Indianapolis woman sues police after being stopped over bumper sticker

(Reuters) - An Indianapolis woman has sued the city's police department, contending that an order to remove an "Unmarked Police Car" bumper sticker from her minivan violated her rights to free speech, the group representing her said on Monday.

A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana on Friday argued that Indianapolis police did not have the right to question and make demands of Pamela Konchinsky after pulling over her vehicle earlier this month.

"We contend that the police officers who detained and interrogated our client without legal grounds to do so violated her constitutional rights," ACLU attorney Kelly Eskew said in a statement. "The promise of our Constitution is that these lines cannot be crossed."

According to the complaint, Indianapolis police officers told Konchinsky the bumper sticker would make people think she was impersonating a police officer and could get her shot, before demanding that she remove it from her rear window.

The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Lieutenant Chris Bailey said the department did not comment on pending litigation.

Caroline Wozniacki joins the growing push for shot clocks in tennis

On Monday at Wimbledon, Caroline Wozniacki fell toBarbora Zahlavova Strycova in her fourth round match, meaning this is her tenth straight exit at a Grand Slam before making the quarterfinals.

But Wozniacki wasn't just chatting about her play after the match, but about the time between points that her opponent was taking.

Wozniacki mentioned that the 20-second rule between points is being routinely abused, and that shot clocks might be the next thing to come to tennisif things don't change.

''I thought she was very slow,'' Wozniacki said. ''But I guess the referee, she has the time on it. If she's within the time, I guess it's OK.''

''I wouldn't mind,'' Wozniacki said. ''You have a clock. It shows exactly how much time you take in between points.''

The rules on time is something that is abused in just about every match you watch, and it's something that the stars in the sport seem to abuse more than anyone. Lukas Rosol, who lost toRafael Nadal after taking the first set off him in their second round match, said he thought that Nadal took way too much time between points and that he doesn't get as much pressure to speed up because of his position in the game.

"I think all the players should have the same time between the points. But always the best players, they're taking much more than the normal players, and nobody is telling them nothing. I don't know why," Rosol said.

The one big name on the men's side that tends to agree with this is Roger Federer. The 17-time Grand Slam champion mentioned last week that he thought a shot clock might be smart considering that regular tour events allow 25 seconds between points, an eternity in a world that continues to want things quicker and faster.

"What you're going to see next is all of a sudden a shot clock," Federer said. "We discussed that as well. We said we didn't need to go that far. I wouldn't be surprised if that were to happen all of a sudden. Because you only just need a couple of guys always doing it, and that's when it happens."

Would a shot clock work? I believe so. While it probably won't look like our edited picture above, why not allow umpires, fans and players alike to see exactly the time between points, and get people going? Just like pitchers in baseball, the time between points and plays seem to elongate the more stressful the moment, but that isn't exactly fair to the player waiting on the other end of the net.

If tennis really wants to address one of its biggest issues, putting in a shot clock between points wouldn't be the wildest of ideas, and might actually work if the penalties are actually enforced.

U.S. sending 300 more troops to Iraq

The U.S. is sending another 300 troops to Iraq to beef up security at the U.S. Embassy and elsewhere in the Baghdad area to protect U.S. citizens and property, officials said Monday.

That raises the total U.S. troop presence in Iraq to approximately 750, the Pentagon said.

The State Department, meanwhile, announced that it was temporarily moving an unspecified "small number" of embassy staff in Baghdad to U.S. consulates in the northern city of Irbil and the southern city of Basra. This is in addition to some embassy staff moved out of Baghdad earlier this month,

Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the Baghdad embassy "will be fully equipped to carry out" its mission.

The White House announced that President Barack Obama had directed that 200 troops be sent to reinforce security at the embassy, its support facilities and Baghdad International Airport.

The Pentagon said the 200 arrived Sunday and Monday.

"The presence of these additional forces will help enable the embassy to continue its critical diplomatic mission and work with Iraq on challenges they are facing as they confront Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant," the Pentagon's press secretary, Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby, said in a written statement.

Suarez apologizes for biting opponent at World Cup

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — After a few days of reflection, Luis Suarez acknowledged what millions saw on TV — he did bite an opponent during a game at the World Cup. In addition, he said he's sorry about it, and promised it will never happen again.

Ending a unified protest in Uruguay by everyone from Suarez to teammates, fans and even the country's president that the star striker had done nothing wrong, the Liverpool player on Monday offered an apology to Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini.

"I deeply regret what occurred," Suarez said in a statement posted on Twitter. "I apologize to Giorgio Chiellini and the entire football family. ... I vow to the public that there will never again be another incident like (this)."

The Uruguay striker was banned for four months from all football by FIFA for biting the shoulder of Chiellini during the team's 1-0 win over Italy in their group-stage game in Brazil. The incident was not spotted by the referee, and the Uruguayans' victory sent them through to the second round while Italy was eliminated. It is the third time Suarez has been banned for biting an opponent, after similar incidents at both Ajax in the Dutch league and Liverpool in the English Premier League.

Chiellini responded on Twitter shortly after Suarez posted his statement, accepting the apology.

"It's all forgotten," the Italian wrote in English. "I hope FIFA will reduce your suspension."

Obama is trampling on authority of Congress

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee charged Sunday that President Obama is “trampling upon” the constitutional authority granted to Congress, as he defended Speaker John Boehner’s decision to file a lawsuit against the president for allegedly exceeding his authority.

“This is all about the United States Constitution,” Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., told “Fox News Sunday.”

Goodlatte rejected Democratic criticism that the lawsuit announced by Boehner amounts to an election-year political stunt. He cited a presidential pattern of “not enforcing laws, or changing laws that have been passed, taking power from the Legislative Branch.”

This, he said, runs afoul of Article 1 of the Constitution which grants legislative powers to Congress.

A few more comments .... of my own .....

I have never cared for Serena Williams. Venus, I liked, something about a smug, ego inflated Serena, just could not care for.

