Cheers and celebratory fireworks punctuated massive anti-Morsi protests nationwide just after the announcement by General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in an address to the nation.
The development came just after an advisor to Morsi said a military coup was underway, with tanks on the move outside Cairo, communication with the president cut off and some Muslim Brotherhood leaders arrested.
But many of Morsi's opponents, overjoyed at his ouster, called the military's move not a coup but an enactment of the will of the people.
Millions have stormed the streets in the past few days, just after the one-year anniversary of Morsi's presidency.
Morsi's opponents have accused the erstwhile president of hijacking their revolution to push his own political agenda, NBC News' Richard Engel reported from Tahrir Square in Cairo, the epicenter of the protests.
