Obama Ratings Sink As Trustworthiness Comes Into Question

Barack Obama has been subjected to as many personal attacks as any modern president.

Terrorist. Traitor. Hater of America. Secret Muslim.

Unusually for a politician, however, the one thing he hasn't been called much is a liar, except by his most adamant critics.

That's all changed now. Obama is being widely called out for having claimed, repeatedly, that under the Affordable Care Act, people who liked their health insurance plans could keep them.

This was a key selling point. Yet it has turned out not to be true for everyone in the individual insurance market. There have been a number of reports that personnel in the White House knew this would be the case.

That leaves Obama in a terrible position — having Americans trying to decide whether he lied intentionally, or wasn't well informed enough to tell the truth.

It's a common presidential predicament, but it never looks good when a president's aides rush to defend him from accusations of lying by saying he was unaware of all the circumstances.

"When you've got a choice between being duplicitous or out of touch, out of touch is probably better, but it's a bad choice for presidents," says Mary Stuckey, a Georgia State University professor who has written several books about presidential rhetoric.

November is already here, clocks get set back tonight, the leaves are falling and it is definitely Fall. Watched a high school football game on TV last night, two teams from Georgia, saw the number one high school prospect quarterback. He was awesome, a man among boys. Deshaun Watson from Gainesville, apparently going to Clemson and most likely will start next year. If you think about it, there have been quite a few freshmen quarterbacks in college recently. These kids are so big and so strong. Gainesville was up by 42 at the half, don't know the outcome. I pursued it, them won 63 to zip.

What to talk about this morning? I have checked the news services, not much there. I think Washington is reluctant to say anything about anybody, and Obama was not aware of "it" or :anything" .... anyway. He did not know how the healthcare mess was progressing. It was his "pet" .... his namesake, and he never checked in on its progress while they were getting it ready. Maybe he played golf that day. "Screw-ups" are standard in this country anymore. As a country, we are merely a shadow of the greatness that we once were. Arrogance in Washington has not realized it yet, everyone else knows. "Misplaced arrogance."

I'm back, been to Krogers, still amazed at how they are able to offer all the products, and the volume of products, that they do. We are spoiled as a people, we take much for granted. I noticed one T-bone steak, not gigantic, $14, how can anyone afford that. I don't even check the "beef" section any more. I do check out the "day-old," it was empty today. I think it has become one of the most popular areas of the store. Looks like spaghetti, again, tonight for dinner. I've been doing the sauce in the CrockPot and letting it slow cook for about five hours, turns out well.

Saturday, always a different "feel" to it, for me. a day of promise, rest and relaxation and exploration. I have, on one occasions, driven a long distance, to Michigan, just to get a haircut. Driven to Columbus, Ohio many times for my Saturday get away. Always loved Saturday. Almost time for football ................

Stormy Halloween in central U.S. leaves four people dead

Kansas City, Missouri (Reuters) - A violent Halloween storm swept from the U.S. Gulf Coast up to the eastern Great Lakes killing at least four people, three in Texas and one in Tennessee, and contributed to the overturning of a school bus in a rain-swollen creek in Kansas.

Strong winds and heavy rain lashed the region, and wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour were still being forecast for Friday afternoon in some regions.

The National Weather Service said it received 230 reports of high winds across 12 states from Louisiana to Pennsylvania, and reports of tornadoes in Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky and Illinois, although none did major damage.

In Nashville, a 9-year-old boy was electrocuted by a downed power line, according to Metro Nashville Police.

"It has not been determined exactly how he contacted the wire, which was knocked down by a large tree limb during high winds," police said in a statement. Local television stations reported he was on his bike when he made contact with the wire.

Fallen power lines littered Tennessee in the wake of 40 to 50 mph winds, said Scott Unger of the National Weather Service in Nashville. Thousands lost power, officials said.

A Halloween death in Tennessee was not related to the weather. A 4-year-old boy in White Pine, Tennessee, was struck by the family van while he was out trick-or-treating, according to local media reports. He apparently jumped from the side door of the van and was run over by a back wheel and killed.

Many towns and cities in the path of the storm had postponed trick-or-treating.

Walmart kicks off online holiday shopping deals

Put away the pumpkins and bring out the stockings.

Walmart declared the holiday shopping season open by kicking off a selection of online deals Friday, nearly a month ahead of its usual Thanksgiving schedule. The offers included discounts on electronics and toys usually reserved for Black Friday. A 42-inch JVC television for $300 had sold out online by 10 a.m.

Walmart’s move is the latest sign that retailers are scrambling to make the most of a shortened holiday season through early promotions and aggressive marketing. There are six fewer shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas than last year.

Retailers are also responding to consumers’ desires to start holiday shopping earlier, said Alison Paul, vice chairman at Deloitte, a consulting company.