Her conduct and attitude on the courts was just too arrogant for me. And, I hated to see sisters play in the finals, with Dad sitting in the stands, waiting to collect the checks and invest in their various companies.

She was ..... a great athlete, I do not see how she maintains that number one ranking.

And then, to put the blame of losing, on her opponents, because they played better ..... against her ..... is the height of arrogance. "If she played her regular game, she could not beat me, I am number one." "They all play ..... above themselves when they play me."

She is unable to face the facts, she is not as competitive as she used to be .... some are able to compete with her .... even on a higher level. She will win again, I just hope, graciously ..... because, that she is not.

Because with her 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of No. 25 seed Alizé Cornet of France in the third round at Wimbledon Saturday, that makes her three-for-three in Grand Slams – this season.

A fourth-round loss to Ana Ivanovic in Australia, a second-round shocker against Garbiñe Muguruza in Paris, and now a third-round loss to Cornet after a long day of waiting out the rain at Wimbledon.

When she first came into the interview room, it appeared old Serena might show up – downcast eyes, halfhearted shrugs, non-answers and three-word sentences.

Her first answer: "I don’t know. I tried and it just didn’t work out." Shrug. Awkward silence.

But as it went along, it was clear Williams did want to hash it out a little, because she was truly at a loss to explain the loss.

"In Australia, I just couldn’t play. In Paris, I played really bad. Here, I thought I played better. I came into the tournament in better form. I thought I was doing pretty decent," she said. "I think I’m going to have to watch this film to see what I can do better, and see what went wrong."

Several times during the press conference Williams brought up the notion that every one of her opponents completely plays above her level, plays the match of their life against her.

Against her. Not against anyone else. Just against her.


"The changes I need to make are mostly within, just try to see why I’m making some errors. But it’s difficult; if I’m not playing a great, great match these girls play me as though they’re on the ATP Tour, and they play other girls completely different," she said. "It’s not easy to be in my shoes, but you’ve got to be ready."

Williams said it's always been that way, in her opinion. But for whatever reason, it seems to be getting to her now. Maybe it's that she's getting older – the nerves under pressure can be the first vulnerability. Maybe it's because she's so far ahead of the rest of the field in the rankings that there's not that urgency.

She truly did not know why she lost. It wasn't Cornet's drop shots. It might have been that she didn't serve all that well, or made a few too many errors.

Because this time, it wasn't that she had physical issues as she did in Australia, and as she did in losing to Cornet the last time they met, this past winter in Dubai. It wasn't that she just had a bad day.

Mother says Sonic served her family a bag of marijuana with their meal

Can anyone say ...................... "Lawsuit?" It's the American Way ............... Dumb old me, on a plane once, out of Chicago, got my free airline bag of peanuts ... took a mouthful, chomped down, ouch, there was a metal screw .... could have choked, swallowed it, could have been bad. Did nothing .... dumb old me.

A woman in Frederick, Maryland was shocked and concerned when she found a bag of marijuana mixed in with her family’s drive-thru meal.

As reported by The Frederick News-Post, Carla McFarland took her two children, a 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son, to get a special treat: a meal at Sonic. On Wednesday, the family rolled through the drive-thru and McFarland passed her children their chicken strips and french fries, then reached into the bag for her own food. That’s when she discovered a small plastic bag of what looked like marijuana, in with her french fries.

“I just kind of sat there in my car in shock,” McFarland said. “I kept thinking, what if my kids had eaten it?” The mother called the police and notified Sonic’s management. They were apologetic and the customer’s meal was remade at no charge. “I definitely can't say that they didn't go out of their way,” said McFarland. “I honestly think they were more in shock than I was.”

A Sonic employee eventually admitted that the marijuana was hers and guessed that the bag slipped out of her apron at some point. That fast food worker was fired and McFarland was notified. John Louderback, the franchisee of the Sonic location, told the paper that the incident is under investigation and did not speak about the employee drug-testing policies of the restaurant.

Lieutenant Jennifer Bailey, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said that the case was under investigation and no arrests had yet been made. The bag was seized by deputies but it is unknown if the contents were tested to confirm it was marijuana.

Ms. McFarland decided to post her experience on Facebook and the story drew laughs from some of her friends. The mother was not laughing though. “I think that's why everyone thinks it's so funny, because it's marijuana and it's going to be legalized,” McFarland said. “It could have been crack. It could have been cocaine in that little baggie.”

Al-Qaida breakaway formally declares Islamic State

BAGHDAD (AP) — The al-Qaida breakaway group that has seized much of northern Syria and huge tracks of neighboring Iraq formally declared the creation of an Islamic state on Sunday in the territory under its control.

The spokesman for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, made the announcement in an audio statement posted online. Islamic extremists have long dreamed of recreating the Islamic state, or caliphate, that ruled over the Middle East for hundreds of years.

Abu Mohammed al-Adnani said the group's chief, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is the new leader, or caliph, of the Islamic state. He called on those living in the areas under the organization's control to swear allegiance to al-Baghdadi and support him.

"The legality of all emirates, groups, states and organizations becomes null by the expansion of the caliph's authority and the arrival of its troops to their areas," al-Adnani said.

He said that with the creation of the caliphate, the group was changing its name to just the Islamic State, dropping the mention of Iraq and the Levant.

It was unclear what immediate practical impact the declaration would have on the ground in Syria and Iraq, or among the wider global jihadi community.

2 arrested, 22 dead in India building collapses

NEW DELHI (AP) — Police in southern India detained two construction company directors Sunday as rescuers using gas cutters and shovels searched for dozens of workers believed buried in the rubble of a building that collapsed during monsoon rains. It was one of two weekend building collapses that killed at least 22 people.

The 11-story apartment structure the workers were building collapsed late Saturday while heavy rains and lightning were pounding the outskirts of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state. Police said 31 construction workers had been pulled out so far and the search was continuing for more than a dozen others.

Four of the workers died on the spot and another seven succumbed to injuries in a hospital, said police officer George Fernandes.

