Harry James

Harry James performed in Reno in the late 50's, and occasionally ate at the Primm on breaks. He occasionally stopped by the table I was working on and we said hello and chatted briefly. He occasionally bought a Keno ticket and we compared "numbers." I am not sure where he was appearing, either at Harrahs or the Riverside.

I never saw him perform in person, saw him in movies many times. I grew up listening to his music. His band has probably played most of the towns, of any size, anywhere in the country.

In 1983, James was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer, but he continued to work, playing his last professional job on June 26, 1983, in Los Angeles, California, just nine days before his death in Las Vegas, Nevada. The job had become his final performance with the Harry James Orchestra. He died exactly 40 years after his marriage to Betty Grable (July 5, 1943), who was buried exactly 30 years after that date (July 5, 1973). Frank Sinatra gave the eulogy at the Bunkers Eden Vale Memorial Park in Las Vegas.
