"Whoops" becoming a problem

Harry VanArsdale, of the Institute on Weather in Phoenix, Arizona, and perhaps one of the leading Climatologists in the country, spoke today at the WOA meeting in Palm Desert, California. He indicated that in his opinion, much of the recent "airline turbulence" problem that has been affecting many airlines, could be contributed directly to weather changes.

"Evidence indicates that El Nino and its pattern is being interfered with by the unusual weather pattern as seen in the Transverse Eliptical Stream, evidenced by its unusual "Southern Sweep" as it is called. That pattern movement is causing transverse inversions at the higher atmosphere at the 30,000 altitude, thus causing an "empty convex" which the planes are entering, and experiencing dramatic losses in altitude," VanArsdale stated.

He indicated that the situation could get considerably worse. We are all familiar with the 100 year pattern, and are only in to the third year of the cycle. We could have 94 more years, each year the problem could get considerably worse. "I can see a scenario where airplanes could not even get the "lift" to get airborne, and if it did, the turbulence could be so excessive that the inconvenience would be too much for the passengers."

"I can see a time when passengers would be placed in a "harness," attached to the ceiling as well as the floor, and basically, suspended so they would not be affected by the turbulence.

The Airline Safety Engineers are working on the problem and hope to come up with a solution that may remedy the problem of "in air while flying turbulence."

"I have been using trains and busses," VanArsdale stated.
