8:30 12/30 .. Been home a few hours. As many of you know, I have a BIG Kidney Stone on my left side. Going to OSU on 1/23 for further consultation. Sunday evening, after a busy day, I had a rather severe pain in my lower RIGHT abdomen.
Went to the ER, did the Cat scan, I have an even LARGER ONE on the right side. On my left side I have something plastic hanging out of my side. Today, Dr. Stallworth put a shunt in my right side, nothing sticking out, not sure how it works. So, I now have Shunts on both sides, two LARGE Kidney stones, and still have to wait till the 23rd to get any more done. I won't go in to any more detail on how it all works, how some of my bodily functions work, but, you can get in touch with me about every two hours, I will be awake.
A little pain on the right side, hopefully it will go away. Melissa has kept an eye on Marilyn and driven us around. Still more concerned about Marilyn's health than mine. Still very impressed with LMH, all their staff and their service. Well, they did let me lay there in the ER, from 8 to 9 in pain for a couple of hours.
Then I got a shot..... I loved that one ..... I visited many places around the country and the world ..... I floated over a few of you ... didn't want to bother you, though. Hope all is well till the 23rd .... thanks for concern and prayers ... and if you didn't pray for me, why not? You can start in now practicing for the 23rd, I have a hunch I will need all I can get then

NYPD prepares for Wenjian Liu, Rafael Ramos funerals to be attended by up to 25,000 U.S., Canada police, authorities say
The task of planning and coordinating the massive funerals has fallen on the NYPD's ceremonial unit, a special squad of officers led by Lt. Tony Giorgio.
The unit, which handles arrangements for officers and city officials, has grown from less than a handful of staffers 25 years ago to 15 officers today. Each precinct contributes one officer to the special squad to serve as pallbearers.
Eight of them, culled from various precincts, will lift and carry the coffins at the funerals and cemeteries. Giorgio, a licensed funeral director, is schooled in the delicate art of carrying coffins at shoulder height -- the way Julius Caesar was carried after his death.
Immediately after Liu and Ramos were fatally shot in an ambush Saturday in Brooklyn, Giorgio and his staff began holding a series of meetings to sort out the enormous logistics, he said.
"It is a production," said Giorgio, 53, a 32-year veteran of the force who lived for a time in Merrick.
Department protocols aside, he stressed that the wishes of the Liu and Ramos families are the main focus. "We are there for them," he said.
The Pentecostal service for Ramos is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Christ Tabernacle Church in Glendale, with interment at Cypress Hill Cemetery on the Queens-Brooklyn border.
Services for Liu will be in keeping with his Asian heritage and will be scheduled pending the arrival of relatives from China, Giorgio said.
Giorgio studied funeral traditions for different faiths and cultures in mortuary school at what was then SUNY Farmingdale. That training has come in handy as the department grows more ethnically diverse and the ceremonial unit is charged with coordinating funerals for a broad array of faiths and traditions.
Giorgio was highly visible leading the pallbearers during the February 2013 funeral for former Mayor Edward Koch at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan.
With huge crowds expected for the Liu and Ramos funerals, Giorgio said the department is coordinating road closings, opening up emergency lanes and arranging for EMS units if mourners become ill or overcome with grief.
Though he has handled hundreds of police funerals, Saturday's slayings jolted Giorgio.
He said, "These two officers were assassinated because of who they were."

Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth said the single-story ranch-style house was destroyed and the site was very hot and unstable some six hours after the blaze was reported just after 4 a.m. He said firefighters were sifting through the smoldering debris to try to locate the four missing people.
"The house is totally destroyed," Stanforth said.
He said family members are being informed of what he called "just a tragic, tragic" fire. He didn't have the ages of the children who were spending Christmas night at their grandmother's house.
"To lose three children and a grandparent, it's devastating to the family," Stanforth told The Associated Press by telephone. "The fact that it's the holidays makes it even worse for the community."
County and local fire departments are at the scene with the state fire marshal's investigators near Washington Court House some 40 miles southwest of Columbus. There was no immediate word on what might have caused the blaze.

Neither has come true, yet. I think Jim has another week of employment in San Francisco, but, what then. Would you rather coach in the NFL or at your old college? Avid fans and alums would like him to take over at Michigan. They apparently have made him an attractive offer, similar to the one I predicted ... not sure about the Pope thing.
Not financially, but it would be a step down for him to head back to Ann Arbor, and, expectations would be HIGH for him. With what they have, and will have, his chance to really turn the program around, are limited, to say the least. He knows that the same people who are salivating to get him back, would also, if the winning did not start, be the first in line to tar and feather him.
He seems to possess all the qualifications to be a Program Turner ... he is an ex player, a popular QB, successful, and, he seems to be a Pure Michigander ..

