LAS VEGAS (AP) — Federal authorities have lodged two criminal charges against a Phoenix woman accused of throwing a shoe at Hillary Rodham Clinton while she gave a convention speech at a Las Vegas Strip resort.

Alison Michelle Ernst, 36, didn't respond to a phone message Monday about the charges of trespassing and violence against a person in a restricted building, which were filed Sunday in U.S. District Court in Las Vegas.

She could face up to a year in federal prison on each charge if she's convicted. A court date wasn't immediately set, and it wasn't clear if Ernst had a lawyer.

Las Vegas police booked Ernst last week on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge and freed her with a June 24 court date. Charges haven't been filed in that case.

A disorderly conduct conviction could get Ernst up to six months in county jail.

Ernst immediately surrendered and was arrested after the incident Thursday in a ballroom at the Mandalay Bay resort.

The federal charges accuse her of bypassing security to enter the ballroom and committing a violent act by throwing the shoe that police say she pulled from a purse and hurled about 60 feet toward the former secretary of state.

Clinton expressed surprise but wasn't struck by the shoe. She made a couple of jokes and continued her speech before more than 1,000 people at a recycling industry conference.

An orange-and-black athletic shoe was recovered from the stage.

Ernst acknowledged throwing a shoe but didn't explain her actions to reporters as she was taken into custody by the U.S. Secret Service.

The incident reminded some of an Iraqi journalist throwing shoes at former President George W. Bush during a Baghdad news conference in December 2008. Shoe-throwing is considered an insult in Arab cultures.

Clinton has Secret Service protection because former presidents and their spouses are covered for their lifetime, said Brian Spellacy, head of the U.S. Secret Service office in Las Vegas.

Clinton, the former first lady and Democratic senator from New York, has been giving paid speeches to industry organizations and Democratic Party groups around the country. She has said she's considering a presidential bid.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is hitting the paid speechmaking circuit, drawing huge crowds of conventioneers from groups like the American Society of Travel Agents and the National Association of Realtors.

She is joining what has turned into a lucrative branch of the Clinton family business: Bill Clinton earned $13.4 million from speeches in 2011, according to financial disclosure reports, and has collected more than $100 million in speaking fees since leaving the White House. He brings in as much as $700,000 for a single address, an amount he collected after he appeared before a company in Lagos, Nigeria.

The events are also giving Mrs. Clinton large captive crowds as she considers a run for president in 2016. She often indulges her inner policy wonk, along with the softer family chitchat, according to several people who have attended her speeches this summer.

Last month, about 17,000 people lined up just after dawn outside McCormick Place, a convention center in Chicago, where Mrs. Clinton, in prepared remarks, talked about health care changes, as well as border security and immigration. “I hope it’s heading to a new law that will resolve a lot of these issues,” she told the crowd. “It’s way overdue.”

The fainting, the concussion, all for nothing

Republican senators will refuse to confirm Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., as Secretary of State until the nation’s current top diplomat, Hillary Clinton, testifies about her handling of the Benghazi terrorist attack.

“The Senate is expected to take up Kerry’s nomination in early January, but multiple Republican senators have already said they won’t agree to a vote on Kerry’s nomination until Clinton testifies about the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi,” The Cable’s Josh Rogin notes.

Clinton backed out of testifying at a congressional hearing last week after fainting and suffering a concussion. She was the first cabinet-level official to acknowledge that terrorists played a role in the assault on the U.S. mission in Benghazi.

She has been nominated for the best "Nice Try"  award of the year. Bill Clinton, her husband, stated, "Hillary has never faked anything."

Hillary Clinton Close to Paying Off 2008 Campaign Debt

Hillary Clinton, who has steadily chipped away at the more than $25 million in debt her campaign amassed during her run for president, owes only $100,000, according to Federal Election Commission disclosures for the second quarter of 2012.

Running for president is expensive, and although the subject of campaign debt has usually been synonymous with Newt Gingrich in the past several months, Clinton is among the many former presidential candidates who've departed the trail in debt.

She suspended her campaign in June 2008 owing the $25 million but had paid off enough by the end of that year to owe $5.9 million.

Almost four years later, the campaign owes $100,000 to one entity, the firm of Penn, Schoen & Berland for consulting and polling fees. Penn, Schoen & Berland is a market research firm headed up by a trio of longtime advisers to both Bill and Hillary Clinton: Mark Penn, Doug Schoen and Michael Berland.

Protesters threw tomatoes and shoes at Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's motorcade on Sunday during her first visit to Egypt since the election of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi. A tomato struck an Egyptian official in the face, and shoes and a water bottle landed near the armored cars carrying Clinton's delegation in the port city of Alexandria.


A senior state department official said that neither Clinton nor her vehicle, which were around the corner from the incident, were struck by any of the projectiles. Protesters chanted: "Monica, Monica", a reference to Former President Bill Clinton's extra-marital affair. Some chanted: "leave, Clinton", Egyptian security officials said. 


It was not clear who the protesters were or what political affiliations they had. Protesters outside Clinton's hotel on Saturday night chanted anti-Islamist slogans, accusing the United States of backing the Muslim Brotherhood's rise to power. The assault on her motorcade came on a day Clinton spoke at the newly re-opened US consulate in Alexandria, addressing accusations the United States, which had long supported former President Hosni Mubarak, of backing one faction or another in Egypt following his ouster last year.

Bill Clinton ‘laying the groundwork’ for Hillary by ‘undermining Obama’

Former Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader told The Daily Caller that former President Bill Clinton is “undermining (President Barack) Obama” to lay the “groundwork” for Hillary Clinton’s presidential run in 2016.

Clinton recently told CNN that Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s business record at Bain Capital is “sterling.” TheDC asked Nader if he agreed with Clinton’s statement.

“He’s laying down the groundwork for Hillary Clinton running for president in 2016. Everything she is doing and everything he is doing argues that they want to run Hillary Clinton for president in 2016, so while he might appear with Obama in fundraisers in New York and elsewhere, he’s basically undermining Obama,” Nader told TheDC on Capitol Hill after advocating for raising the minimum wage to $10 per hour.

Will Hillary Clinton challenge Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination?

She says no, that she never wants to run for office again. But the pressure is growing on her to change her mind as Obama continues to slide in the polls — and as the left bloc of the party and Latino and black voters become more vocal in their disapproval of the president.

And when White House spokesman Jay Carney was asked about the possibility at a press briefing on Monday, he was less than convincing with his answer.

“You’d have to ask her,” Carney stammered after Lester Kinsolving of World Net Daily posed the question. “We’re fairly confident that we need to focus on the task at hand.”

More than 1 in 4 Democrats — 27 percent — say they want someone other than Obama to run next year according to a CNN/ORC International poll. And while Obama’s job satisfaction figures have been running at 39 percent, the latest figure for the secretary of state, albeit from March, put her with a job approval rating of 66 percent.

Talk of a Clinton run started when independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said last month that Obama needed a challenge because he has drifted too far to the right.

“There are millions of Americans who are deeply disappointed in the president, who believe that with regard to Social Security and other things, he said one thing as a candidate and is doing something very much else as a president — who cannot believe how weak he has been for whatever reason in negotiating with Republicans,” Sanders said.