Feeble voices were being heard from those trapped in the debris, said T.S. Sridhar, the disaster management agency commissioner. Rescuers used gas cutters, iron rods and shovels after cranes lifted concrete blocks to get to the survivors.

Nearly 90 contract workers were believed to have been in the basement of the structure to collect their weekly wages when it collapsed, Sridhar said, adding that the exact number of those trapped was unknown.

The collapsed structure was one of the two towers being built in the area, he said.

Arizona wildfire passes lines; shelter opens

VERNON, Ariz. (AP) — Fire crews are hoping that lighter winds on Saturday will spur progress against a wildfire that has charred more than 8 square miles in eastern Arizona's White Mountains and prompted crews to set up a shelter for evacuees.

The Red Cross announced Saturday that it has opened a temporary shelter after windy conditions pushed the San Juan fire past key containment lines

"The winds picked up and we did have a lot of movement on the fire," said Pamela Baltimore, a spokeswoman for the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. "The fire crossed containment lines to the east and west."

The north end of the fire was holding and planes were dropping slurry on active sections of the blaze in an attempt to re-establish the fire lines on the east and west flanks, officials said. The fire remains zero percent contained, officials said.

Communities mostly populated with summer homes remained under mandatory evacuation orders because of the fire that was reported around noon Thursday. Its cause remains under investigation.

A total of 37 summer homes in the Red Cabin Ranch and Whiting homestead areas remained evacuated as a precaution, and authorities said up to 90 structures in three communities could be threatened by the fire. Those structures include homes, barns and sheds.

More than 200 residents and tourists left the areas by the time evacuations were ordered Thursday night, Apache County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Richard Guinn said.

Pre-evacuation notices also have been issued for the area of Greens Peak Hideaway, officials said.

A public meeting has been scheduled in Vernon later Saturday, officials said.

There have been no reported injuries. The fire is about 135 miles east of Phoenix, near the New Mexico line.

My creation theory - Part ONE

I had one of them epiphany things today, in the shower no less.

I was washing, and a thought came to me ... just how cleverly and efficient our body is. Someone put a lot of thought in to the design of the body, who, when and where did it all happen. Regardless of your religious beliefs, someone, somewhere had to give some thought to the design of the body, it is too cleverly done to just be by chance. So, I gave some thought to it, thus, the epiphany thing.

My theory. God and some friends were sitting around talking, maybe around one of those little "fire" things that are popular today, or one similar. Now, they were just masses of energy, they had no form, this was a really long time ago. God spoke. "Guys, this is no good, we need some sort of form that we can all see, I'm really tire of these "energy mass" things that we are.. I want something I can see, I am getting tired of talking to nothing, you know what I mean?"

"Great idea," another energy mass said, "ah, what is an image, God?"

God replied, "Well, something we can see, make each one different, and, since I am somewhat the boss, new word I just came up with, boss, I like that. We are going to design schloks."

"Ah, what is a schlok."

"Ok, bad word, any ideas?"

They gave some thought to the idea, it was all new to them, words were even new, and they had never seen, well anything, the world as we know it, had not been created yet.

So, God, and "they" got together, came up with the word "shape" and decided to get to work, once they figured out that concept. This was all new to them.

SMI - 6/28/14 and Craig Young

Another Saturday Morning Inspection. A Saturday does not go my that I don't think about my days at The Citadel, and the inspections we had, on Saturday Morning. Bleached wooden floors so they were as white as possible, brass work polished, clothes properly arranged, shoes shined. Sometimes spent the night getting ready for it. And on some occasions all that work done ...... after ...... a party.

Best wishes to dear friend Craig Young who had some "work" done on his legs last week. Our friendship goes back many years. I was having lunch one day, at Roger's Old New Landmark, sitting at the bar. Someone sat next to me. I think it was after Christmas that year. Someone had given Roger a new telephone system for the occasions. It did not work right. Her name escapes me right now, but, she told us that it was not working right. I told her it was the wiring. "It comes in high on the wall, there, travels down to the floor, then back up to the phone. It is too high for the signal to climb."

The guy next to me agrees, and we go on for a while. It was Craig, and we have been good friends since. I have done some printing, designing, etc., over the years, and given him the highest designation for being a "pain in the ass" customer. He likes that. We have done many things together, enjoyed them all.

I wish him a speedy recovery, and he has advertised for some part time help. I applied.

"I would like to apply. I have a few limitations. I can only work two hours a day. Can only lift three pounds. Need a five minute break, every ten minutes. I sometimes get dizzy when standing up. I need at least two "potty" breaks every hour. I can only stand for eight minutes and then must sit down. I am allergic to dust, paint and cleaning chemicals. I will need transportation to and from work. If you need references, call Craig Young or Joan Batstra at 1st Response. Oh, I have had a triple bi-pass and have limited use of the range of my arms. My nick-name is "Shaky" and I am a Veteran, and an explosives demolition expert. What, honey I can't hear you, what else should I put, oops, I dropped my coffee cup. Who, Craig, I told them .... no, I am not going to tell them I will not work for them if Craig picks me up and takes me home. My heart,, remember? I look forward to hearing from you in regards to my employment. My telephone number is unlisted as I am under indictment for unemployment fraud and don't wish for them to find me."

They never called me back, wonder why. Joan Batstra, who I sent the application to, replied, and indicated they had already hired some with the same qualifications.

USA Soccer plays again this week, sometime, will be glued to the set, I have to watch it that way, otherwise, when I fall asleep I would slide to the floor ..... USA ...... USA ........ USA ...... took me a while but I am learning the cheers ....................... 

Fast food employee at Taco John’s says manager forced him to wear name tag that read ‘Gaytard’

A fast food worker in Yankton, South Dakota alleges that he was harassed and discriminated against when his manager forced him to wear a name tag with a homophobic slur. 

Earlier this week, KELO Keloland Television reported that Tyler Brandt, a 16-year-old Taco John’s employee, quit his job after a manager pressured him into wearing a name tag with a demeaning label. 