Key N. Korean websites back online after shutdown
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Key North Korean websites were back online Tuesday after a nearly 10-hour shutdown that followed a U.S. vow to respond to a crippling cyberattack on Sony Pictures that Washington blames on Pyongyang.
It wasn't immediately clear what caused the Internet stoppage in one of the least-wired and poorest countries in the world, but outside experts said it could be anything from a cyberattack to a simple power failure. The White House and the State Department declined to say whether the U.S. government was responsible.
Even if a cyberattack had caused the shutdown, analysts said, it would largely be symbolic since only a tiny number of North Koreans are allowed on the Internet — a fraction of Pyongyang's staunchly loyal elite, as well as foreigners.
Though it denies responsibility for the Sony hack, North Korea's government has called it a "righteous deed" and made clear its fury over Sony's film "The Interview," a comedy that depicts the assassination of the North's authoritarian leader, Kim Jong Un, the head of a 1.2 million-man army and the focus of an intense cult of personality.
South Korean officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because of office rules, said the North's official Korean Central News Agency and the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, which are the main channels for official North Korean news, had both gone down. But the websites were back up later Tuesday. Among the posts glorifying the ruling Kim family included one about Kim Jong Un visiting a catfish farm.
U.S. computer experts described the Internet outage in the North as sweeping and progressively worse. Jim Cowie, chief scientist at Dyn Research, an Internet performance company, said in an online post that the North came back online after a 9 ½-hour outage.
Possible causes for the shutdown include an external attack on its fragile network or even just power problems, Cowie wrote. But, he added, "We can only guess."

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — President Barack Obama is "recklessly" spreading rumors of a Pyongyang-orchestrated cyberattack of Sony Pictures, North Korea says, as it warns of strikes against the White House, Pentagon and "the whole U.S. mainland, that cesspool of terrorism."
Such rhetoric is routine from North Korea's massive propaganda machine during times of high tension with Washington. But a long statement from the powerful National Defense Commission late Sunday also underscores Pyongyang's sensitivity at a movie whose plot focuses on the assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un, who is the beneficiary of a decades-long cult of personality built around his family dynasty.
The U.S. blames North Korea for the cyberattack that escalated to threats of terror attacks against U.S. movie theaters and caused Sony to cancel "The Interview's" release.
Obama, who promised to respond "proportionately" to the attack, told CNN's "State of the Union" in an interview broadcast Sunday that Washington is reviewing whether to put North Korea back on its list of state sponsors of terrorism

I think, our "government" still things that we are that great nation that won WWII. I do not know the actual truth, but, in my opinion, are Navy is "rusting" away, so the Army must be in the same shape. North Korea obviously has a large body of Armed Forces, rumored to not have the latest, up to date, equipment, but I doubt that we really know. I think that We think we are still Number One, when, in fact, we may not be. And then, think of "our" leadership, their experience. Right now, as this is unraveling, he is in Hawaii, on vacation, playing golf. Policemen are being assassinated, blacks are killing whites, whites are killing blacks .... none of which is spoiling his Christmas Vacation, a holiday that I doubt he actually celebrates ..... Lord, help us aall.

New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, speaking at a press conference Saturday night, confirmed the identity of the shooter as 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley.
He identified the two slain cops as partners Wenjian Liu and Raphael Ramos.
Brinsley posted a sinister message on Instagram earlier Saturday along with an image of a silver handgun and hashtags invoking the names of Michael Brown and Eric Garner after reportedly shooting and wounding a former girlfriend in Baltimore.
According to Baltimore police, Brinsley shot and wounded a former girlfriend there around 5:45 a.m. Saturday before traveling to Brooklyn, Bratton said. The woman's mother contacted Baltimore police after she noticed Brinsley's comments on Instagram.
Baltimore police faxed a bulletin describing Brinsley to NYPD headquarters that arrived at 2:45 p.m., Bratton said, at almost the exact moment Brinsley opened fire on Liu and Ramos. Bratton said the ambush was at 2:47 p.m. in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.
Bratton said according to a witness, Brinsley took a shooting stance on the passenger side of the police cruiser and fired several times striking both officers in the head. The pair, he said, never had the chance to draw their own weapons and may never have seen their assailant.
“Both officers paid the ultimate sacrifice today,” Bratton said.

