MAPLE VALLEY, Wash. -- A suspected car thief who was in the middle of breaking into a pickup truck was shot and killed by the truck's owner in Maple Valley early Tuesday morning, King County Sheriff's deputies said.

The 27-year-old thief, who family identified as Blake Moore, and his girlfriend were already driving a stolen Honda with stolen plates when they pulled up to a home in the 21800 block of SE 236th Place just after midnight, deputies said.

As the man then began breaking into a pickup truck, the truck's owner came out to walk his dog and confronted the thief, according to investigators. Guns were drawn, and several shots were fired.

The thief ducked behind the truck he was trying to steal, but was still struck several times and died at the scene, deputies said.

The truck owner's aunt hailed her nephew, who is a former Marine, as a hero for saving her life as the bullets began flying.

"He shoved me out of the way when the guy was going to shoot at us," said Kristen Hague. "Looked like (the thief) had a gun and pushed me out of the way and yelled 'gun!' and I don't think if he would have done that, I would be alive... I think he was defending me -- I totally see it."

She said her nephew was definitely justified in fatally wounding the thief.

"My life was in danger; my nephew's life was in danger, and he did the right thing even though it ended really bad and really sad," Hague said.

She said despite the thief's attempt to shoot them, she went to his side and did CPR until medics could arrive.

"There was a guy on the ground dying and it was instinct and...I just went in and started doing compression on his chests...until help got there," Hague said. "It was all I could do."

Detectives say they recovered at least two weapons from the scene -- a .45 caliber apparently used by the thief and a 9 millimeter from the man who shot the suspect.

His alleged accomplice was arrested and police say she had a felony warrant for burglary.

Meanwhile, police questioned the man who shot the thief, then released him.

Hague said she's not surprised he would come to her defense.

Did Capitol Police Overreact?

There is still a lot we don’t know. But when you look at more of the details you have to wonder if the capitol police had enough reason to shoot her. 

Taking a life should be the last resort. And we have to wonder if reason could have been shown by someone. 

Obviously her reactions were not justified, but wouldn’t a nonlethal reaction have been more appropriate? 

Most of these questions will sadly never be answered. What do you think? Should the capitol police have shown restraint?

History 101

I just watched that North Korean video of our country in flames. North Korea doesn't speak for much of the world, but it does reveal cracks in our armor, that we are respected throughout the world. I remember something a teacher taught me in high school, "An American never goes to a foreign country." I have never forgotten that.

I remember when I was in Mexico, I was surrounded by "foreigners," same thing in Japan and Korea. Driving in New York, I was surrounded by "out of state" license plates.

Disasters seem to bring the country together, I thought that "attitude" we exhibited during that time, would never leave. It didn't take long to dissipate. Most people, if asked for incidents in history that they remembered, they would all revolve around disasters of one type or another. Flags are abundant in areas when a soldiers body is returned home.

President's Day was celebrated locally by furniture sales and no mail delivery. Otherwise, it was just another day. George who, Abe who, no mention of the Cherry tree incident at all.

I remember one group of entertainers in Nevada, I think it was the Gaylords,  did a segment on that, and it is appropriate for the recent holiday.

There was once a country boy who hated using the outhouse because it was hot in the summer and freezing in the winter...plus it stank all the time. The outhouse was situated on the bank of a creek and the boy determined that one day he would push that outhouse into the creek.

So one day after a spring rain the creek was swollen so the little boy decided today was the day to push the outhouse into the creek. He got a large stick and started pushing. Finally, the outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away.

That night his dad told him they were going to the woodshed after supper. Knowing this meant a spanking, the little boy asked why. The dad replied, "Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today. It was you, wasn't it, son?"

The boy answered yes. Then he thought a moment and said, "Dad, I read in school today that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn't get into trouble because he told the truth."

The Dad replied, "Well, son, George Washington's father wasn't in that cherry tree."

Big bad Winter predicted

Last winter, big cities like New York and Philadelphia saved a lot of money because the Northeast had a snow drought. Not so this winter.

Yes, even while air conditioners are still running, meteorologists are beginning to focus on the long-term winter weather forecast. 

And, it looks as if the I-95-corridor cities from Washington to Boston will need to make sure the plows are gassed up and rock salt plentiful.

“I think the East Coast is going to have some battles with some big storms,” says Paul Pastelok, Accu-Weather’s lead long-term forecaster in State College, Pa.

