HEINZ (IT WORKS THE BEST) Ketchup
There are 3 quarts in a #10 can .... 32 oz. to a quart

ONE bottle of LIQUID SMOKE
Usually 3.5 oz. There are a few brands on the shelves. I liked WRIGHT'S

ONE two pound pack of brown sugar ... either light or dark

You can break the portions down .... but try to keep in these proportions, they work best. You can just take HEINZ KETCHUP, add brown sugar, smoke to taste, and be done with it. But, the basic proportions work the best.

That is all there is to it. NO cooking, just put all these together and the sauce is ready to go. Put in frig, the longer it sits, the better it is.

There is none better, and nothing in here that people can't like.

When you use it, don't tell anyone what you used in it, or how long it took to make it, just sit back and listen to the compliments.

There are a number of restaurants, caterers, bars, using this now, and they never told .... simplicity .... but if you add ALL the ingredients in ketchup, etc., together, there are a lot of ingredients. YOU just need three things.

Remember, it is DOOBEQUE

My Experience with a Heart Attack .....

Three years ago, I didn't feel well, not sick, just didn't feel well. Finally went to our local emergency room, told them of some heart history. They did an EKG and some other tests, finally even had some XRays taken, 6 hours after I had arrived.When they wheeled me back to my emergency room, the Doctor came out and told me, "You're having a heart attack"! She seemed almost relieved, she was about to send me home.

No big pains, no passing out, no numbness, no shortness of breath .....

I ended up, two days later, having a triple bi-pass.

That is one reason I keep the Aspirins by my bed .... there don't have to be any symptoms of any magnitude, so, BE OF THE SAFE SIDE, and keep those Aspirins handy.

I forgot and did not take them during my heart attack, because I didn't think I was having one. So, be on the safe side.

About Heart Attacks

There are other symptoms of a heart attack besides the pain on the left arm.

One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and
lots of sweating, however these symptoms may also occur less frequently.

Note: There may be no pain in the chest during a heart attack.

The majority of people (about 60%) who had an heart attack during their sleep,
did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from
your deep sleep.

If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow
them with a bit of water.

Afterwards

- phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by
- say "heart attack!"
- say that you have taken 2 aspirins.
- take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their
arrival and...
~ do NOT lie down ~

A Cardiologist has stated that, if each person, after reading this blog,

PS A personal comment and recommendation...
I keep a small used "prescription" plastic bottle on my nightstand. I have two aspirins in it, and for a lid, a piece of foil which I can easily remove.

In the bottle are two aspirins, at the ready.

I always keep a bottle of water by my bed, with a loose cap. I can reach down by the side of the bed, in the dark, and know just where it is.

I wonder why?

WWI, in all the flicks, those bowl shaped helmets, the troops always wore their chin straps.

WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, they didn't use their chin straps.

Now, they not only use the chin strap, there is a special chin strap to make sure it is held on tight.

I wonder why the difference.

You may have heard of the new professional football league, the United Football League, which opens its inaugural season this October.

As of now, the UFL contains four teams and will play a six-game schedule. Remember Dennis Green, Jim Haslett, Jim Fassel, or Ted Cottrell? They are the new head coaches of UFL San Francisco, UFL Orlando, UFL Las Vegas, and UFL New York.

So now you may have a picture in your mind of what the UFL will be at first, seemingly a sort of developmental league for the NFL.

Memories of this weekend ...

We were fortunate to be in New York, July 4, 1976, and got involved in many of the festivities. It was a memorable visit.

We visited the Trade Center, never realizing, we saw the array of tall Ships, saw their parade, and all the events going on in New York for the occasion.

We saw the fireworks from the New Jersey side, all three launching sites, in an awesome display, never to be forgotten.

In '86, we did Hands Across America, on the Beacon Bridge in New York, another memorable day.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence ?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army

Another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants,

Nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown , Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

The Fourth of July ......

Going to be a BIG four day holiday for many, parades, fireworks, cookouts. Few will actually reflect on what the day actually means.

Many have sacrificed much, some died, so that we can celebrate this weekend.

In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.

But, unfortunately, we don't have time to reflect.

What would the "boys that started it all," think of this country today.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Helen Thomas and Chip Reid Challenge Obama Admin. On 'Controlled' Town Hall Meeting

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs and the Obama administration found the press corps slightly less friendly than they are used to yesterday, when NBC's Chip Reid asked why the questions for Wednesday’s town hall on healthcare were being selected beforehand.