An NYPD spokesman confirmed to Fox News that two officers were shot in the incident and were immediately moved to a nearby hospital. Police later told The Associated Press that both officers died from their injuries..
The New York Post reported that both officers were shot in the head at point-blank range.

It had to be Walmart ....
She was standing at the steering wheel, looking at me, and I wanted to impress upon her that she must remain there. I walked to the curb backward,
Pointing my finger at the car and saying emphatically, "Now you stay. Do you hear me?" Stay! Stay!"
The driver of a nearby car, a pretty blonde young lady, gave me a strange look and said,
"Why don't you just put it in park?"
"Tis more blessed ................."
What made this operation especially unusual was the man behind it: a fellow in a red hat -- known to these men only as "Secret Santa."
Every year this anonymous, wealthy businessman gives out about a hundred thousand dollars worth of hundred dollar bills to random strangers. But this year, instead of doing it all himself, he deputized these deputies to give away much of it.
"Let's start with a thousand," Secret Santa said as he gave the deputies the money.
And so, armed to the teeth with Benjamins, the officers went out to do Santa's bidding. They specifically went after people they thought would appreciate it most. Cars driving while dented -- or out on Bondo -- were likely targets.
"Merry Christmas," a deputy said while handing money to a driver.
"You're kidding. Oh my God, no," answered the driver in disbelief.
Most people weren't just blown away -- most people were moved to tears. Their reactions were a combination of really needing the money and being caught off guard.
We saw Jessica Rodriguez, a mother of three, get pulled over. While the deputy walked to her car, Rodriguez talked to someone on her cell phone to tell them she'd been pulled over for "no cause."
"How you doing, m'am?" the deputy asked her.
"I'm good until you pulled me over," she answered.
"Okay, well, on behalf of Secret Santa, he wants you to have this, OK?" the deputy said as he handed her money.
Rodriguez told the deputy he saved her Christmas.
"I wasn't going to be able to get my kids anything," she told him.
"Well, I hope you may be able to get your kids something with it," he said.
As always, creating moments like that is the main mission here. But this year "Secret Santa" also had a secret agenda.
"What do you want the officers to get out of this?" I asked him.
"Joy," he answered. "You know, as tough as they are they have hearts that are bigger than the world."
Let's face it, it hasn't been a good year for law enforcement -- but for the vast majority of decent officers who will never make headlines -- Secret Santa offered this gift.
A chance to be bearer of good news for a change, a chance to really help the homeless, to thank the law-abiders, to see hands up in celebration and then be assaulted in the best possible way.
There were a lot of hugs. Our body cameras took a real beating, but it was worth it -- just to see people trust again and to see cops surrender.

Jessie Maud Shannon Dooley
December 18 was always a BIG day in our family, the day we put up the tree, on Mom's birthday. On Brown Street, it meant a trip to that gigantic attic and bring all the tree trimmings down to the living room. It took many trips.
The day started with Dad taking the family in the Packard Clipper, the one I remember, out to the Fairgrounds and under the bleacher section they sold trees. We had high ceilings on Brown Street, but the tree we picked always had to be "shortened."
First, the lights, then the balls and other hanging ornaments, then the tinsel and other garlands, then the icicles .... NO CLUMPS .... one at a time, NO THROWING. Last, Mom did her "Fairyland" ... Dad had made a small 4" white picket fence to go around the tree. It had a front gate, and a larger one going to the barnyard. Different "figures" were placed at each post, Cotton for the snow, mirrors for ponds, a village, roads ..... I spent many hours "visiting" that village.
Jessie loved her family and friends. Guests soon became friends. A Doctor friend from Columbus drove to Newark on one occasion to visit them. He had Fred Taylor, legendary Ohio State basketball coach with him. Fred ended up eating three pieces of her apple pie as they all sat and talked. That's the way that Mom was.
She was born in 1897. She was a great Mother, Wife, not just a Wife, a Doctors Wife, there is a difference, took a lot of tolerance ... his Medical Practice came first, I know she realized that.
I remember once, old Doc Werner, recommended a shot of whiskey each day to east high blood pressure. She NEVER drank, we had too disguise it with juice, etc, she only did it one day. She was a PK, a Preachers Kid, her Dad, a Bishop in the old UB Church. She lived her life accordingly. Church was a regular part of our lives.
I heard her use the word .... "bastard" ..... one time .... and it related to story she told of how many of them seemed to be on the highway when Dad drove.
I regret that I did not get to spend more time with her, quality time, time just talking, we really never just .... sat and talked.
Many fond memories, today, of Jessie Dooley ....