The company’s 2013 holiday survey found that the share of Americans who said they expect to finish shopping in November was five percentage points higher than last year. And most of those surveyed said they will be looking for online deals.

For the first time in 15 years, the Internet was listed as the top destination for holiday shopping, edging out discount retailers, Paul said. That is another reason retailers are promoting their deals earlier this season, she said.

“We’re raising the stakes,” Wal-Mart spokesman Ravi Jariwala said. The retailer chose Nov. 1 to kick off its holiday campaign, he said, because Walmart.com usually experiences “a spike” in online traffic the day after Halloween.

Hey, where did they go?

I am not a retailer, but I can see why they are starting Christmas early this year ..... last year Black Friday was on the 23rd, this year, the 28th. Retailers lose almost a week of Christmas shopping days. That is a lot of days. Just think what a Walmart loses those five days, and I imagine some of those are "choice" days. That is a lot of days for anyone needing those Christmas sopping days to lose, and you can never made them up, they are gone forever. 

Thanksgiving is on the 28th, Black Friday is the 29th, who started that tradition, anyway?

LAX shooting

A Transportation Security Administration agent was killed and several more people wounded when a gunman opened fire on Friday morning at Los Angeles International Airport.

The FBI has identified the shooting suspect as 23-year-old Paul Ciancia. According to law enforcement officials, Ciancia was apprehended on the scene after opening fire at an airport security checkpoint. He reportedly suffered a non-lethal gunshot wound and is being treated in a local hospital.

Personal details about Ciancia are still emerging. According to public records obtained by Yahoo News, Ciancia has a known address in Pennsville, N.J., about 15 miles from Wilmington, Del. The AP said Ciancia had contacted his brother by text message on Friday saying he was considering suicide. Additional reports indicate when Ciancia was detained by law enforcement he was carrying literature critical of the federal government and the TSA. Ciancia's father reached out to law enforcement officials in New Jersey who subsequently reached out to their counterparts in Los Angeles. Police in Los Angeles reportedly made an unsuccessful attempt to make contact with Ciancia before the shooting took place.

Ciancia entered LAX on Friday wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a handwritten note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs," an official, who was briefed on the investigation and requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, told the AP.

The TSA confirmed the death of the officer in a statement obtained by Yahoo News: "Earlier this morning, a shooting occurred at Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport. Multiple Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) were shot, one fatally. Additional details will be addressed by the FBI and local law enforcement who are investigating the shooting."

A spokesperson for the American Federation of Government Employees told Yahoo News that it is the first time a TSA officer has been killed in the line of duty. According to the spokesperson, the TSA officer was a "behavior detection officer" who was charged with spotting suspicious behavior in the airport.

LAX Shooting Suspect from South Jersey

The man suspected of trying to shoot his way past a security checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, killing a TSA officer and wounding two other people, is originally from South Jersey.

Paul Ciancia, 23, grew up in Pennsville, in Salem County, according to the town's police chief. He was wounded in a shootout with police and was taken into custody.

Ciancia's parents and brother still live in Pennsville, officials said.

The shooter’s brother got a text message from Ciancia Friday saying he was thinking about taking his life.

A law enforcement official told the AP that the suspect was wearing fatigues and carrying a bag containing a hand-written note that said he "wanted to kill TSA and pigs."

The official was briefed at LAX on the investigation and requested anonymity because was he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Big "Sweet"

I think I have posted on him before. I watched him play basketball right after WWII when Wright Patterson Air Force Base had a great basketball team of AF personnel. When they got discharged, some of them stayed around Dayton, and Dave Margolis, owned a clothing store, the Metropolitan, and sponsored some of them as a basketball team. It was not as organized in those days, no NBA, a lot of "industrial ball" with teams sponsored by big corps. Caterpillar Tractors, Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, a lot of good teams.

I spent many an afternoon at the old Coliseum at the Fairgrounds in Dayton, watching many of those teams. The Mets had one standout player, Nathanial "Sweetwater" Clifton. A couple of things are not mentioned in this profile. His time with the Mets, late 40's, and some of his career with the Cleveland Indians.

I don't think he played too long with them, one incident I do remember though. He went from the Dayton Indians to the Cleveland Indians for a brief time. One game in Cleveland had Hank Greenberg in the stands. Sweet hit one real long ball over the fence, Greenberg said it was the longest home run he had ever seen, and that was something coming from him.

I saw Sweet play a few times. They used to practice at the Coliseum, as did my brother's high school team when they were getting ready for a tournament. I remember going down to watch the activities and was introduced to "Big Sweet." His hands were huge, about twice the size of mine.

I think he spent some time with the Globetrotters also.I saw him play a few games with the Dayton Indians, an Indian farm club.

