J.P. McCARTHY

Joseph Priestley McCarthy, I listened to him on the radio whenever I was in earshot of his station. I could get WJR down here in Ohio then, not so much any more, unless in the car. He was so many things, about Michigan, to me, regattas, Michigan sports, events all over Michigan. He did a whole week prior to the Ohio State game, personalities from both teams visited with him.
J. P. McCarthy was the morning voice of WJR/Detroit for over thirty years. McCarthy’s show was heard in 38 states and was rated number one in Detroit each year he was on the air.

J. P. McCarthy was born on March 22, 1936, in New York City. During his early years in radio, he gained experience at KFAR/Fairbanks and WTAC/Flint, before joining WJR/ Detroit as a staff announcer in 1956 and eventually “morning man” in 1958.

Except for a few years at KGO/San Francisco, McCarthy made WJR his on-air home for the rest of his career. For a number of years, he did both the morning and evening drive-time shows, then settled into the morning slot, as well as a noon-time show.

McCarthy’s unique blend of news, information, sports, entertainment, and interviews made him a legend in Detroit. Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer once attributed McCarthy’s success to making people feel at ease and genuinely caring about what they had to say.

In addition to his on-air excellence, McCarthy was also a civic leader and a significant supporter of local charities.

J. P. McCarthy died on August 16, 1995.

J. P. McCarthy was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1992, the first local broadcaster to be inducted.

Frank Beckmann ....Interesting State of the Union address last night.

I must admit I did not watch or listen to the "show" last night. I had seen enough BS for the week, after watching the Grammy s.  I already am aware of the "State of the Union, we are in a mess. We are still arrogant enough to consider ourselves the "leaders of the world." Do we have problems, you bet. Do we acknowledge them? NO. We just keep muddling along thinking it will all go away. One FACT to consider. United States Marines who marched in the Inaugural Parade had to remove the bolts from their rifles, which rendered them harmless and useless. They all took an oath to "defend" their country, and yet, what they would "defend" with, was rendered useless. That renders a powerful message about the leadership of this country, think about it. Below is a Facebook entry this morning from Frank Beckmann from WJR in Detroit.

President Obama said government can't do everything and then proceeded to outline a plan for them to do just that, proposing increased reach into our schools, college loans, manufacturing, 3-D printing ('Wow, that's cool -- let's build 15 of those printing centers'), mortgages, climate change of course (carbon pollution?

Like the CO2 he expellled with each breath?), the selection of careers for students, spending on infrastructure and education in other countries, bridge building, tax hikes, and a big increase in the minimum wage (why just $9?

If raising it is a good idea, let's go right to $25 or $30 dollars an hour!!).

Hooray for bringing troops home from Afghanistan.

Does spending our way to prosperity work?

More tax increases on the wealthy? (What's the upper limit of that?).

A war on seniors -- really?

And when did we cut our deficit by $2.5 trillion, before or after we scuttled entitlement reform and raised the number of people on food stamps?

The Frank Beckmann Show

The liberal world is exploding with calls for gun control in the wake of the Kasandra Perkins/Jovan Belcher tragedy.

Guns didn't cause the murder/suicide, Belcher's behavior did.

To blame guns for crime is to blame cars for auto wrecks or water for drownings.

We've got a world where the sanctity of life has been discarded by the acceptance of abortion (it kills over a million babies per year), a society which ignores personal responsibility, and a continued collapse of the 2 parent household under which children are best raised.

Reinstate respect for life and family, restore the expectation of personal responsibility, and you'll see a reduction in the kind of events like those in KC which horrified us!

Comment from Frank Beckman of WJR Detroit

President Obama, his administration, and party, support Egyptians who have killed over 100 people in their demand for political change.

So why do these same people demean those who engage in peaceful political opposition here in the U.S.? ...... Frank Beckman

A very perceptive comment, good for discussion and contemplation and ..........CONCERN

WHY do we give Egypt a BILLION DOLLARS a year?????????? Aid FOR WHAT??????

WHY is Hillary in Haiti and WHY are we rebuilding their country when we have A NEED FOR AID in this country?

We USED TO BE a World Power, we could afford to help others ..... WE are a second or third rate country now ............ we need their help................

WE are still those arrogant Americans, we think we are a SUPER POWER  ............. HOW can we be a SUPER POWER when we are partially owned by China and are in debt up to our eyeballs with so much INTERNAL political strife?????????? WE actually have NO money that we could send to any country as AID ..... HOW do we do that anyway, just print up more?????????

The Frank Beckmann Show

Monday is a big day for the Pro Life movement with a big march in DC....

We'll have one of the movement's biggest supporters, former Senator Rick Santorum, on the show Monday....

I notice the President issued a statement saying government shouldn't interfere with private family decisions...

Wish he'd apply that to the cars we drive, food we eat, and insurance we buy!
