Carley was concerned, she had not heard from Harry for three days, she knew that something must be wrong. Harry was never one to not stay in touch, he always checked in with amazing regularity.
She finished her second cup of coffee and was debating within herself if she should take on the appealing looking bear claw pastry that she had purchased at the bakery on the corner. It looked appealing, but once she started in on it she knew she would finish it.
Her dilemma, she had a luncheon engagement with Bosworth Cornell, the Director of the local Welfare Agency and she always looked forward to these meetings because Bosworth was interested in her suggestions and often put her ideas in to workable programs at the Agency.
On one occasion, she had done some research on her own, and found that there were a number of homeless people living under the bridge on third avenue, and she suggested that the Agency rent or buy the Garfol Car Company building that was located farther down on Third Avenue, and the agency purchase some staple food items to have on hand to give to those less fortunate who were living in that area.
Bosworth followed her suggestion, and applied for and received some "seed" money from a local philanthropic organization and purchased the old building and after some extensive refurbishing, they opened what was the first Food Pantry in town. They were surprised at some who applied for food assistance, some were members of families that on the surface were not in need.
At lunch, after some introductory greetings, Carley mentioned that she had not heard from Harry and wondered if Bosworth had any information about him.
"I've been worried about him recently, he seemed preoccupied, he just was not himself, he would not tell me what was bothering him, but I knew there was something. I am afraid, well, I am concerned about his health, I think there is something wrong," Bosworth stated.
Carley's complexion turned ashen, her expression changed to one of concern. "I, well, I, ah, Bosworth, I need a phone, I don't know why or what, but I have to make a call."
A motion and a gesture prompted their waiter to bring them a house phone.
"Who are you going to call?" Bosworth asked.
"Operator, get me the Mount Charleston Hospital in San Francisco, pause, yes, may I have the room of Harry Benson ...... Harry, Carley, what are you doing in the hospital, why didn't you tell anyone. I don't know, something told me to call you here, I can't explain it, I just knew."
Harry returned to town that evening, and the first thing he did was to stop by Carley's house. He related to her that he was concerned about some health issues he was experiencing, so, not to alarm anyone, he had made the decision to have some tests performed to determine if his concerns were warranted or not. He passed all the tests, his health was excellent. His life could go on.
Carley often talks about the incident, ESP, guardian angel, something alarmed her, and something told her to make the call and where to make it, and to whom. She married Harry, and to this day, they often share ... thoughts, without a word being spoken.
