The ALL STAR Game

I don't care what your politics are, it was a great opening ceremony. A well manicured field full of millionaires, but, to me, it was more about the opening ceremony.

Introduction of the teams then intro of the managers, then the starting players.

Then a gigantic flag, anchored by armed forces, unfurled in the outfield.

Then a film about unheard of people, who have decided to "do something," or "give something back," and briefly their stories. One lady knits and donates hats to people who are going through cancer therapy. Others did a variety of volunteer work.

And then, they came out on the playing field, in a group, and the players, converged on them to thank and congratulate them. It was neat. These were people who devote time, money and energy to doing things for others, and they do it because they want to, and they were being recognized for what they did. It was really neat.

Then more film, the President, and all his living predecessors, congratulating the players, and then they congratulated the group of caring people.

I admit, I had a few tears. Someone decided to thank a group of people who generally do what they do out of dedication and caring, and they were being recognized.

Then, Stan Musial, who I have seen play at old Crosley Field in Cincinnati, 80 some years old, came on to the field in a golf cart, and he was carrying a baseball.

ST. LOUIS — If the buildup to the 80th All-Star Game belonged to St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, Tuesday night's celebration belonged to America and Cardinals legend Stan Musial.
A sea of red and a deafening roar in appreciation greeted Musial, 88, who arrived via the right-field gate in a maroon golf cart.

But then, President Obama emerged from the dugout, went to the golf cart, and Mr. Musial gave the baseball to the President, resplendent in jeans and a Chicago White Sox jacket, and threw out the first pitch, to Albert Pujols.

It was a great opening ceremony, the National Anthem left a little to be desired, couldn't decide whether she was wearing shorts or a mini skirt. People just don't dress appropriately anymore, to suit my tastes. At least is wasn't Roseanne Barr.

Whoever put the show together is to be congratulated.

I got to wondering ..............

I got to wondering, the other day, how different my life would be, IF, I had waited 24 hours, and perhaps sought some advice, prior to making any MAJOR decisions.

I've made few RIGHT decisions, so I would have to go back 50 years, or more, to start contemplating that. In order for it to work, you would have to start at the beginning because everything after that would me altered.

My life would be entirely different now, but many lives would be affected, so I have to reason, that even ALL the mistakes, have led me to this place in life. Good or bad, I am old, have a resemblance of good health, a loving wife who has survived breast cancer, four children, all in good health and doing reasonably well. So I might have made better decisions, but the ones I have made, got me down the road to where I am today.

When I start looking back, one right after the other, bad decisions, or at least look bad now. My ADD has affected a lot of decisions, or prompted them.

I have had a tendency to make snap decisions, rather than reason things out, or seek advice ... but looking back still brings me to today, and today could be better, much better, if I had made more reasonable decisions, but in comparison to some, today ain't all bad.

Hindsight could have led to some better decision making, but we don't have the benefit of that, until its too late. My wrong decisions far outweigh my smart ones.

Wait 24 hours, seek advice or counsel, and then make your major decisions. Good advice from someone who never did.

The older I get ..............

The older I get, the harder it is ...... to MERGE.

I am doing better with driving, since my triple bi-pass of a few years ago, but I find that when I have to MERGE on to the freeway, it is getting more difficult.

MERGING takes very quick reflexes and decisions, and in my advanced age, this is getting tougher all the time.

I spend more time at 4-way stops, just to make sure that everyone understands what the other is going to do. If someone looks like they are in a hurry, I let them go first.

I think some people look in my car, see my white hair, know of my reluctance, and swoosh on.

I generally STOP before I MERGE, just to make sure there are no cars coming, and it is not as easy to turn my head ..... completely to the left as it used to be. I can only do about eighty degrees without turning my head, and I just don't trust rear view mirrors.

I have seen some "old timers" who do not worry about MERGING, they just go ahead with no worry or concern about what might be coming in their direction. They don't even seem concerned about all the tires screeching behind them, and they avoid all the dirty looks as cars pass them ..... eventually.

I take alternate routes so I don't have to MERGE. I prefer stop lights and STOP signs to merging. MERGING is for the young, not the old.

I may have a bumper sticker printed .....

The Tour de France ...... I think that's it

I never had a TV channel before, that I know of, where I could watch the TDF live, but it is an interesting sporting event to watch.

A long day of riding, and it comes down to an exciting finish.

The scenery is outstanding as they go through those little towns and the mountains. The route is lined with people, cars, campers. With so many people on those narrow roads and streets it amazes me that some bikers and spectators don't collide.

