I have mentioned that, perhaps, I was in a position, or could have had the opportunity, to sit on his porch, and talk with Orville Wright. It might have happened, but was not important at the time.
In the late 50's I went with a friend to meet L. Ron Hubbard, who was on the Seventh Floor of Harolds Club in Reno, meeting with some people, and giving a brief speech. I had read Dianetics, so I knew who he was, but then, he was just the guy who wrote the book. Someone said, "The crowd is thinning out, let's go over and talk with him." I didn't want to.
We attended a presentation one evening for Koscot, and Glenn Turner spoke, the couple that we went with, knew him, "Come on, let's go down and I will introduce you to him, we can chat a bit."
"Not now, let's head back to Newark."
On another occasion, my friend, Danny, who had a limo, in New York, was contracted to take a lady around to meetings in New York City, for the day. I opted not to go with him, I missed spending the day, possibly, with Debbie Reynolds.
Last, but not least, a few dealer friends of mind, and myself, had a night off. We decided to head to Lake Tahoe, go to the Cal Neva, to see Dean Martin who "might" be appearing there for his good friend. We partied a bit before we got there, hit a few other spots, and by the time we got there, well, I was feeling good, and getting short on money. To make a long story short, we roamed around, not taking reservations, room full, so Hoot saw the Maitre de's reservation book, erased a name and put in Dooley, party of four. Apparently, Frank saw him do it, joked with them a bit about it, and invited them in to his table in the lounge. I had gone out to gamble a little.
I shot craps, the boxman was an "old timer," he fit the part. I had a "shot" I had worked on for some time, could hold a "high" or a "low" side on one die. Got pretty good at it, Don Eammelli had shown me the shot. Anyway, and had enough to drink to be brave .... made some bets, tried the shot, it either worked some or I just got lucky, won a few hundred. But when I sevened out, on a six ace, I had held the six, the boxman beckoned me down to the end of the table. He looked at me and said, "Son, I don't know what you were doing to me, I know you were doing something, so we would rather you take your action someplace else."
I headed to the bar, Hoot saw me and said, "Hey Joe, come on in with us, Frank is buying us a drink."
"No, I'm gonna go to the lounge, I want to hear Trini Lopez, I like that hammer song." I did, Trini was singing his one and only song, "If I Had A Hammer," which he sang over and over, I thought, who, FRANK!" Too late, they joined me in the bar, after having their drink with Sinatra. I did go to the rest room later and stood next to Trini ..... but .... I could have had a drink with Frank.
That same weekend, Sam and Dorothy were there, as was Marilyn and Ted, and rumor had it that perhaps John, his brother might have secretly flown in, the Gaming Commission spotted Sam there and Frank ultimately lost his license, and rumor has it that Frank and Marilyn might still be there, doing a little haunting.

CHARISMA - That's all it takes

In a reflective mood this Monday Memorial Decoration Day morning. Beautiful day in Ohio, sitting outside on our porch, visiting with a few Robins and a couple of Doves that occasionally stop by. One Robin keeps taking worms under my car, hope she is not building a nest under my car.
For some reason I reflected back to an Oprah show I saw a few years ago. Her guest was a rising young politician and his wife. He spoke, I listened, he was impressive, as was his wife. I told my wife, "That is the next president of the United States."
What had he said or done that made me feel that way. Easy, he had ONE thing going for him that equalled and surpassed all other considerations. He had CHARISMA.
I am still impressed with his CHARISMA. All other logical thoughts and reasoning's have been veiled in me, because of his CHARISMA.
I am of the opinion that he is nothing more than an image, a charismatic image, with no real substance. We see him often, but I don't think we really see him, we see his image, we see his CHARISMA. I think that is all that he is.
I have personally met two people with CHARISMA. Glenn Turner of Koscot fame, and L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Dianetics and Scientology. Obama could have spearheaded either of the two organizations. I attended one of Turners appearances, and after listening to him, if asked, would have followed him anywhere. Same with Hubbard, scary. Their presence was almost hypnotic.
That has been Obama's contribution, his personality and his CHARISMA. What else has he done, God only knows, I am afraid it is monumental, and we may not be aware of it until it is too late. Is he good? You bet, he is the president and we are not completely sure if he is even qualified to do so, and most, don't care. Is he good, or what? He can attribute his success to one quality, CHARISMA, and someone, something controlling the strings on the puppet. Oh, the above foto is Hubbard in his younger days.