However, Mr. Pastelok predicts the battles won’t start until January and then will extend into February. “November in the Northeast could be above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation, and December could be a transition month,” he says. “By January and February it’s going to get pretty cold.”

Biden Spends $1 Million Annually for Weekend Trips

Washington, D.C. — Last June, President Obama appointed Vice President Joe Biden to root out wasteful government spending. But behind the scenes, it’s a different matter.

Every Friday, Biden takes a helicopter designated as Marine Two from the vice president’s residence to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland and then hops on Air Force Two to fly back to his home in Delaware.

At the end of the weekend, he returns on Air Force Two, usually a Boeing C-32.

During warm weather, Biden regularly returns to Andrews on the airplane on Saturdays to play golf at the Air Force base with President Obama. After the golf game, he flies back to Delaware and returns to Washington on the plane on Sunday evening — all at taxpayer expense.

The cost of flying Air Force Two is $22,000 an hour, so each half-hour trip to or from Delaware costs about $10,000. Each golf game costs taxpayers $20,000. At that rate, the annual cost to taxpayers of Biden’s weekend trips is well over $1 million.

In addition, the Secret Service rents more than 20 condominiums in the Wilmington, Del. area for agents who must accompany Biden when he returns to his home state.

Biden’s press office had no immediate comment.

An undisclosed source today revealed that First Lady Michele Obama has invited Casey Anthony, recently released accused child killer, to "hide out" in the White House in Washington, D.C.


Mrs. Obama stated, "Barack and I are never there, so someone might as well get some use out of the old place. Who would think of looking for her there, and security precautions are certainly in place. If necessary, we have the armed forces of the United States to protect her. The same people who voted for Barry are the same ones who found her innocent, I am sure of that, people just don't make mistakes."

She told Casey that she could stay as long as she likes, or at least another year or so, or at least until the next election.

The Casey Anthony trial was a criminal trial held in Orlando, Florida from May 9 to July 5, 2011 in the state's Ninth Judicial Circuit Court. Casey was accused of killing her child, Caylee Marie Anthony.

After her early morning release, Casey was last seen driving away from the jail, and her destination was unknown.

It is now known that she was taken to a covert government airfield, hidden under Disney World, and flown by a "black ops" Airwolf helicopter to Washington, where the helicopter landed on the roof of the White House. Air traffic is so frequent at the White House that the helicopter landed unobserved.

The First Lady also revealed to Casey that her tattoo "Bella Vita" which means "beautiful life" in Italian, may become the theme of her husband's next campaign, and that once the hatred for her has settled, she may become a spokesperson for the Democratic Party. There was some talk that due to her notoriety, that she may become the Chairman of the Party.

She also stated that there were irregularities in her husbands past, much the same as with the question about who might be the father of her deceased child.

Michele indicated that Casey was welcome to stay as long as she liked, or until they were forced to leave. "We're not here much, we've actually remodeled the Oval Office to make living quarters for Casey, Barry is never there.

Major Problems being solved in Washington

For the last four years, Capitol restaurants used eco-friendly plates, cups and utensils — all part of former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's "Green the Capitol" campaign.

Republicans, who are now in charge of the House, have gone after the tableware — and maybe more.

You can get a good lunch for less than $10 in the cafeteria at the Capitol's Rayburn House Office Building. And you can recycle the plastic water bottles — for now.

But Democratic congressional staffers Devon Kerns and Emily Cardon are upset about using plastic foam plates and cups. They say the touch and feel is so '90s.

"It's gross to eat out of. When ... you're actually scraping your spoon across it and it pulls up Styrofoam, god only knows what you're eating," Cardon says.

And there's the environmental issue, they say — the plastic foam is not being recycled.

Republican Rep. Dan Lungren of California, the chairman of the House Administration Committee, is the one who dropped the biodegradables. He says the new products are higher quality than the biodegradable stuff — some of which fell apart.

"I mean, I got more complaints from members of Congress and staff — particularly staff — about forks that would bend, knives that wouldn't cut," he says. "And I got complaints about the cups — that you'd have to put two or three of them together so that you could hold it with a hot beverage."

Along with that, Lungren says, the old stuff cost more than the plastic and foam. It's fiscal responsibility, a statement of who's in charge now.

Oregon Democrat Earl Blumenauer worries this is just the first step toward dismantling the whole Green the Capitol program.