“The manager pulled me into the office and gave me a name tag that read ‘Gaytard’ on it and asked me to wear it,” Brandt explained. “So I put it on because I didn’t want to upset him and I felt that if I did do anything to upset him that it would cause me to possibly lose my job because he would be looking for ways to fire me.” 

Brandt’s co-worker Kayla Martian told KDLT News that the manager made his feelings about Brandt known saying, "I remember one time he said, 'Tyler is so weird because he's so gay, it's not even funny.'" 

KDLT reports that Brandt learned early on that the management at that Taco John’s franchise had a “reputation for picking on employees,” though he didn’t think it would have gone as far as it did.

An old post ..... asked for ..

For those of you who have never traveled to the West or Southwest, cattle guards are horizontal steel rails placed at fence openings, in dug-out places in the roads adjacent to highways (sometimes across highways), to prevent cattle from crossing over that area.  For some reason the cattle will not step on the "guards," probably because they fear getting their feet caught between the rails. 

A few months ago, President Obama received a report that there were over 100,000 cattle guards in Colorado .  Because Colorado ranchers had protested his proposed changes in grazing policies, he ordered the Secretary of the Interior to fire half of the cattle guards immediately. 

Before the Interior Secretary could respond and presumably straighten him out, Vice-President Joe Biden intervened with a request that before any guards were fired, they be given six months of retraining. 

And, they are running the country ..........

What to write? I have checked the news today, about the same, around the world. None of it can I figure. I have read a few blogs by "experts" and ...... a plethora of words, empty words, that meant nothing other than fulfillment of a contract so that financial remuneration can head towards the originator of the words.

Soccer seems to be the main topic, and if you Google it, there are many links where you can see dogs jumping and howling at large screen TV's with soccer on the screen. There must be a point of some kind there, will let you make up your own mind.

Oprah does not like Michelle Obama because she steals the show from Barack. Many will say, "Who cares." But, just think about that for a while .... Oprah, Michelle, Barack ...... OK, that's enough.

Much time is devoted to the question, "Where will Lebron end up?" In my opinion, if you cannot beat them, join them .... he will go to San Antonio and get another ring next year.

Some guy from China bought an expensive lunch for a bunch of homeless. In this country, every day, there are thousands of people doing the same thing, with no publicity. Which leads me to believe that HE did it for publicity, well, he sang a song, I think, the world, people one. No one else would listen so he bought one. Hey, come eat lunch, listen to me sing and I will give you $300. No one got $300 though but they did have to sit and listen to him sing. One guy, filled his pockets with food and left, saying he had an appointment with Donald Trump who promised to buy his dinner.

The Hip Replacement Hip Replacement Company of Las Vegas, Nevada recently announced that they are considering opening a new subsidiary company that would be located in Fallon, Nevada, that would offer hip replacements for those who have had unsuccessful hip replacements.

In 1940 at Johns Hopkins hospital, Dr. Austin T. Moore (1899-1963), an American surgeon, reported and performed the first metallic hip replacement surgery. The original prosthesis he designed was a proximal femoral replacement, with a large fixed head, made of the Cobalt-Chrome alloy Vitallium. 

Most of these replacements have been successful, but a few have failed and required additional hip replacement surgery.

Now, we are finding that a large number of the hip replacement hip replacement surgeries have been unsuccessful for the same problems encountered with the second replacement.

The third level replacement prosthesis is in development, and will replace the replacement after more testing is performed. HRHRIII is looking for volunteers to test the new unit.

How do you rob a drive-thru?

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — A man who worked at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in northern South Carolina has been accused of robbing a KFC. Fifty-year-old old Jeffrey Coley is accused of taking $516 from the KFC in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Monday.

Police say Coley pulled a gun at the drive-thru at KFC and demanded cash. Coley was arrested Tuesday after a chase. Police say the cash drawer was still in the vehicle.

He's charged with armed robbery, possession of a gun during a violent crime, failure to stop for police and possession of methamphetamine. It wasn't clear whether he has an attorney.

Chick-fil-A spokesman Mark Baldwin tells The Rock Hill Herald Coley was fired June 18 from a restaurant in Indian Land when he failed to show up to work two consecutive days.

I heard of a guy who tried to rob the drive-thru ATM at his bank, pulled a gun on it and the machine blew a fuse ..... and it died.

Three Teens Dead, Two Injured Following Single Car Crash In Licking County, Ohio

I have driven this road on many occasions, how tragic this is. Two of the three names mentioned are quite familiar to us, not sure if an relationship though, just good Licking County names. This is tragic, five kids, out for the Summer, not a care in the world, a whole life ahead ...... and then this, apparently due to excessive speed. The two survivors will never be the same, especially the driver. I probably have been in a similar situation, but, by the 
"Grace of God" 
.... a different finish. 
Such a tragedy.


LICKING COUNTY, Ohio - Ohio State Highway Patrol says three people are dead 
and two people are injured after a single car accident in Licking County.

According to police, a silver Mitsubishi Diamante carrying five people smashed into a tree and split in two just after 1 PM on Hardscrabble Road, near Alexandria.

All three passengers in the back seat of the vehicle - two females and one male - were partially ejected during the crash and killed. 
 They were not wearing seatbelts. 

Police say the victims were, 17-year-old Michael Hoskinson, 15-year-old Chyenne Spurgeon 
and 15-year-old Linzie Bell

Two occupants in the driver's and passenger seat were injured in the crash, but survived. 
 Their condition is unknown.

All of the car's occupants were between 15 and 17-years-old.

Investigators say skid marks just before the impact may indicate either the driver applied the brakes or he was traveling so fast he was trying to regain control of the car before it struck the tree.

Police say speed was a factor in the crash.