.DAH - Feds Link Hack to North Korea as Sony Cancels 'The Interview' Release
Did those responsible for making this film think it would be received well by North Korea. Previous to this film they wanted to do "Marin L. King. Exposed" .... then .... "Exposing Nancy Pelosi" .... and another one they gave up on .... "Obama, Black, Gay and an Alien" .... "The money means nothing to us, we just feel the message should get out," a Sony spokesman stated.
NEW YORK (AP) — Under the threat of terrorist attacks from hackers and with the nation’s largest multiplex chains pulling the film from its screens, Sony Pictures Entertainment took the unprecedented step of canceling the Dec. 25 release of the “The Interview.”
The cancellation, announced Wednesday, was a startling blow to the Hollywood studio that has been shaken by hacker leaks and intimidation over the last several weeks by an anonymous group calling itself Guardians of Peace.
A U.S. official said Wednesday that federal investigators have now connected the Sony hacking to North Korea and are expected to make an announcement in the near future. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to openly discuss an ongoing criminal case.
Sony said it was canceling “The Interview” release “in light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film.” The studio has also halted DVD and VOD release plans, a development from later in the day.
The studio said it respected and shared in exhibitors’ concerns.
"We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public," read the statement. "We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

Why did we not hear about this sooner .... and more of it ....
Emily J.T. Perez, a determined 23-year-old from Prince George's County, rose to the top of her high school class and then became the first minority female command sergeant in the history of the U.S. Military Academy.
Now she has another distinction. The second lieutenant was buried Tuesday at the academy, the first female graduate of West Point to die in Iraq. Perez, a platoon leader, was killed while patrolling southern Iraq near Najaf on Sept. 12 when a roadside bomb exploded under her Humvee.
And at the service on the high bluffs along the Hudson River, her former fellow cadets, the younger women who looked up to Perez and now are preparing to follow her path, were still learning from her.
"The fact that she's died -- it makes what's going on in the Middle [East] . . . so much more real. I mean, here at West Point, it's kind of like Camelot, you know -- everything just seems to work," Sylvia Amegashie, 21, of Woodbridge, co-captain of West Point's track team, said as she stood on the cemetery grass, holding back tears. "What happened to her, being out there in Iraq, it's real. Her death really makes everything seem more like it's going to happen."
"For me, yeah, like, it's just an eye-opener," agreed Meghan Venable-Thomas, 21, a senior who also ran track and sang in the choir with Perez, who graduated last year. "She was like a little superwoman . . . so full of energy and life, and she was just willing to do anything."
Perez was born into a military family in Heidelberg, Germany, and moved to Fort Washington in 1998. A woman repeatedly described as focused, tenacious and passionate, she was an avid reader from a young age and eventually finished near the top of her class at Oxon Hill High School. From early on, she wanted to be a soldier, her friends recalled, and she became wing commander of Junior ROTC at Oxon Hill.
"She was the cream of the crop," said Nathaniel Laney, Perez's high school track coach and now assistant principal at Oxon Hill. "This wasn't some average Joe."

