Not sure what made me think of it, but a few years ago, Ann Miller, dancer, who performed in many movies and I think on Broadway, was being interviewed by David Osborne of TCM fame. They were watching clips from some of her movies where she was dancing with all the big stars.
They were showing a few clips of her dancing with Fred Astaire, probably the greatest, and everyone was saying what a great dancer he was, and how they danced so well together.
Her comment.
Remember, when I did all those dance scenes with him, I had to do them all backcwards, and in high heel shoes!
She also commented that the scenes in the movie were done with soft shoes, so those shiney floors didin't get scuffed, and then later, in the screening room, they did the dance again, recording the sounds. A lot more work involved that one might think.