Phone Call
Recent telephone call ............. could be from a recent winner in a gubernatorial election in the Midwest. I actually got an Email from the governor elect who wanted my ideas and suggestions to get the state back on its feet. I sent him an Email,, "You said you had solutions, that's why I voted for you.' He also wanted a resume, for some reason, and, I think he would accept donations ........ I could picture him making the call below ..
Oh, hi, this is your new governor, or the governor elect, is your mommy home?
Ok, could I talk with her?
Hi, I'm the newly elected Governor of this state, and ah, well, I made a lot of promises and told everyone that I had solutions to our problems ... and ... ah ..... well, I got elected and I was wondering if you had any good ideas that I might use.
Ah, no, I am serious, I'm going down my list of contributors and your name was on the list. Oh, and ah thanks for that nice donation, it helped me get elected.
Have you lived in the state long?
Oh, great, then you must have some ideas.
Well, I know what I said, but, well, to be honest, I made a lot of statements and promises that were, well, said to get me elected, to be honest about it.
Frankly, I never thought I would win, but I did, and now I have to do something, and to be honest with you, I'm at a loss.
You, ah, really don't have any ideas or suggestions. Well, no, we can't send your money back.
Lady, I just thought you might have some good ideas that I could use.
Hey that's not nice.

3 - The Fateful Moment
The Fateful Moment
In that fateful moment, Jessie looked up in to the eyes of Walt, and some spark in her was kindled, it was a feeling, an emotion that she had never experienced. She was left breathless, as if some unseen hand had brushed across her face, she blushed, she knew something was going to change in her life, and she was both full of wonder, and somewhat dazed.
Jessie was aglow with emotion. She believed she had at last found a path in her life that she had been searching for. She was happy with Jim, but, there was something lacking in their relationship.
"I must find an excuse to meet Walt again," she said to herself. She had met him on one other occasion, at the Arcade, Jim had hastily introduced them, but they barely looked at each other, it was a brief encounter. Without further argument with herself she turned back toward the feed store, deep in thoughts of how she could arrange her meeting with Walt. She felt a strange attraction to him, as if she had known him for a long time, he was so familiar to her.
Walt skillfully backed his loaded truck toward the rear coal chute at the Arcade, as Jim was giving him hand signals to insure correct alignment so that he did not hit the rubber bumpers too hard. Jim had placed them carefully at the rear of the building. Jim knew that Walt was some sort of a scoundrel, but never let on, and was always extremely cordial to Walt on his tri weekly deliveries. But Jim was always guarded with him, never too open.
"A little more Walt, easy, that's good .... Go ahead and drop the load, Jim instructed. As the huge truck stopped, Walt swung the door open, and with a trained flourish, swung back up on the rear of the truck, and with the motor running, reached for the transverse drive lever, that operated the stuffing box, that operated the "dump box," as Walt called it.
Walt slipped, ever so slightly, but enough for his hand to slip off the lever, and the momentum of his weight forced his right hand and arm in to the cam nut bolt adjuster, which was the essential moving part of the transverse drive. In an instant, it pulled his arm in up to his shoulder. Jim instinctively moved in to action, pulled the lever to its neutral position, and cautiously went to Walt's aid.
"Walt, its in all the way up your shoulder, can you feel anything?"
"Jim, I can't feel anything, but I think I am getting weak ... I'm losing a lot of blood, I don't think I am going to make it. Is there someone we can call to get me to the hospital, Walt inquired?"
Jim shouted to Harold, "Quick, get on the Power Plant Phone, and call the hospital, they have to get someone over here right away ... NO, I think I can drive this rig, come with me, and we will take him directly to the hospital, I think it will be quicker."
Jim had observed Walt before, and had seen how deftly he moved through the gear sequence, and was confident that he too could drive the big rig.
Jim was finally able to back the truck out, head up Church Street, and make his way over to Hudson to the City Hospital. He came to an abrupt halt in front of the entrance marked Emergency, and had Harold go inside to find some help.