Gibbs tried to dodge the issue, and asked for it to be asked after the town hall meeting in question, but then Helen Thomas became involved, saying, “We have never had that in the White House. I’m amazed that you people … call for openness and transparency.”

Reid and Thomas didn't let up for a second, especially Thomas.

Karl Rove opined on Fox News this morning that, to some extent, Gibbs had a point in saying that, since people are free to ask whatever questions they want, the president should be allowed to answer whichever questions he wants.

But Thomas didn't see it that way. After the press conference, she told CNS News that Obama's grip on the media is even greater than that of Richard Nixon.

"Nixon didn’t try to do that. They couldn’t control [the media]. They didn’t try that. What the hell do they think we are, puppets? They’re supposed to stay out of our business. They are our public servants. We pay them. I’m not saying there has never been managed news before, but this is carried to fare-thee-well - for the town halls, for the press conferences. It’s blatant. They don’t give a damn if you know it or not. They ought to be hanging their heads in shame

(COMMENT .... just answer the questions he wants to answer .... I DON'T THINK SO) My life would have avoided some pitfalls if I could have done that .......

One guy on TV the other night, lost 5 million, didn't say how much he had left. I did recognize a three thousand dollar suit he was wearing though, why interview him and not some poor schlump who really lost everything, and I am sure there were many.

I say let him out, start another scheme, and pay back some money to those in the first group .... etc ..... etc ......... etc.

His poor wife only got 2 million to live on. I wonder how they arrived at that amount, and then they took a photo of her riding a subway, I wonder who staged that, maybe her limo was in for a lube or something.

I wonder who the first guy he got money from. Wonder how many "celebs" and politicians he swindled, and how many "came to him" to please let me invest. My guess is they were the loudest.

Neat thing, not everyone is vocal about it, or want it known, that they were taken in by him ..... wonder how much he will make on his book? Should be good reading.

He could pay a lot of them off with the profits from that book, and even more on those who would pay him NOT to be mentioned in his book. The IRS would like to see his list, I betcha .....

Madoff for Treasury Secretary .......

A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation that pays returns to investors from their own money or money paid by subsequent investors rather than from any actual profit earned.

The Ponzi scheme usually offers returns that other investments cannot guarantee in order to entice new investors, in the form of short-term returns that are either abnormally high or unusually consistent.

The perpetuation of the returns that a Ponzi scheme advertises and pays requires an ever-increasing flow of money from investors in order to keep the scheme going.

The system is destined to collapse because the earnings, if any, are less than the payments. Usually, the scheme is interrupted by legal authorities before it collapses because a Ponzi scheme is suspected or because the promoter is selling unregistered securities.

As more investors become involved, the likelihood of the scheme coming to the attention of authorities increases.

I have re-read this a number of times. Is it not basically what our GOVERNMENT is doing?

Maybe we should put Madoff in as Secretary of the Treasury, or some similar position, at least an advisor, instead of in Prison.

NOW, through the internet, he can show thousands, maybe millions, how to do what he did.

Remember Captain Crunch? The phone company wishes they had hired him rather than send him to jail, cost them millions.

Ramifications?

A group of 20 New Haven firefighters won a major victory from the Supreme Court this morning in their reverse discrimination lawsuit against the city, which had originally been decided against them by Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

On a 5-4 vote, the court ruled with the firefighters, one Hispanic and 19 white firefighters (the Ricci of Ricci vs. DeStefano), who said they were denied promotions after passing the appropriate exam. The city of New Haven and Mayor John DeStefano threw out the test results because no minorities scored high enough for a promotion. That, the city expressed, would leave them open for discrimination lawsuits from black firefighters.

"There is no evidence -- let alone the required strong basis in evidence -- that the tests were flawed because they were not job-related or because other, equally valid and less discriminatory tests were available to the City," wrote Justice Anthony Kennedy in his majority decision. (PDF)

Sotomayor, President Obama's choice to replace the retiring Justice Souter, was part of a three-judge panel that rejected an appeal by the group of New Haven firefighters.

The court resolved the city's fear of litigation can not justify the refusal to apply the test, reports Scotusblog.com. The case is expected to have wide-ranging implications for employment law.

"Fear of litigation alone cannot justify an employer's reliance on race to the detriment of individuals who passed the examinations and qualified for promotions," Kennedy added.

Kennedy was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas.

In the dissenting opinion, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the white firefighters "understandably attract this court's sympathy. But they had no vested right to promotion. Nor have other persons received promotions in preference to them."

Justices Stephen Breyer, David Souter and John Paul Stevens signed onto Ginsburg's dissent, which she read aloud in court Monday.