North Korea says Seth Rogen's new movie is an 'act of war'

Kim Jong-un's government warns of "merciless" retaliation if the US doesn't ban 'The Interview'

The government of North Korea today issued an unsurprisingly harsh statement about Seth Rogen's upcoming film, The Interview, denouncing the action-comedy as an "act of war." In the movie, Rogen and James Franco star as two journalists who, after scoring an interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, are ordered by the CIA to assassinate him. In a statement published by the state-run KCNA news agency, a foreign ministry spokesman characterized Rogen as a "gangster filmmaker" and called upon the US to block the film, according to a report from the AFP.

"The act of making and screening such a movie that portrays an attack on our top leadership... is a most wanton act of terror and act of war, and is absolutely intolerable," the spokesman said, adding that the US would face a "resolute and merciless response" if it fails to ban the film, which is slated for release later this year.

"IT SHOWS THE DESPERATION OF THE US GOVERNMENT AND AMERICAN SOCIETY."

Kim Myong-chol, an unofficial spokesman for the North Korean government, was similarly critical of the film in an interview with the Telegraph last week. "There is a special irony in this story line as it shows the desperation of the US government and American society," Kim said.

"A film about the assassination of a foreign leader mirrors what the US has done in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Ukraine," he added. "And let us not forget who killed [President John F.] Kennedy – Americans. In fact, President [Barack] Obama should be careful in case the US military wants to kill him as well."

The North Korean regime is certainly no stranger to belligerent rhetoric, having warned the US and its allies of "merciless" punishment on multiple occasions. Rogen, meanwhile, seems to have taken the criticism in stride.

Supreme Court Rules Obama Overstepped His Authority

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court on Wednesday limited the president's power to fill high-level vacancies with temporary appointments, ruling in favor of Senate Republicans in their partisan clash with President Barack Obama.

The court's first-ever case involving the Constitution's recess appointments clause ended in a unanimous decision holding that Obama's appointments to the National Labor Relations Board in 2012 without Senate confirmation were illegal. Obama invoked the Constitution's provision giving the president the power to make temporary appointments when the Senate is in recess.

Problem is, the court said, the Senate was not actually in a formal recess when Obama acted.

Obama had argued that the Senate was on an extended holiday break and that the brief sessions it held every three days were a sham that was intended to prevent him from filling seats on the NLRB.

The justices rejected that argument Wednesday.

The issue of recess appointments receded in importance after the Senate's Democratic majority changed the rules to make it harder for Republicans to block confirmation of most Obama appointees.

But the ruling's impact may be keenly felt by the White House next year if Republicans capture control of the Senate in the November election. The potential importance of the ruling lies in the Senate's ability to block the confirmation of judges and the leaders of independent agencies like the NLRB. A federal law gives the president the power to appoint acting heads of Cabinet-level departments to keep the government running.

Still, the outcome was the least significant loss possible for the administration. The justices, by a 5-4 vote, rejected a sweeping lower court ruling against the administration that would have made it virtually impossible for any future president to make recess appointments.

The lower court held that the only recess recognized by the Constitution is the once-a-year break between sessions of Congress. It also said that only vacancies that arise in that recess could be filled. So the high court has left open the possibility that a president, with a compliant Congress, could make recess appointments in the future.

A recess appointment can last no more than two years. Recess appointees who subsequently won Senate confirmation include Chief Justice Earl Warren and Justice William Brennan, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, two current NLRB members and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director Richard Cordray. Former UN Ambassador John Bolton is among recess appointees who left office because they could not win a Senate vote.

Ivan gets my award for Sportsman of the Year

On December 2, Basque athlete Iván Fernández Anaya was competing in a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre. He was running second, some distance behind race leader Abel Mutai - bronze medalist in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics. As they entered the finishing straight, he saw the Kenyan runner - the certain winner of the race - mistakenly pull up about 10 meters before the finish, thinking he had already crossed the line.

Fernández Anaya quickly caught up with him, but instead of exploiting Mutai’s mistake to speed past and claim an unlikely victory, he stayed behind and, using gestures, guided the Kenyan to the line and let him cross first.

Ivan Fernandez Anaya, a Basque runner of 24 years who is considered an athlete with a big future (champion of Spain of 5,000 meters in promise category two years ago) said after the test:

“But even if they had told me that winning would have earned me a place in the Spanish team for the European championships, I wouldn’t have done it either. I also think that I have earned more of a name having done what I did than if I had won. And that is very important, because today, with the way things are in all circles, in soccer, in society, in politics, where it seems anything goes, a gesture of honesty goes down well.”

He said at the beginning: “unfortunately, very little has been said of the gesture. And it’s a shame. In my opinion, it would be nice to explain to children, so they do not think that sport is only what they see on TV: violent kicks in abundance, posh statements, fingers in the eyes of the enemy …”

Anti-Gay Florida AG Will Fight Two Cases Attempting To Topple Same-Sex Marriage Ban

I am contemplating this,  is there an inconsistency here? 

Florida's conservative, thrice-married, anti-gay, Republican attorney general has announced she will now fight two state court lawsuits aimed at overturning the Sunshine State's ban on same-sex marriage. 

Attorney General Pam Bondi last night announced she will now be representing the State of Florida by intervening in two cases aimed at overturning a ban on same-sex marriage. Bondi came under harsh criticism last month when she claimed in a federal court filing that same-sex marriage would “impose significant public harm” and play havoc with existing marriage laws in the Sunshine State. 

As The New Civil Rights Movement reported early this month, Bondi also suggested that same-sex couples don’t create stable or enduring homes.

“Florida’s marriage laws,” Bondi wrote in the federal court filing, “have a close, direct, and rational relationship to society’s legitimate interest in increasing the likelihood that children will be born to and raised by the mothers and fathers who produced them in stable and enduring family units.”

Bondi, 48, is on her third marriage.

This morning the Tampa Bay Times reported on Bondi succumbing to right-wing pressure.

Conservative activists hailed Bondi's response to the federal lawsuit, but had been critical of her for not defending the state right-to-marry cases.

John Stemberger, president of the conservative Florida Family Action in Orlando, praised Bondi. "The most important thing is that if the judge were to grant a motion and find a new-found right to marry, which does not exist, then the attorney general would be in a position to enjoin that until the federal case plays out," he said Tuesday.

