Chicago .... only in Chicago
I have been doing some looking in to the strike in Chicago. Below are some comments I found on a comment site. None of these are my commentary, only comments I copied.
"Chicago teachers make $76,000.00 per year."
"Plus, only work about 8 months out of the year and have gold-plated perks, free health care and pension plan no similarly situated private sector employee receives."
"Here is another tidbit, 40% of the teachers send their own kids to PRIVATE SCHOOLS."
"They are one of the top paid teachers groups in the nation yet they have one of the shortest school day and have the least amount of days per year."
"Honestly, I don't understand how a group of collage educated people like teachers need an outside organization, a union, to speak for them. I had worked at a company years ago which had an employees union after about two years a bid came up on the day shift, I bid on the position, I had been working a night shift at the time, and was awarded the position, the union fought my being given the position claiming there were men with more seniority who had bid for the position. The company fought the union and I was given the position on my ability to do the job over the seniority of others who had bid on it. I found out early in life that I didn't need any one else to do my talking for me and that the union was a hindrance to my working hard for a promotion. The union was good at protecting the jobs of the slackers, those that were habitually late and the drinkers. These, I found, were the ones who gladly payed weekly union dues so as to protect their weekly paycheck. When I left that position, I never worked for a company with a union again and did quite well for myself right up until the time I retired."

Arizona Gov. Signs Law Permitting Bible Classes in Public Schools
Gov. Jan Brewer has signed legislation requiring the state Board of Education to design a curriculum for schools to teach if they choose. Rep. Terri Proud, a Tucson Republican who sponsored the legislation, says a class like this is needed because references to the Bible are found everywhere.
Public schools across the country have generally avoided Bible courses, but hundreds now offer such classes as electives. At least five other states have passed legislation similar to the Arizona proposal.

Deal Reached to Eliminate Rubber Rooms by Fall
A deal has been reached to eliminate rubber rooms before the fall school semester begins, a source familiar with the negotiations tells NBC New York.
The source said the deal is expected to be outlined at an announcement this morning.
The longtime practice, which essentially pays teachers accused of misconduct to do nothing and costs taxpayers $30 million annual, has been under scrutiny for years. Some critics think the concept is absurd, but a new documentary, "The Rubber Room," from filmmakers Justin Cegnar and Jeremy Garrett, is stone-cold serious about the subject.
"To me the thing that's most shocking," says Cegnar, "is how long people can spend there. You can spend five years or ten years-- a decade in the rubber room at full salary."
The rooms are officially known as reassignment centers. And New York City's Department of Education has said there's a reasonable explanation. If a teacher is accused of yelling at a student, or throwing a chair, or incompetence, he or she is innocent until proven guilty. But in the meantime, parents wouldn't exactly want those instructors to continue supervising their kids. So, while the investigation takes place...teachers are assigned to the rubber rooms.
"We need to balance our obligation to safeguard children with our legal obligation for fairness to teachers," a Department of Ed spokeswoman told nbcnewyork.com.
But the bigger problem is many teachers don't know why they're sitting in the rubber rooms, co-producer Garrett said.
"Some teachers have been there for three years without having been given a reason for knowing why they're there."
Garrett acknowledges he was a substitute teacher in the Bronx until he snuck a camera into one of the rubber rooms. He was arrested for trespassing and fired. He's hoping his new job-- as a moviemaker-- makes more people aware of the rubber rooms.
The movie has upcoming screenings at NYU and Harvard. In the meantime, the Department of Education and United Federation of
Teachers are blaming each other for the controversial centers. The city says the union has refused to cooperate with certain cases, bogging down the system. The union counters the Department of Ed has refused to hire more investigators, which would speed up the process.
I don't think that it is mentioned that the teacher draws full pay and benefits while sitting there, pension plan and everything. Is that a great plan, or what? I don't want to think why they call it a "rubber room."

Hey kids, it's Obama time ......
The President's speech to the school children, controversial to say the least.
Locally, a number of schools have decided not to air the speech.
Columbus Schools, make it mandatory. I wonder, the Columbus schools superintendent is a black woman. Wonder if that has anything to do with it?
Past President's have addressed schools, I don't know if they raised this much controversy or not. I was out of school and didn't even know they addressed the children, so I cannot comment.
A slight majority of the country voted Obama in, now, they don't want him talking with their children, interesting. Is it a drop in his popularity, or a realization of what his agenda might actually be.
This comes on the heels of a seeping out of information, that non-Obama-supporter car dealers, during the recent "house cleaning," were the first to go. When they starting closing down car dealers across the country, I thought it was for economic reasons, now, we find out it was for retaliation. One of the reasons so many dealers were closed, not many of them were Obama supporters.
I am concerned that the present administrations focus is on "retaliation," and getting rid of "non-believers," rather than the more important world crisis situations that we are confronted with.
I think there are some issues concerning this country that are more important than one mans image.
Our country is being over run. As a white male U.S. American citizen, I am now a minority. Our economy is running amok. When an athlete is worth fifty million dollars, to play a game, and a school teachers has to work two jobs to survive, something is wrong.
We are spinning out of control.
So why, really, is it so controversial, when the President of the United States, wants to chat with our school children? I wonder what his purpose really is?????
Someone, somewhere, knows something that I don't.