"You wonder what's next," he says. "Lead paint? Asbestos? I mean, there's lots of things that are less expensive as long as you don't care about health and other considerations."

Under the Pelosi plan, the Capitol has been phasing out incandescent light bulbs in favor of more energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs. A Republican bill has been introduced to repeal that mandate.

"It's silly, it's unfortunate and it's not where America is going," Blumenauer says.

Could Washable Utensils Be Next?

Paper, plastic or foam, Jarrett Torres has to lift it. He's a busboy who empties trash in the Rayburn cafeteria. He used to take green bags filled with trash to the recycling room. Now, they're black bags.

"You have to take this black garbage to the Dumpster," he says.

But he says it doesn't really matter: It's all garbage to him.

Of course, this is Congress and there could be compromise. A pilot study is scheduled to start next week in the Rayburn cafeteria to study the feasibility of washable, reusable utensils.

Republicans recycle an old idea: the foam plastic coffee cup - Polystyrene makes comeback in US Congress building after Republicans reverse green initiatives brought in by Democrats

A bit like the Republican party, they are white, seemingly indestructible and bad for the environment. But after an absence of four years, foam plastic coffee cups have made a comeback in the basement coffee shop of the United States Congress building after Republicans began reversing a series of in-house green initiatives undertaken by Democrats.

The about-turn was announced by a press aide to John Boehner, the speaker of the House of Representatives, who tweeted on Monday morning: "The new majority – plasticware is back".

Date Night ...... in Washington

The State of the Union address is a solemn affair. The president lays out his goals and accomplishments before a gathering of the powerful from across the government: Supreme Court justices, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and, of course, Congress.


It's serious business. But this year it's earned a new nickname from pundits and lawmakers alike: Date Night!

To show their commitment to bipartisanship, some senators and representatives have pledged to sit with a member of the other party while listening to the president's speech.

It may sound trivial, but to people who watch Congress like a sport, this will be riveting. It's like the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins hanging out for a post-game beer. Coke and Pepsi talking bottle tops. Mozart and Salieri comparing compositions.

Father of Our Country Boxed Away

Remember when a symbol representing the name of Jesus Christ had to be covered so that Comrade Obama could speak at Catholic Georgetown? Something similar happened yesterday during the MLK festivities. Via Free North Carolina:

The annual MLK observance at the state house in Columbia SC had an interesting twist this year. The event is held on the north side steps of the statehouse. Prominent at that location is a large bronze statue of George Washington. This year, the NAACP constructed a "box" to conceal the Father of His Country from view so that participants would not be offended by his presence.

It would be nice to think that MLK Day is all about striving toward a colorblind society. In reality, it is political correctness day, which means it represents the opposite. If the dream were about people being judged by the content of their character, would they blot out the one person in our national history whose character was beyond reproach?

The real dream appears to be to tear down America, and replace it with a race-based society in which the "victims" always get to be on top, regardless of merit, based on the color of their skin. Progress has been made. Is anyone clueless enough to think Barack Obama would be in office if both his parents had been white?

A GREAT Evening ...... Softball and Mathis

I hope some of you watched a GREAT game last night, I did, still have tears in my eyes. College Softball Women's Championship game, pure sports, pure emotions, dedication, athletic ability, and more emotions.

The winning pitcher's Dad came down out of the stands and hugged his victorious daugthter, tears, hugs and sobs, that brought tears to my eyes, then her Mom came down, it was great. Mom and Dad couldn't site together, too much for them.

Just think what the three of them had gone through, for all those years, all the practice, all the games, grade school, high school, college, probably traveling teams, all the hours, late meals, all leading up to this National Championship. All the emotion poured forth, from them all, and it was great to see.

Teary congratulations from the losing team, the Florida Gators, but congratulations, not storming off, like poor Labron did after the Cavalier loss. And he makes millions a year, win lose or draw, but he was hurt he lost. Not the Gators, they were sad, envious, but proud.

I've watched much of the tournament, lost some interest when Michigan lost, but, I love women's softball, sport in its purest form.

I had a major problem though, Johnny Mathis was on a PBS Special, so I had to swing back and forth. I missed some of John, but caught his medley of the ones from my days, back in the 50's, floods of memories came rushing back .... memories then softball.

A great evening, I hope some of you watched it with me .... if not, you REALLY missed out on some great STUFF .....