Elizabeth Schwartz, an attorney in the Miami-Dade case of six same-sex couples who have sued to marry, said Bondi should be defending the rights of same-sex couples.

"It's also her job to make sure that citizens of her state are not discriminated against. And courts throughout the country have resoundingly found that the ban against marriage equality discriminates against gay and lesbian people," she said.

Nadine Smith, CEO of Equality Florida issued a strong statement last night.

"It is disappointing that at a time when attorneys general and governors across the country are refusing to defend these discriminatory marriage bans, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has decided to pour state resources into defending the indefensible. In decisions by judges appointed by both Democrats and Republicans, court after court has determined that barring loving same sex couples from marriage is unconstitutional, and we look forward to hearing from Florida's courts in the near future. This latest development shows just how out of touch Pam Bondi and the Rick Scott administration are with the majority of Florida voters.”

Man wins $916 on bet that Luis Suarez would bite opponent at World Cup

With the World Cup in full swing, it's usual for some of the matches to get a little heated. Still, when Uruguay's Luis Suarez apparently bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during their game on Tuesday, most people were shocked. 

Then there were those that saw it coming. Cox Media Group reports that Norwegian man Thomas Syversen actually won 5,600 krone (about $916) by placing a bet that Uruguay's Suarez would chomp down on one of his opponents during the Uruguay-Italy match.

Now, Suarez has been known to bite players in the past. This is actually the third time he's faced punishment for sinking his teeth into an opposing player. Even with that history, what were the odds on such a bet? A whooping 175 to 1!

Syversen isn't the only one to cash in on Suarez's actions. According to Yahoo Sports , betting site Betsafe also posted the unusual wager on their site. According to Betsafe, they will be paying out 39 winners who took the prop bet.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that FIFA has officially charged Suarez with biting Chiellini. If Suarez is found guilty, he could be banned for at least two matches and up to 24 months. In which case, Syversen might have to rely on some more traditional forms of gambling.

Out of touch? Hillary Clinton hits back after wealth gaffe

Washington (AFP) - Hillary Clinton sought to nuance her remark that she and ex-president husband Bill were "dead broke" when they left the White House, insisting she was not out of touch.

The widely-anticipated 2016 Democratic presidential candidate earlier this month kicked off her book tour telling ABC television the Clintons left the White House "not only dead broke, but in debt."

"We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for (daughter) Chelsea's education. You know, it was not easy," said Clinton, a Yale-educated lawyer herself before entering public service.

Republicans jumped on her comments. Even some supporters cringed at what sounded like elitism and insensitivity to the plight of ordinary Americans, at a time when the US economy is still suffering.

"Well, I shouldn't have said the five or so words that I said, but my inartful use of those few words doesn't change who I am, what I've stood for my entire life, what I stand for today," the former top US diplomat and former first lady told "PBS NewsHour."

Acknowledging the "terrific" opportunities she has had in her life, a "grateful" Clinton pointed to the hardships of many Americans in the economic downturn.

"So many Americans are feeling, you know, shut out, shut down, the great recession hasn't ended for too many Americans: wages are flat, families are struggling, not enough new jobs, or new businesses are being created, and it's important that we all try to figure out what we're going to do," Clinton said.

"That's what I've done my entire life, fighting for a higher minimum wage, or family leave, now paid family leave, which I believe in, equal pay for equal work, I have a very long record."

Asked about Bill Clinton's public defense of her record, the former New York senator insisted: "I don't need anybody to defend my record; I think my record speaks for itself."

2 men throw out $1M ticket, sue New Jersey Lottery

MAHWAH, N.J. (AP) — Two New York men are suing the New Jersey Lottery after they threw out a Powerball ticket worth $1 million.

Salvatore Cambria and Erick Onyango, of Suffern, New York, argue in their federal lawsuit that the lottery didn't quickly update its website with the winning numbers from the March 23 drawing.

Cambria tells The Record newspaper he asked Onyango to check the website soon after the 11 p.m. drawing. Cambria tossed the ticket when the numbers didn't match. The men now think the site was showing the previous drawing's numbers.

They say they realized they had won the next day. But by then, their ticket was on its way to a landfill in Canada. The men say they have two other tickets showing serial numbers that prove they had a winner.

Why Boehner Can’t Sue Obama

"I didn't mean THAT court, I meant this one."

John Boehner is ready to sue President Obama, but the House speaker may not be able to make it through the courthouse doors.

Boehner announced Wednesday that he would sue the president for his failure to “faithfully execute the laws of this country.” In the opinion of the speaker, according to a memo he circulated, Obama’s reliance on executive orders meant that he was acting with “king-like authority at the expense of the American people and their elected legislators.” As a result, Boehner said he planned to sue the president over executive orders to be named later under the aegis of a resolution passed by the House of Representatives.

But Boehner may not be able to do so. According to Erwin Chemerinsky, the dean of the University of California, Irvine Law School, the speaker of the House does not have the ability to sue the president in this situation, even if Congress says he does. Chemerinsky says “standing,” the doctrine that allows a person to file a lawsuit in federal court by demonstrating that real harm has been caused to them, is defined by the Constitution. As a result, even if Congress passes a law, or in this case a resolution, which only requires approval by the House, it will not be binding on federal courts, as the Constitution trumps any law, let alone a resolution, and does not give members of Congress the ability to sue if they cannot prove real harm.

Michael Steel, a spokesman for Boehner, said there were no issued with standing. Other Republican representatives echoed that position, including Rep. Charles Boustany of Louisiana, who called Boehner’s proposed suit “an outstanding move.” Conservative Rep. Steve King of Iowa added, “This is something that I’ve looked at and worked towards for a long time.”

Blackmail: Directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1929, not only was this the first film he directed with sound, but it was the first British “talkie”. It was also released as a silent film, so the talking is a bit sparse.

Dick Tracy: This is the original 15 chapter film serial combined into one film which runs over four and a half hours.

