My watch only it had a Gensler-Lee name on the face, I loved that watch, an ego inflator.
Watching Wimbledon this morning, another of my annual "favorites." All of my favorites are knocked out, Serena went down, so I can just watch it to enjoy the tennis.
Rolex commercial, that is another one that is on my list of marketing genius products. I have always liked watches for some reason, but I prefer a black leather band. Back in the 50's, in Reno, I bought a fancy watch, very plain, black velvet band, 22 diamonds around the face, I don't remember the price, but it was pricey for the day. It was very plain, but elegant. It made you feel .... different ... it didn't look pretentious, but wearing it made you feel good ... it was an ego booster. Unfortunately, it was in a pawn shop more than on my arm.
Today, I shop Walmart,, buy a nice looking watch, on sale, for five or ten dollars. When the battery dies, I go buy another one. They have one thing in common with the Rolex, they tell time. I do understand the ego thing, but, basically, a watch tells time.
Henry Ford, years ago, produced cars, what for you ask, transportation, to get you from point A to point B, and basically that is what they do today. Advertising and marketing and ego, dictate what price car you purchase. Actually, how long are in a car? Is it better to drive to work in a 50 thousand dollar car than a 20 thousand. Cars have air conditioning and heaters, so why have electric windows? Heated seats. Most people who can afford to purchase a car with heated seats probably have a heated garage. Ego and prestige dictate the price and make of car we purchase. There again, advertising does it all, status symbols. But still, a cars main purpose is transportation, advertising dictates the rest.
And when you drive your Cadillac wearing a Rolex watch, in a Louis Roth suit with alligator shoes on your feet and an Egyptian Cotton shirt, you have arrived, your Ego is fully inflated, you have arrived, led by the "sheepherder" called advertising.
I have to leave now in my Walmart shorts and shirt and shoes, wearing my no-name Walmart watch and driving our little Chevrolet Cavalier, and I waited, and got gas for $3.16. I was lousy at "estate planning,"
Thomas Jefferson said in 1802: "I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies."
"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."-- Thomas Jefferson
"When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout." .... jbd
"When once a job you have begun, do no stop till it is done. Whether the task be great or small, do it well, or not at all." .... Anon