DEMARIO BAILEY, 15, FATALLY SHOT DURING ROBBERY ATTEMPT, POLICE SAY SUSPECTS IN CUSTODY
CHICAGO (WLS) -- This, too, is tragic ........... Where are all the activists, Sharpton, etc.,
Police are questioning persons of interest in connection with a shooting that left a 15-year-old boy dead during an apparent robbery attempt on the city's South Side.
Demario Bailey was shot and killed in front of his identical twin brother. Family members say the teen was shot because he would not give up his coat to several people trying to rob him. At least two people were custody Saturday night.
Bailey was a student at Johnson College Prep. One of his junior varsity basketball coaches says he's an angel gone too soon. "One of the best kids in our school," said coach Robin Callahan. "Very disciplined. No problems, fun kids. Always a smile on they face. If you wanted a kid, that was one of the kids that you wanted."
Bailey was walking down the sidewalk with his brother near 63rd and State just after 12:30 p.m. Saturday when four men came up and tried to rob him. Police say at some point one of them allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Bailey in the chest.
Community activist Andrew Holmes says there's a $1,000 reward for anyone with information on the shooting.
"That coat, if you were trying to steal that coat wasn't worth it," Holmes said. "Was it worth you stealing this man's coat, was it worth you stealing his money, was it worth it taking his life? Because you just gave up your life."
According to family, Bailey was only three days away from his 16th birthday.
His coach and school are now devastated by his death.
"Our kids work so hard and we do so many things for them to keep them off the street, to keep them out of trouble," Callahan said. "For something like this to happen it not even just tears the school apart, it tears the community apart. "
The principal released a statement Saturday night calling for Martial Law on the South Side, saying this killing violence needs to stop.
Police are still searching for at least two other people. No charges have been filed against the two suspects in custody.
This is what is wrong with our society. This young man of promise killed in front of his twin brother. We have become a nation of people that reward criminals with long government stays in prison. Enough is Enough we need to bring back the death penatly. These cowards that killed a child. We are the so called "leaders" Rev. Al, Farakhan, Corey Brooks, Meeks, Braizer etc.... Mentorship... values are all missing in our black communities. ENOUGH! We are becoming a national joke. We speak about injustices but continue to kill our own. We can advance because we are like crabs in a barrel.
As a mother of two beauty black children I fear for their lives not by the police but their own people.
To the family of this young man may God be with you and provide you strength during this difficult time. God never gives us too much to bear. Remember the time you had with him have joy in knowing that he is with God now. Hug his twin and give him strength to go on without his brother. God bless this family. Lord give them justice in an unjust world. Have mercy on that family. Lead them to peace and joy. Amen!
One I remember ................
Between Kidney Stones, Afib and old age, we are "skirting" Christmas this year, so have been reflecting on some memories of past years.
One that comes to mind involved me being Santa for our local Merchants Association. I was old and whited haired, so I got the job, and, the suit fit. Dave Longaberger of basket fame had purchased a local theater, and let us use the entrance to set up our Santaland.
I think I was a good Santa, I really never grew up, so I easily related to the kids. I did a deep Santa voice, and was perceptive enough to use some obvious clues. I would see someone in the family wearing a sweatshirt, let's say from Licking Valley ..... "Hi Bobby" .... the parents would give the child's name to my elf, who would write the name on a small blackboard, so I knew each ones name. "Hi Bobby ... let's see, ...... do you still go to Valley?" ... Eyes would lite up a bit ..... "How'd he know that?"
I got lucky a few times too. "Didn't I bring you a sled last year, you had your tree over in the corner there, and as I recall, I put it under the tree there, and some other presents."
One Mother that we knew, her kids were getting a little older ..... at that age, where .... well, she fed me some information, thought her daughter was a little young to be getting serious about some young boy. When they entered the theater, I casually waved at them, "Hi Sarah, Hi Billy" .... and went on talking with the child on my lap. I saw their expressions, a little awed that I waved and knew their names. When Sarah got on my lap .... well, she was awed ..... Santa knew things that, well, only Santa would know. Her Mom told me later, as they were walking out Sarah looked up at her and said, "Now that was the real Santa Claus."
One evening, Santa was getting ready to head home, it was cold and snowy out, and young girl in a tee shirt and jeans came in, carrying a maybe 2 or 3 year old, who was also sparsely dressed. They obviously had little. Nice young Mother, cute little girl. Well, before they left, I had elves helping me that night. One elf had, in her car, a Christmas gift for her Granddaughter, a nice Winter coat, which suddenly appeared. Others brought items in, the Mother also received a coat, one that an elf had been wearing. A nearby drug store was open, diapers appeared and other clothes appeared, some toys.
Mom and baby left loaded down, tears flowing from everyone. I am sure that all involved remember that incident each year, Santa and his Elves, did good stuff that night ....................

