Ralph Dean Dooley, M.D.

This is my Father, Ralph Dean Dooley, M.D. 1899-1978, he was a physician in the days when he was more, a Doctor, a Minister, a  Friend, an Adviser and concerned and active in his community. He listened to Walter Winchell, H. V. Kaltenborn,  Peter Grant from WLW in Cincinnati, spending many hours in front of the old Philco Radio. He was raised on a farm in Indiana, served in WWI even though he was too young, tried to serve in WWII but was too old and did as much as he could for the war effort. He always fired a small canon that he made on his lathe, on the Fourth of July, and every time he saw an American Flag, he put his had over his heart. He was as honest and hard working as they come. In this foto is a replica of a blacksmith shop from his childhood that he made. He carved the animated figures and my Mom dressed them. He loved wood working and spent many happy hours in his workshop.

His early years he was a GP, in General Practice, he made house calls, and had regular office hours, afternoon and evening. He never went to bed until the last patient was seen and treated. I spent many hours in  the old DeSoto or the Packard Clipper, riding with him when he made house calls or did his "rounds" at  Miami Valley hospital. He was dedicated to his patients and many of them became family friends. 

In the late 50's, at the end of his term as President of the Montgomery County Medical Society, I attended his farewell  banquet, and remember well his admonishment of physicians, and cautioned them on "abusing" their own insurance programs, and predicting what he felt was the future of "Medicine." So far, all of his predictions have become reality. He made the comment, prior to his death, that he was proud that he had been a physician, but not proud of what the profession had degenerated to. He felt that "some" physicians no longer practice medicine but practice deceit.

I wonder how he would feel today.

Russian town poses questions as flood recedes

KRYMSK, Russia | Sun Jul 8, 2012 3:36pm EDT (Reuters) - It seemed there was nothing but water in the early hours of Saturday when residents say a seven-meter wave came crashing down on the Russian Black Sea town of Krymsk, flooding a neat row of new brick houses where families lay sleeping.

In the hours that followed, the streets of Krymsk turned into raging torrents that swept along debris and drowned animals, and floodwaters filled some homes to the ceiling in this town of 57,000. At least 139 people have been killed in the deluge in Krymsk. Most of the dead were elderly people, caught unawares as they slept and drowned along with pets and livestock.

Now, as the survivors face up to the damage following torrential rain that began on Friday night, there is almost no water to be had and the city also remains without power and gas nearly two days after the flood.
"It's not so bad without power, which can be restored," said Zarzam Asatryan, who came to his neighborhood of Krymsk to help his brother salvage what was left of his home after the flood. "Without water we can't even clean up." Cars stood parked along the street with their doors wide open and their seats next to them on the ground, removed by their owners to let the soaked upholstery dry out.

"We were lying there asleep when the water came out of nowhere at 2 a.m., and right away it was knee-deep," said Berezhnoi, a cement factory worker who turned 35 on Sunday. "We barely managed to pull the children out. The dogs drowned. All our documents were lost - the car registration, work records, my army draft card. Everything was washed away - the furniture, the appliances. And the house is destroyed."

There's nothing opt-in about this change, and there was no notification about it either: Facebook just decided to swap out emails to try to get people to use their cobwebbed email system.

Mega-lawsuit says NFL hid brain injury links

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A concussion-related lawsuit bringing together scores of cases has been filed in federal court, accusing the NFL of hiding information that linked football-related head trauma to permanent brain injuries.

Lawyers for former players say more than 80 pending lawsuits are consolidated in the "master complaint" filed Thursday in Philadelphia.

Plaintiffs hope to hold the NFL responsible for the care of players suffering from dementia, Alzheimer's disease and other neurological conditions. Other former players remain asymptomatic, but worry about the future and want medical monitoring.

The league did not immediately respond to news that the single, mega-lawsuit would be filed but has denied similar accusations in the past.

The suit accuses the NFL of "mythologizing" and glorifying violence through the media, including its NFL Films division.