I don't really understand the race, different ones finish first, but the aren't necessarily winning the race, but, nevertheless, it is fun to watch.

I now would like to hit the lottery and take that same route, in a nice camper, and see all those sites.

The bikers and the cars and motorcycles seem to be in such close proximity to each other, maybe the camera causes that. One biker will be next to a car, loaded with bikes, riding at high speeds, taking water bottles, and loading them in a back vest. Seems like one little slip, and disaster.

I will be back watching in on Tuesday AM, early, I guess they give them a day off today.

I would need a lot more than that if I was in it ..........

BAR BE QUE SAUCE .... or Doo Be Que

I have had so many requests for DOO BE QUE sauce that I give up .... here is the recipe ..... when you use it though, call it DOOBEQUE sauce, that's all I ask.

This is the original recipe we used .... you break it down ...

ONE Number 10 can of HEINZ (IT WORKS THE BEST) Ketchup
There are 3 quarts in a #10 can .... 32 oz. to a quart

ONE bottle of LIQUID SMOKE
Usually 3.5 oz. There are a few brands on the shelves. I liked WRIGHT'S

ONE two pound pack of brown sugar ... either light or dark

You can break the portions down .... but try to keep in these proportions, they work best. You can just take HEINZ KETCHUP, add brown sugar, smoke to taste, and be done with it. But, the basic proportions work the best.

That is all there is to it. NO cooking, just put all these together and the sauce is ready to go. Put in frig, the longer it sits, the better it is.

There is none better, and nothing in here that people can't like.

When you use it, don't tell anyone what you used in it, or how long it took to make it, just sit back and listen to the compliments.

There are a number of restaurants, caterers, bars, using this now, and they never told .... simplicity .... but if you add ALL the ingredients in ketchup, etc., together, there are a lot of ingredients. YOU just need three things.

Remember, it is DOOBEQUE

My Experience with a Heart Attack .....AGAIN

I just didn't feel well, hadn't for a couple of days .... NO particular symptoms.

My wife was not home, she was working, so they called my son-in-law,, he came over, I casually got dressed, and off we went to the hospital.

Emergency room ..... some natural concern, EKG and a few other things, went back to my cubicle ..... for 6 hours ..... a few visits my Doctors and nurses, one seemingly concerned Doctor, a woman, seemed puzzled by my symptoms, or lack of them.

Finally ordered an XRay, wheeled down, moved to the left, then to the right, back on the bed, and a nurse started wheeling me back to my emergency cubicle.

The Doctor was waiting for me, I think I noticed a strange expression on her face, it is all rather blurred ..... "Oh, you're having a heart attack!"

Blood work had finally come back with that, whatever, showing.

Then it was a blurr .... vaguely remember something at our local hospital ...
remember an ambulance ride to Columbus, Ohio ...... I remember asking a surgeon if he had "done this before?" I think he said he had, many times, then coming to in a recovery room, after my triple bi-pass or by-pass, not sure which is right.

Then I remember I felt like going home, but they kept me an extra day for some reason, not sure what it was ...... I DO REMEMBER .................VIVIDLY

One morning, before leaving, the Doctor came to my bedside, we chatted about something, and then SSSSSWWWWWWOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSHHHHHHH ..... he pulled something out of my CHEST .... I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO SHOCKED IN MY LIFE .... something they would have attached something to ..... if necessary, but it wasn't.

I have never experienced anything like that in my life ..... and ..... if I had known what he was going to do ..... I probably would have killed him first. He knew how to do it .......... JUST DO IT .... before anyone can think about it.

It didn't hurt, just like someone pulling a garden hose out of your chest ....

"The ANTICIPATION is always worse than the event." Or, as Hitchcock said, "There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.

I was up and around quite soon, but in all honesty, it has taken me almost three years to get over ALL of it, and still not sure if I have. Many mental issues, emotional issues, things they don't tell you about.

AND, AND, I had preached about ASPIRIN ..... and did not take any .... till the end of it all, coming back from the XRAY department, first thing the Doctor did, have me CHEW TWO ASPIRIN ...................

ASPIRIN BY THE BEDSIDE ...... UPDATE

I thought I would update my BLOG with this additional information. I will try to get an difinitive answer ..... if there is one .... I do like the "chew" and "call 911"

Taking one or two aspirin immediately if you suspect a heart attack IS standard medical advice. Calling a friend or neighbor IS NOT. Call 911 and then follow the instructions.