Shortly, three white uniformed orderly's came rushing out and jumped up on the big rig. They hurried to Walt, asked a few knowledgeable questions, and slowly helped Walt extract what was left of his arm. Walt slumped to the cold steel deck of the rig, and his lifeless body fell in a heap. One of the white uniformed orderlies shook his head after checking for a pulse.
"Its too late, he has expired, I think from a tremendous blood loss," the white uniformed orderly stated.
Later on, Jim called the trucking company and informed them of their loss, and told them the location of the now idle big rig, and then, he and Harold started the sad walk back to the Arcade.
There was a slight chill in the air, the temperature was dropping rather fast, so Jim knew he had to get back to the Arcade basement, and increase the coal consumption of his precious auger driven unit, that in turn would produce more heat for his beloved Arcade.
As Jim headed down the stairs, he looked up and saw Jessie standing there .. "I heard there was an accident and that you took someone to the City Hospital. Who was it Jim, she asked?"
“It was Walt, the big rig truck driver, remember, I introduced you to him on one occasion here. I realize it was a brief introduction, but I think you might remember him."
Jessie turned pale and slumped to the floor in a feint.
"That's strange," Jim thought to himself, "it was such a brief introduction, Hmmmm."

Glenn W. Turner..
Glenn W Turner was born in 1934 in South Carolina to an unwed mother. He was very poor. His mother’s prenatal illness of scarlet fever caused Glenn W Turner to be born with a clef palate and a hair lip. As an infant, he had surgery in an attempt to correct these problems. Even so, his disability was always noticeable but this was not to stop Glen W Turner from wanting to be great.
He dropped out of school in the 8th grade mainly because of the teasing about his hair lip by other children. When Glen W Turner was only 17 years old, he had his father sign for him so that he could join the Air Force. Unfortunately, he was given a medical discharge one year later because it was discovered that he had a perforated eardrum.
Upon exploring job opportunities, he was told that his outlook was bleak because he had no education. He was directed to and enrolled in an Opportunity School. This was a school for people who had dropped out of school or had never gone to school. This school saved his life. It gave him the inspiration to complete school and the first boost of confidence in his life.
Glenn eventually started selling sewing machines door to door. Because of his past experiences, Glenn Tuner didn’t have much confidence at first. However, he was fortunate to have the ability to learn about sales from his manager who became his mentor. This mentoring relationship helped Glenn to be very successful. Glenn never forgot the importance of having a good mentor.
He was soon introduced to a great company called Holiday Magic, an MLM cosmetic sales company. Glenn Turner would mortgage the family furniture to borrow $5000 to become a distributor. In a short time, Glenn surpassed fellow distributor, Zig Ziegler, and became the Number One distributor for Holiday Magic. In fact, he made a quarter of a million dollars just in his first eight months with Holiday Magic!
Glenn was transformed from having little confidence to having the confidence of a master speaker and entrepreneur. When Glenn was 26, he left Holiday Magic and began his own cosmetic MLM marketing company. It was called Koscot.
Glenn W Turner grew Koskot to a $100 million dollar powerhouse in just 36 short months. At the height of it’s growth, Koscot was larger than Amway.
Glenn developed a new company named Dare To Be Great because Koscot had a need for training materials and courses. Many Koscot salespeople left their distributorships and became involved with the Dare To Be Great program. People flocked to Dare To Be Great because they were fascinated with everyone’s positive attitude and success.
In fact, Glenn W Turner estimates that more than 800 people became millionaires through Koscot and Dare To Be Great.
MLM laws were non-existent when Glenn W Turner first started. But as the laws developed, Glenn Turner started being investigated for different kinds of illegal activities, including mail fraud. (Oddly, the new laws were written with the help of AMWAY attorneys)
He subsequently worked with one of his former employees in the development of a new MLM, Challenge America. The company was investigated and Glenn was eventually charged with “aiding and abetting a pyramid.” He spent almost five years in an Arizona prison.
Glenn’s great passion is teaching personal development and the importance of maintaining a positive attitude. He has written several books and estimates that he has sold seven million books and audio-tape programs in his career combined.
I heard Turner speak on one occasion, in Columbus, Ohio. The program consisted of some of his staff, successful franchisers and others. The talk was 100% MONEY and AMBITION ..... NEVER one word about the product ...... he was selling ..... OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE MONEY. The only visible connection with his Mink Oil Product, was the mink coat that his lovely secretary was wearing.