Long, but a nice read ...........
The old man sat in his gas station on a cold Christmas Eve. He hadn't been anywhere in years since his wife had passed away. It was just another day to him. He didn't hate Christmas, just couldn't find a reason to celebrate. He was sitting there looking at the snow that had been falling for the last hour and wondering what it was all about when the door opened and a homeless man stepped through.
Instead of throwing the man out, Old George as he was known by his customers, told the man to come and sit by the heater and warm up. "Thank you, but I don't mean to intrude," said the stranger. "I see you're busy, I'll just go." "Not without something hot in your belly." George said. He turned and opened a wide mouth Thermos and handed it to the stranger. "It ain't much, but it's hot and tasty. Stew ... Made it myself. When you're done, there's coffee and it's fresh."
Just at that moment he heard the "ding" of the driveway bell. "Excuse me, be right back," George said. There in the driveway was an old '53 Chevy. Steam was rolling out of the front. The driver was panicked. "Mister can you help me!" said the driver, with a deep Spanish accent. "My wife is with child and my car is broken." George opened the hood. It was bad. The block looked cracked from the cold, the car was dead. "You ain't going in this thing," George said as he turned away.
"But Mister, please help ..." The door of the office closed behind George as he went inside. He went to the office wall and got the keys to his old truck, and went back outside. He walked around the building, opened the garage, started the truck and drove it around to where the couple was waiting. "Here, take my truck," he said. "She ain't the best thing you ever looked at, but she runs real good."
George helped put the woman in the truck and watched as it sped off into the night. He turned and walked back inside the office. "Glad I gave 'em the truck, their tires were shot too. That 'ol truck has brand new ." George thought he was talking to the stranger, but the man had gone. The Thermos was on the desk, empty, with a used coffee cup beside it. "Well, at least he got something in his belly," George thought.
George went back outside to see if the old Chevy would start. It cranked slowly, but it started. He pulled it into the garage where the truck had been. He thought he would tinker with it for something to do. Christmas Eve meant no customers. He discovered the block hadn't cracked, it was just the bottom hose on the radiator. "Well, shoot, I can fix this," he said to himself. So he put a new one on.
"Those tires ain't gonna get 'em through the winter either." He took the snow treads off of his wife's old Lincoln. They were like new and he wasn't going to drive the car anyway.
As he was working, he heard shots being fired. He ran outside and beside a police car an officer lay on the cold ground. Bleeding from the left shoulder, the officer moaned, "Please help me."
George helped the officer inside as he remembered the training he had received in the Army as a medic. He knew the wound needed attention. "Pressure to stop the bleeding," he thought. The uniform company had been there that morning and had left clean shop towels. He used those and duct tape to bind the wound. "Hey, they say duct tape can fix anythin'," he said, trying to make the policeman feel at ease.
"Something for pain," George thought. All he had was the pills he used for his back. "These ought to work." He put some water in a cup and gave the policeman the pills. "You hang in there, I'm going to get you an ambulance."
The phone was dead. "Maybe I can get one of your buddies on that there talk box out in your car." He went out only to find that a bullet had gone into the dashboard destroying the two way radio.
He went back in to find the policeman sitting up. "Thanks," said the officer. "You could have left me there. The guy that shot me is still in the area."
George sat down beside him, "I would never leave an injured man in the Army and I ain't gonna leave you." George pulled back the bandage to check for bleeding. "Looks worse than what it is. Bullet passed right through 'ya. Good thing it missed the important stuff though. I think with time your gonna be right as rain."
George got up and poured a cup of coffee. "How do you take it?" he asked. "None for me," said the officer. "Oh, yer gonna drink this. Best in the city. Too bad I ain't got no donuts." The officer laughed and winced at the same time.
The front door of the office flew open. In burst a young man with a gun. "Give me all your cash! Do it now!" the young man yelled. His hand was shaking and George could tell that he had never done anything like this before. "That's the guy that shot me!" exclaimed the officer.
"Son, why are you doing this?" asked George, "You need to put the cannon away. Somebody else might get hurt."
The young man was confused. "Shut up old man, or I'll shoot you, too. Now give me the cash!"