The Mets had a good team, Sonny Boswell and Sweet, cannot remember any other names, some went on to the NBA

Secret of Google's SF barge discovered

Call off the Hardy Boys. The mystery of Google's barge has apparently been solved.

The barge, currently floating near San Francisco in a haze of intrigue, will be used to market the tech giant's Google Glass and other gizmos, KPIX-5 reported.

Using shipping containers as buildings, the barge will feature luxury showrooms and a "party deck." Its progress has been overseen by co-founder Sergey Brin. Eat your heart out, Apple stores.

The party deck up top will have "bars, lanais and other comforts so Google can fete its upscale customers."

Google, which is headquartered south of San Francisco in Mountain View, Calif., has been working on the barge project for more than a year, according to KPIX.

So, what does it look like? There are no interior photos yet (sheesh, not even a Google Earth shot of the roof?), but a KPIX source described the barge as having three floors that will serve as "dazzling showrooms." Based on the source's descriptions (chrome features and floor lighting), the top floor sounds a bit like a disco. Somebody get a YouTube of Brin torching the dance floor, please.

The barge's buildings can also apparently be reconfigured in any number of ways.

TSA agent reportedly killed in LAX shooting, multiple injuries reported

A Transportation Security Administration agent was reportedly killed and several more people wounded when a gunman opened fire Friday morning at Los Angeles International Airport.

“They tracked the individual through the airport and engaged him in gunfire in Terminal 3 and were able to successfully take him into custody,” LAX Airport Police Chief Patrick Gannon said at a press conference. “We believe, at this point, that there was a lone shooter. That he was the only person armed in this incident.”

Jim Featherstone, acting Los Angeles Fire Chief, added that officials have treated seven patients and transported six to area hospitals.

FBI Agent David Bowdich said that authorities do not believe there are any other potential suspects on the scene. "As we stand right now, there is only one individual we know of as the active shooter," Gannon added.

NBC News and ABC News are reporting that one TSA agent was killed in the incident and that a second agent was wounded in the leg. A third individual, possibly the gunman, also was reportedly injured. The suspect is in custody, according to reports; however, authorities declined to provide any information on the identities or conditions of those wounded, and they provided no information on the condition of the shooter.

Replace Biden with Hillary? No way, White House says

Did President Barack Obama’s top reelection campaign officials consider replacing Vice President Joe Biden with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton? Not seriously, the White House insisted on Friday.

“What I can tell you without a doubt is that the president never considered that, and had anyone brought that idea to him he would have laughed it out of the room,” press secretary Jay Carney told reporters.

The Hillary-for-Biden swap talk is one of the more eye-popping claims in the campaign-centered “Double Down: Game Change 2012.” The book contends that senior strategists for the president's re-election campaign conducted extensive focus-group tests and polling on the matter in late 2011 when it seemed the president risked losing his bid for a second term.

“Campaigns, and pollsters as part of campaigns, test a lot of things,” Carney insisted. “I mean, they poll and focus-group on what you have for breakfast.”

Carney, a former spokesman for the vice president, said Biden “has been an asset to this president in two campaigns and throughout five years of this administration.”

“Whether it was handling the implementation of the Recovery Act, handling the very sensitive and important portfolio of Iraq in the first term or his key role in working with Congress on some very important negotiations, Joe Biden has been an excellent partner, in the president's view," Carney said.

The Obama team also leaned on Biden as a key political surrogate. During both the 2008 and 2012 campaigns, Biden was often deployed to swing states to speak to white working class voters who were less receptive to Obama himself.

“And then as a candidate, I think if you look at the role he played in 2012 and you look at the job he did in his debate, I think there is little doubt that he was an enormous asset to the entire cause and enterprise,” Carney added. “if you look back at 2012 and you look at that moment in the campaign when the vice president had his debate, it was a key moment. And Joe Biden delivered of the ticket. I think there's no question about that.”

TSA employee shot at LAX Terminal 3 checkpoint

LOS ANGELES — Several people, including a TSA employee, was shot Friday at a checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport Terminal 3 in what police call a "multi-patient incident."

The gunman -- apparently still at large -- was wounded in the incident, the Los Angeles Times reports.

USA TODAY's Kevin Johnson quotes a federal law enforcement official as saying that less than five victims were believed to be involved.

CNN reports that a gunman aproached a checkpoint at the terminal and opened fire. Airport officials confirm the incident began at 9:30 a.m. PT.

Witness Brian Keech said he heard "about a dozen gunshots" from inside the security gate at Terminal 3, which servesAllegiant Air, Frontier, JetBlue, Spirit, Virgin America and other airlines.

Police described the suspect as a male dressed in a "black hoodie" and black jeans.

At one point police speaking to dispatchers said they had a "possible suspect" in custody.