Dick Tracy Detective: Based on the Dick Tracy comic strip, this 1945 film was the first full-length feature film adaptation of the character as opposed to the numerous serials that had been down up to this point. Tracy must solve a series of murders that appear to have no connection.

Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome: Another Dick Tracy film from 1947, this one is notable for starring Boris Karloff as Gruesome. A gang of bank robbers discover a nerve gas that will freeze people in place.

Five Minutes To Live: A movie about bank robbers that is most notable for starring Vic Tayback (Mel on the TV series Alice), Johnny Cash and a six-year-old Ron Howard that is credited as “Ronnie Howard”.

Murder!: A 1930 film by Alfred Hitchcock based on the novel Enter Sir Johnby Clemence Dane and Helen Simpson. It revolves around a murder in an acting troupe and the member who is found standing over the body suffering from amnesia.

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog: A 1927 silent film by Alfred Hitchcock about a landlady who suspects her lodger is a murder killing women around London.

The Phantom of the Opera: A 1925 film adaptation of the novel by Gaston Leroux, this silent film version stars the infamous Lon Chaney as the Phantom.

Night of the Living Dead: The first of the “Living Dead” films by George A. Romero. Even though it was made in 1968, it fell into the public domain immediately because the copyright notice was inadvertently left off the finished film.

Plan 9 from Outer Space: Considered by many to be one of the worst films ever made, Ed Wood’s “classic” has to be seen to be believed.

Rocketship X-M: A 1950′s sci-fi “classic” starring Lloyd Bridges about a spaceship that misses the target of landing on the moon and somehow ends up on Mars where it discovers an ancient city.

The Brain That Wouldn’t Die: A 1962 film that is probably best remembered for being mocked on Mystery Science Theater 3000 more than its own merits.

The Brother from Another Planet: A cult classic film that was released in 1984, but sadly another example of a copyright notice being left off the print, so it immediately fell into the public domain. A mute alien lands in Harlem and is chased by intergalactic bounty hunters.

The Last Man on Earth: Starring Vincent Price, this was the first film adaptation of the novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. This version was made in 1964, and then followed by The Omega Man in 1971 and I Am Legend in 2007.

The Phantom Planet: A 1961 film that also has the dubious honor of being remembered mostly for having been on Mystery Science Theater 3000. A rocketship ends up on a planet full of mini-people, and the astronauts get shrunk down to their size … it just gets stranger from there.

White Zombie: A 1932 horror film starring the infamous Bela Lugosi about a man who turns to a witch doctor to win the love of a young woman, but she instead gets turned into a zombie. This was the film that inspired the name of the band White Zombie.

Boehner says House plans to sue Obama

I am neither an Obama fan nor a fan of "politics." On  my "list" ... politicians are at the bottom. Above them are some despicable professions and people. I doubt that this potential "multi billion dollar extravaganza"  will result in any changes in the status quo. Our only salvation would be it it was televised and we, the people, shared in the advertising profits. It will be business as usual. Obama, assuming things DO NOT change, will turn the "reigns" of government over to Hillary, and the new "regime" will continue wallowing around in the Washington "mud," and the economy will flounder, jobs will be sent to China, Walmart will continue to grow and the price of beef will continue to skyrocket. Cattle rustling will become the new big business.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House will vote next month on legislation authorizing a campaign-season lawsuit accusing President Barack Obama of failing to carry out the laws passed by Congress, Speaker John Boehner announced on Wednesday.

In a memo distributed to House members, Boehner, R-Ohio, accused Obama of "aggressive unilateralism" and said if left unchecked, it would give the president "king-like authority at the expense of the American people and their elected legislators."

White House press secretary Josh Earnest dismissed any suggestion that the president has failed to act within the law in issuing executive orders or taking other actions. "We feel completely confident that the president was operating within his authority as the president of the United States to take these steps on behalf of the American people," he told reporters.

Whatever the outcome of the suit in the courts, Boehner's announcement guarantees creation of yet another political struggle between Republicans and Obama and his Democratic allies in a campaign already full of them.

"On matters ranging from health care and energy to foreign policy and education, President Obama has repeatedly run an end-around" on the public and Congress, the speaker wrote. He accused him of "ignoring some statutes completely, selectively enforcing others and at times, creating laws of his own."

At a news conference, Boehner strongly brushed aside a question of whether impeachment proceedings could result from the suit.

In his memo, he stopped short of accusing the president of violating his oath of office. Instead, he said Obama was "straining the boundaries of the solemn oath he took on Inauguration Day."

Deadly giant hornet attacks kill 42, injure 1,600 in China

A rash of attacks by giant hornets has left at least 42 people dead and 1,600 injured in the Chinese province of Shaanxi.

These Asian giant hornets, which the Japanese call "giant sparrow bees," can grow up to five centimetres long, with a six-millimetre long stinger. 

Japanese entomologist Masato Ono described their sting to National Geographic, saying that it "feels like a hot nail" being driven into your flesh. 

The pain of the sting itself is the least of the worries from these hornets, though. The venom they inject after a sting is highly toxic, sending anyone who might be allergic into anaphylactic shock, but even those who aren't allergic can still die from the sting due to kidney failure. 

The hornets are found throughout eastern Asian and they're especially common in Japan, where they cause between 30-40 deaths a year.

Wallach died on June 24, 2014 in New York, aged 98.Wallach is survived by his wife, three children, five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Supreme Court bans warrantless cell phone searches, updates privacy laws

What about conversations OVERHEARD coming from people in public places, talking loudly, so that everyone can hear??????? I get so sick of them. We used to have phone booths so a door could be closed and we could talk in private ..... now .... many, talk and preach their conversation to the world ....... "Can you say ....... RUDE?" 

The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that police cannot go snooping through people’s cell phones without a warrant, in a unanimous decision that amounts to a major statement in favor of privacy rights.

Police agencies had argued that searching through the data on cell phones was no different than asking someone to turn out his pockets, but the justices rejected that, saying a cell phone is more fundamental.