A lot of people don't want to call 911, maybe because they're in denial about how serious it might be, they don't want the neighbors gawking, they don't want the bill, they think it's not serious enough and don't want to tie up an ambulance for "someone who might really need it" - the reasoning goes, "by the time the ambulance gets here and loads me up, I could already be ten minutes closer to the hospital in my car." But you won't have a defibrillator, you won't have trained paraprofessionals, you won't have access to oxygen, and you won't be able to call the emergency room and tell them to prep a cardiac/MI suite and get the on-call cardiologist into the department.

Don't let the aspirin dissolve - chew it. The idea is to get it into your system as quickly as possible. When it's not in pressed tablet form, it enters the bloodstream more quickly, but the time it would take to dissolve in the mouth would defeat the purpose. (If, like me, the idea of chewing aspirin makes you gag, you could crush it before swallowing.)

And do tell the dispatcher and the EMTs that you took aspirin, and how many. The SOP is to administer aspirin to anyone with a suspected MI, but aspirin is a blood thinner, and if you wind up needing to have surgery, too much of an anticoagulation effect can cause excessive bleeding.

The part about the aspirin could help save lives; the part about calling a friend or neighbor could endanger lives.

The Would in Highland, New York

On a recent trip back East, we discovered some great "out of the way" spots. One such was a place with the strange name of "The Would." We laughed when we first heard of it ........... Who Would ............ We Would ......... that sort of thing, but we drove to this lovely spot, had a delicious dinner, and wanted to learn more about the place.

Originally part of the summer resort, Hotel Di Prima, opened its doors in 1926. The Would Restaurant has a long history of warm hospitality. The Hotel Di Prima catered to Italian families from the New York City area. In the 1940s and 1950s, thousands of vacationing families came to relax and savor the rich summer flavors of “the country.”

In 1994, Claire Winslow and Debra Dooley purchased the establishment and became partners in this famous Hudson Valley retreat. With renovations underway they changed the name of the resort to the Inn At Applewood, and the restaurant to The Would.

Many guests say that "the old resort atmosphere relaxes you and takes you back to slower days." On summer evenings guests enjoy dining on the porch, while watching the boccie players. In the winter they dine by a crackling fire with white linen table cloths, candlelight and fresh flowers.

What more can I say. We roamed around the grounds after dinner for quite a while, it is, in a beautiful setting, and the owners have kept much of the nostalgia which I am sure has been there since back in the 20's.

It really was a walk down "memory lane."

If you are in the area, or near, I suggest you try it out. You will find the ambiance relaxing, and you will almost be transported to an earlier, slower time, when graciousness was king. The food is excellent, they have an award winning wine cellar, all of the appointments are elegant, spotlessly clean, yet a truely warm and friendly atmosphere.

The Would knows how to do it right ..... Highly recommended.

News of the Week ....

Michael Jackson has a type of funeral.
I don't understand how such a close knit family, with such close friends, didn't notice the intravenous bag hanging by his bed, or all the needle marks. So much for the close family and friends we have heard so much about. They seem to be closer now, concerned about the estate, some JUICY information about his children, and who their father really is, and maybe, just maybe, someone will have to answer for his death.

Billy Mays, Jr., that was a real tragedy. He was just starting to live the good life, was helping people realize their dreams, loved his family, he was the Pitchman's Pitchman, he was excellent at what he did.

Obama's kids seem to enjoy flying on AIR FORCE ONE, seems like they just fly everywhere since the election. I wonder how many days he has actually spent in the Oval Office. I hear he has a writer following him, and someday, a book will be published, similar to the Bible. Well, actually it will be called The Bible, Barack Version. Hey, it's easy to save the world when you have a jet to fly all over, unlimited usage.

OH, yes, the North Koreans fired missiles, and they don't like us.

There was an interview on TV, not sure who she was, apparently a North Korean. People in North Korea were not aware of the death of Michael Jackson ... actually, people in North Korea were not aware of Michael Jackson, or much of anything. All those millions of people just do what they are told.

Some things happened in Washington also, that were overlooked because of the Jackson coverage. I was surprised that Obama did not show up at the Jackson Memorial. If only he could have been there great exposure. Where was Oprah? Surprised she wasn't there.

I guess I was wrong ..............

It must have been me, I was too old, I didn't know that Michael Jackson was the star of the magnitude that he actually was.

I watched the memorial service today, I cried some, I was never a big fan, I admired his moon walk, some of his songs were OK, but, I didn't realize the magnitude of his charisma. He touched many lives.

I didn't really know him, I just saw the outer image of him.