The cop was reaching for his gun. "Put that thing away," George said to the cop, "we got one too many in here now."
He turned his attention to the young man. "Son, it's Christmas Eve. If you need money, well then, here. It ain't much but it's all I got. Now put that pea shooter away."
George pulled $150 out of his pocket and handed it to the young man, reaching for the barrel of the gun at the same time. The young man released his grip on the gun, fell to his knees and began to cry. "I'm not very good at this am I? All I wanted was to buy something for my wife and son," he went on. "I've lost my job, my rent is due, my car got repossessed last week."
George handed the gun to the cop. "Son, we all get in a bit of squeeze now and then. The road gets hard sometimes, but we make it through the best we can."
He got the young man to his feet, and sat him down on a chair across from the cop. "Sometimes we do stupid things." George handed the young man a cup of coffee. "Bein' stupid is one of the things that makes us human. Comin' in here with a gun ain't the answer. Now sit there and get warm and we'll sort this thing out."
The young man had stopped crying. He looked over to the cop. "Sorry I shot you. It just went off. I'm sorry officer." "Shut up and drink your coffee " the cop said. George could hear the sounds of sirens outside. A police car and an ambulance skidded to a halt. Two cops came through the door, guns drawn. "Chuck! You ok?" one of the cops asked the wounded officer.
"Not bad for a guy who took a bullet. How did you find me?"
"GPS locator in the car. Best thing since sliced bread. Who did this?" the other cop asked as he approached the young man.
Chuck answered him, "I don't know. The guy ran off into the dark. Just dropped his gun and ran."
George and the young man both looked puzzled at each other.
"That guy work here?" the wounded cop continued. "Yep," George said, "just hired him this morning. Boy lost his job."
The paramedics came in and loaded Chuck onto the stretcher. The young man leaned over the wounded cop and whispered, "Why?"
Chuck just said, "Merry Christmas boy ... and you too, George, and thanks for everything."
"Well, looks like you got one doozy of a break there. That ought to solve some of your problems."
George went into the back room and came out with a box. He pulled out a ring box. "Here you go, something for the little woman. I don't think Martha would mind. She said it would come in handy some day."
The young man looked inside to see the biggest diamond ring he ever saw. "I can't take this," said the young man. "It means something to you."
"And now it means something to you," replied George. "I got my memories. That's all I need."
George reached into the box again. An airplane, a car and a truck appeared next. They were toys that the oil company had left for him to sell. "Here's something for that little man of yours."
The young man began to cry again as he handed back the $150 that the old man had handed him earlier.
"And what are you supposed to buy Christmas dinner with? You keep that too," George said. "Now git home to your family."
The young man turned with tears streaming down his face. "I'll be here in the morning for work, if that job offer is still good."
"Nope. I'm closed Christmas day," George said. "See ya the day after."
George turned around to find that the stranger had returned. "Where'd you come from? I thought you left?"
"I have been here. I have always been here," said the stranger. "You say you don't celebrate Christmas. Why?"
"Well, after my wife passed away, I just couldn't see what all the bother was. Puttin' up a tree and all seemed a waste of a good pine tree. Bakin' cookies like I used to with Martha just wasn't the same by myself and besides I was gettin' a little chubby."
The stranger put his hand on George's shoulder. "But you do celebrate the holiday, George. You gave me food and drink and warmed me when I was cold and hungry. The woman with child will bear a son and he will become a great doctor.
The policeman you helped will go on to save 19 people from being killed by terrorists. The young man who tried to rob you will make you a rich man and not take any for himself. "That is the spirit of the season and you keep it as good as any man."
George was taken aback by all this stranger had said. "And how do you know all this?" asked the old man.
"Trust me, George. I have the inside track on this sort of thing. And when your days are done you will be with Martha again."
The stranger moved toward the door. "If you will excuse me, George, I have to go now. I have to go home where there is a big celebration planned."
George watched as the old leather jacket and the torn pants that the stranger was wearing turned into a white robe. A golden light began to fill the room.
"You see, George ... it's My birthday. Merry Christmas."
George fell to his knees and replied, "Happy Birthday, Lord Jesus"