The ruling amounts to a 21st century update to legal understanding of privacy rights.

“The fact that technology now allows an individual to carry such information in his hand does not make the information any less worthy of the protection for which the Founders fought,” Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote for the unanimous court.

“Our answer to the question of what police must do before searching a cell phone seized incident to an arrest is accordingly simple— get a warrant.”

Justices even said police cannot check a cellphone’s call log, saying even those contain more information that just phone numbers, and so perusing them is a violation of privacy that can only be justified with a warrant.

The chief justice said cellphones are different not only because people can carry around so much more data — the equivalent of millions of pages of documents — that police would have access to, but that the data itself is qualitatively different than what someone might otherwise carry.

He said it could lay bare someone’s entire personal history, from their medical records to their “specific movements down to the minute.”

Tycoon to treat homeless to lunch

Seems to me that this money could be put to better use, almost a "slap in the face" to the homeless ... reality comes in to play for them every day, not "filet of beef." I am not there, nor in their situation, I would like to think I would prefer to tell him where to "stick" his tuna ..... but, "never look a gift horse in the mouth." I really have no idea what that really means, but I have often heard the expression.

NEW YORK (AP) -- A Chinese tycoon is feeding hundreds of homeless New Yorkers some fancy food — in Central Park.

The lunch for 250 residents of a Manhattan shelter will be served Wednesday at the Boathouse restaurant.

Recycling magnate Chen Guangbiao (gwong-BYOW') is offering them sesame-seed-encrusted tuna, beef filet and berries with creme fraiche. He'll also provide entertainment by singing "We are the World." And he's promised each guest $300.

Chen says he wants to disprove the cliche image of rich Chinese spending money mostly on luxuries.

But his American ambitions surpass philanthropy.

Earlier this year, the 46-year-old businessman wanted to buy The New York Times. Times chairman Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., said the newspaper was not for sale.

To announce the lunch, Chen placed ads in the Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Starbucks price hike starts today

One lady in Terra Haute, Indiana said she drank seven cups yesterday to get them at the lower price. "Wow, I am really awake," she stated, "not gonna buy any for a week, at least. Excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom."

Starbucks coffee customers will start paying 5 to 20 cents more for their daily cup of Joe starting Tuesday, June 24. Customers can also soon expect to pay $1 more for the packaged coffee it sells in supermarkets.

The company raised prices on some of the drinks sold in its cafes a year ago. The latest hikes don’t seem to be driven purely by the surging bean costs that have pressured other coffee sellers to raise prices, however, since Starbucks has said it already locked in its coffee contracts for the rest of this fiscal year and much of the next.

In an email Friday, Starbucks spokesman Jim Olson noted that many factors go into pricing decisions, including “competitive dynamics” and the company’s “cost structure,” which he said includes costs for a variety of ingredients, as well as materials, labor and occupancy costs.

Starbucks Corp. said the price increases in its cafes will kick in Tuesday and vary depending on the region.

Prices for medium and large brewed coffees, which are known as Grande and Venti, respectively, will go up between 10 cents and 15 cents in most U.S. markets, the company said.

Certain drinks, such as tall brewed coffees and Frappuccinos, won’t see higher prices in most places, the company said. Tall brewed coffees were among the drinks that were hit by Starbucks’ price hikes a year ago.

The $1 price boost on packaged coffees sold in supermarkets and other retail outlets will kick in July 21, and follow J.M. Smucker’s recent decision to raise prices on its coffees, which include Folgers.

Starbucks noted that it cut prices in April of last year. It said the packaged coffee sold in its cafes won’t be affected.

Suarez risks losing sponsorship deal with poker brand 888

CURITIBA Brazil (Reuters) - Poker brand 888 said it was reviewing its sponsorship deal with Luis Suarez after the Uruguay striker was accused of biting an opponent during a World Cup match on Tuesday.

Suarez, who plays for Liverpool in the English Premier League, became one of the online gambling company's brand ambassadors last month.

"Following the allegations made against Luis Suarez in regards to his behavior during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Italy, 888poker is seriously reviewing its relationship with the player as we will not tolerate any unsporting behavior," 888poker said in a statement on Wednesday.

Soccer's governing body FIFA is investigating an incident which has made headlines around the world. Suarez, twice previously banned for biting, looks likely to be hit with another lengthy suspension despite escaping punishment during the match.

Viral story of disfigured girl kicked out of KFC was hoax

No picture, she is an adorable little girl who has somewhat been disfigured by the attack. I cannot imagine WHY her family would want her photograph plastered all over the newspaper and television, unless they are expecting some sympathetic donations .........

You may remember seeing pictures of Victoria Wilcher, the 3-year-old attacked by her family’s three pit bulls who was supposedly asked on May 15 to leave a KFC in Jackson, Miss., because her facial scars were too disturbing. The Internet loved the story of a disfigured little girl bullied by a multinational food conglomerate.

But the Laurel Leader-Call in Mississippi is calling it a fundraising hoax — specifically, a “Kentucky Fried Hoax.”

Several anonymous sources told the paper’s Sean Murphy that the story told by the girl’s grandmother to a local TV station about the incident doesn't match the facts.

The family recounted the story on the Victoria’s Victories Facebook page, which documents the child’s recovery from an April pit bull attack that left half her face paralyzed and caused her to lose an eye. They originally said the child and her grandmother were asked to leave a KFC that turned out to have been closed for years. Victoria’s aunt Teri Rials Bates, who maintains the page, later said it happened at another location on Woodrow Wilson Drive near the Jackson hospital where Victoria went for treatment.

Security camera footage from that KFC and another near the hospital does not show children matching Victoria’s description going into either restaurant on May 15, according to sources interviewed by the Leader-Call. Nor did any orders taken that day include both sweet tea and mashed potatoes – what Mullins claimed she ordered for her granddaughter.

The source also said that many customers from the nearby hospital suffering various ailments had eaten at the KFC — and none had ever been asked to leave.