I think Brook Shields opened my eyes .... he was a person, who genuinely had a purpose on this earth. I can think of no one, who could have pulled together, the world, today, as his passing did.

I only hope that we don't forget. I remember Princess Di, her death, a feeling that she had somehow brought the world trogether, didn't last long.

Any appearance on this earth, by anyone, who, even for an instant, can pull the world together, and hold the collective hands of the world together, is deserving of something.

Michael Jackson did that.

I guess I didn't look deep enough.

Thoughts of a Madison, in Oklahoma

It is sad, but American Independence -once the light of the World- has now become the subject of Presidential apologies to Nations with very evil thoughts toward Independence.

Teddy Roosevelt's "big Stick" has become a broken twig as the world laughs and taunts us and threatens our sovereignty while our President is having his prompters fixed for more good words without foundation, simply golden tones wafting on the breeze of Socialism. They sure sound pretty, but the results have been the falling of prestige in the World, extreme unemployment, the sharp rise in the cost of living and a Federal budget that cannot be comprehended by any but a very small segment of society - Passed by a group who did not see any reason to read what they were passing.

I have noted before that the first to feel the folly of electing a Socialist to the Presidency would, of course, be the lower segment of society. The class war is lost before Obama can declare it. If you charge the "rich" more in taxes, they simply raise the cost of their product so the rest pay it for them.

'For every federal dollar that is jerked from the State, county or town, there is a raise in the local tax to cover it - by the worker . Note the mysterious rise in the cost of gas. Most is taxes -hidden taxes, but taxes just the same.

Our Independence is certainly being taken away, or it is being changed to Independence granted by the White House, but it is not lost due to ANY war, Not WWI,WWII, Korea, Viet Nam or the War on terror and the middle East, It is being taken by the very people elected to protect it.

I quit watching it a few times, would flip over to other channels, but always went back, and glad I did. Got to see the final shot ......

Don't have to watch much tennis anymore ..... there will never be one like that.

A M E R I C A - A M E R I C A

Over the past few days, many 4th accolades have been directed, and deservedly so, at our armed forces.

The 4th of July celebrates our Declaration of Independence, the forming of AMERICA. In 1776, those men got together, in secret, and decided to declare their INDEPENDENCE from England. They wanted to be FREE and rule their own country.

I think we forget, at times, the actual reason for the day. It is not to thank the armed forces, that is done on another day, and should be done every day, but on the 4th we should thank those "signerS" for having the forethought to form this country. I don't think we say AMERICA enough. We have lost what AMERICA really is.

The 4th of July is a celebration of our INDEPENDENCE, nothing more. We should sing songs that attest to that, and songs with AMERICA in them.

I think we have lost sight of AMERICA and what they intended.

Last night, the 4th, a few TV stations had patriotic themes, but always geared at thanking our service men and women, but many more stations were about the life and death of Michael Jackson.

Something out of balance there.

I am more concerned about AMERICA, keeping alive what was started in 1776. Many kids today have little awareness of the Declaration of Independence, but they can recite all the words to songs, and know details of the lives of celebs of the day.

I think we should all think more about AMERICA, every day, and keep reminding those in government about AMERICA, before we no longer exist, as our forefathers intended.

And, we should do it before it is too late.

Sunday Morning Reflections

Fireworks from New York last night were awesome, Macy's' Parade at Thanksgiving and fireworks on the 4th. Retailing must be up if they can afford a display like that. Maybe the got some stimulus money.

I always admired McNair, he seemed to be a "professional" athlete. Just did his job as best he could, with no fanfare. Murder, suicide, wife and kids elsewhere. Not hard to figure. I think they said he had multiple wounds, she had one.

Michael Jackson .... as many, or more, people want to see his funeral, as wanted to see his shows. At least he has money, now. He is selling more records now, than when he was alive. I'm sure the family will see to that, all coming in, and with him gone, not as much going out. I have a hunch they will find ways to spend it.

Elvis is still making money. Seems like something is wrong when your memory can make more money than you can, with no expenses. A Babe Ruth autographed ball can be worth more that he made, salary, a year.

You had to be a very elite "star" of some kind to have that reaction. Most people just die, and that's the end. Only a few "live on."

Amazing, in a way, our society, pays more, in some cases, for something old, than for something new. Just look at the Antiques Roadshow. I sit there enthrall led at some of the values put on things. The antique car auction from Phoenix, and now Florida .... an old car ... worth a million or more. What is it that adds that wealth to an object.

A car, is basically used for transportation. I remember years ago, Charles Kettering, who invented the "electric starter" for cars, and had many patents and a lot of money.
