The scaffolding, which had been outside his hotel, proceeded to cut Walpole’s throat causing him to fall helplessly to the ground. Marilyn began to scream as her husband continued to bleed out onto the pavement.
Malkovich, who was smoking a cigarette across the street, saw the accident and immediately came to Walpole’s rescue.
“He started to press on my neck,” Walpole recalls, “He was trying to stop the bleeding.”
While Malkovich was trying to block any more blood from escaping Walpole’s body, Ben Quinn, a Toronto native, had been walking by when he saw the scene and quickly ran over to help. As did Chris Mathias, a hotel doorman, who saw the scene and immediately called 911.
Quinn noticed Malkovich’s calm composure and said, “The guy really seemed to know what he was doing. We didn’t know who he was. I just asked if I could hold the man’s head, and he said ‘yes.’”
Walpole asked for his hero’s name to which Malkovich responded, “My name is John and you are going to be alright.”
When asked about the incident, Malkovich humbly told CTV, “Any citizen would do the same, it’s nothing special.”