ALL speakers RAN from the back of the room to the front. You could feel the electricity in the air.
Glenn was late getting to the Columbus venue. SUPPOSEDLY he had a strict rule on his private plane, if you are late, fly commercial. HE WAS LATE and the plane took off without him.
As a result, all of the HIGH POWERED speakers had their opportunity, electrifcy the crowd, get them to a fevered pitch ..... then ..... THE KING ARRIVED with his entourage .... and the crowd went HYSTERICAL ..... wanting to shake his hand ..... or "just go up and touch him."
CHARISMA - HOPE - NEW IDEA - ENTHUSIASM - STAR APPEAL - OPPORTUNITY
Sound familiar, this was many years ago, we are seeing it today with OBAMA.
Think about it!

My meeting with GlennTurner
I forget the year, but we had a friend who was involved with Turner and Koscot. He got my attention when he mentioned he was almost embarrassed when he went to the mailbox, there was so much money there, for doing so little.
He was a high ranking government official at our local air force installation.
Glenn was coming to Columbus, Ohio, and he wanted us to go over with he and his wife, to listen to what he had to say. I was impressed with the money he was making, so we decided to go.
Southern Hotel, room was filling up, many men walking around in shimmering suits, that were popular then, everyone well dressed, nice crowd.
I noticed the podium was at the opposite end from the entrance, but didn't think anything about it.
The lights dimmed a little, the door slammed open, and some guy in a blue shimmering suit came running, full speed, from the door to the podium, jumped up on the podium, and enthusiastically welcomed all, high energy, electric atmosphere.
The scene was repeated a number of times during the night by various members of his staff, and some successful "dealers" who were making tons of money ........ all the talk was ..... MAKING MONEY, helping people under you to MAKE MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, INCOME, MONEY, MONEY, and OPPORTUNITY ...... the opportunity to show US how to make money.
One ran up so fast, could not stop in time and almost knocked the podium over, plus a few chairs and people, but he was still enthusiastic, limping, but enthusiastic.
They apologized about Glenn, he was late. He had a strict rule, be on time for the company airplane, or fly commercial. He had been late, his plane took off, and he had to fly commercial, so he was running late. This was before cell phones, text messaging, etc.
He finally arrived, ran from the back, same style of suit (later learned they had a tailor in Georgia, or somewhere, who made suits for everyone). As he was running to the front, the crowd got to their feet, yelled, applauded, jumped, it was like the Saviour was entering the room.
He went through his 3rd grade education, cleft palet (hair lip), war record, selling Japanese sewing machines, right after the war, to veterans of the war, or their parents. In one case he was knocked off the porch by a man whose son had been killed, by the Japanese.
I forget how many he was able to by, maybe 20 or so, and he sold all of them, 3rd grade education, cleft palet, and all, he sold his table top Japanese sewing machines.
After he sold all of them, he went back, and sold most of them a better machine, a floor type, took the others on trade, and then sold them. He was a true salesman.
I think he indicated that he had gone bankrupt, at that time, three times, "And each time I went to court in a Cadillac."
He was a charmer, hypnotic, you were drawn to every word he said. There was something magnetic about his personality, you believed what he said, you were somewhat mesmerized by his tone of voice. I almost think that at the end of his speech, if he had walked over to me and said, "Leave your wife and family and come with me to Florida,"I might have done it, he was that good.
During the evening, little to no talk of a product to sell, just the opportunity. I understand it was quite some time after he started his company that he even had a product to sell. He was just selling the opportunity ..... for pretty good bucks, and people were buying it.
Eventually he was selling tapes, "Dare to be great," I think it was.
I class Glenn with L. Ron Hubbard, Karish, probably Adolph Hitler, Manson, and some others who had that charisma, that blinded people, and they followed. I have to add Obama to that list also. I predicted four years ago that he would be our next president, based on his charisma, sometning few politicians have.
I was very impressed with Glenn Turner, salesman extraordinaire, empire builder and pyramid expert, not the ones in Egypt.
When it was over, the people we were with, wanted us to walk up front with them, meet Glenn, "just touch him." Scary.