Johnny Cleveland - Today is his day ...
Johnny Football, now Johnny Cleveland, Johnny Manzeil, is going to start for the Cleveland Browns.
He is just a kid, a Quarterback, a college sensation, just a football player, wo he is going to start, what's the big deal.
Cleveland and Cincinnati is a rivalry and we are well in to the season, so I don't understand what is the BIG DEAL about today, who cares?
Well, I don't know how it all works, but the TV who broadcasts the game, was going to distribute it to a limited market, but, with Johnny Cleveland starting, and, apparently, the football world in general watching, they have almost expanded their market to the entire nation.
So, Johnny is bringing in BILLIONS in advertising dollars today, I just find that remarkable how one little quarterback in Cleveland, Ohio can create so much interest.
"I Can't Breathe" signs will be put down today, there may be some display by the players on the field, arms raised as a token, may show up, there may be some silk-screened shirts in the crowd, but all thoughts will be on John and his performance on the field .... scramble, scramble, Run Johnny Run.
Today, the Browns and the fans will see if the investment they made, was worthwhile. The Network is happy, time will tell if the Browns organization is.

I remember TV starting in the mid 40's and one of the first shows was a cooking show, every channel had one, so we are looking at 70 plus years of cooking shows.
They have shown us how to cook a turkey for all that time, and each year they have tried to make it sound like something new, it still results in putting the bird in the oven and cooking it, but each "chef" tries to add something new. Trying to add something new to drinking a glass of water.
Christmas Cookies, same thing, this year they have added something new, multiple chefs and a competition to find out which one can create the best cookie.
Years ago, each station, radio and TV had one weatherman, and I think even then, they took the weather from the National Weather Service, and tried to localize it and make it interesting. Now they each have many weather persons, giving up to the minute forecasts, anticipating danger, and the first thing we lose, electricity and the TV. And, and the old saying goes, "We shall have weather, whether or not."
Let's be realistic, September, October, November and December are the time of the year for money to exchange hands, millions and billions, donate and purchase, buy, buy, buy. Buy a toy for a tot, great thought, perhaps a healthy meal would be better, but, each child needs a toy. You can purchase a toy, at Toys R Us, and drop it in a box by the door. How great is that, for the store, Walmart does the same thing. It is the "Time of Giving" ... so GIVE to this and this and this. I got an Email from Tiger Woods, who has BILLIONS and wants me, on SS, to donate so underprivileged kids can learn how to play golf. Will Welfare pay the Greens Fees?

With the anticipation of what is going to happen to me next week, no pleasant thought seems to take precedent. Santa is in the back of my mind ..... 12/14/14 - We are at the point in our lives and our married lives, after fifty years, where, well, just being alive is a small victory. When I go back, in the morning, to wake my wife, I pray that .. well, she is still with us. Generally, if Caleb, out dog, comes out to the living room, that means she has gotten up and well, the first hurdle of the day is over. He came out this morning, but Marilyn was still asleep, so I went back, woke her up, and she asks, "How are you?"
I am 82, sore neck and lower back, and recently have had a Urologist probing, where Urologists probe, unsuccessfully, to remove my kidney stone. Soon, they want me to get to Columbus, Ohio, OSU Hospital, or maybe, The OSU Hospital, where another Urologist will perform the same procedure, only, this one is more like a "corkscrew" ... similar to the ones that miners use to extract coal, in the hopes that it might work.
Friday, I went in for the test. Everyone is so nice and polite. WHY, does everyone in the hospital ask, "How are you?" If I answer fine, then why am I in here, and, I am sure they really don't want to hear the truth. "How are you?"
"Nervous, apprehensive, frightened to death, scared because I have a kidney stone, a large kidney stone, and this team is getting ready to take me to surgery, strap my legs in stirrups, expose me from the waist down, to the world, put me to sleep, and then insert something, similar to a coat hanger, you know where, probe around and try to break up my stone, which is similar to a diamond in hardness, and you ask how I am."
Back to today, Sunday, and the struggle we face each day, just to make it through. My wife is in Afib more than she is out, the result of her treatment to fend off her breast cancer. Her treatment caused her to have Con genitive Heart Failure, etc., etc., etc. She struggles to make it through each day. Low blood pressure, often, which lowers upon standing, dizzy, etc.,
Each day is a challenge for both of us, my problems now render me less able to take care of her.
The challenges of old age. Everyone who lives long enough, goes through it, some better, some worse. This year, not even putting up our Christmas tree, we are skirting the holiday. It looks like it is going to take all we have just to weather the Winter.
Now you know why my "posts" have been few and far between, old age, the Golden Years, the Twilight Years .... they only call them that to make them sound more pleasant. The Declining Years, the Downside Years, the One Day at a Time Season of Life, the Struggling Years ... The End of the Trail ............... advertising ..............

I remember when there was just Notre Dame and the Army-Navy game. I have listened to them on the radio all of my life, The Army-Navy game is what all of football should be, two good teams, rivals before and during the game, they shake hands and walk off together after the game, a heated rivalry.
To me, it is always the biggest game of the year, something about the game that is just pure football, pure sports as it should be. Navy has dominated it recently, but hope and optimism precede each game.
I think the pageantry of this game cause me to choose The Citadel, I wanted to wear one of those uniforms like the Cadets, and, we wore the same type uniform.
I remember Blanchard and Davis, Roger Staubach and others. Both marching in to the football stadium. In '51, The Citadel played Army. A trainload of cadets from The Citadel headed to New York. We marched on to the field,, wow, dream come true. We ate in the big Mess Hall and toured West Point. Great memory.
It looks like another Navy win today, but both student bodies will march on the field. They will not loot, burn or riot, they will head home and study, the world will revolved as usual.

Urology 101
12/12/14 - a day that will last in Infamy, I prepared, bathed in "Red Soap" ate and drank nothing, went to the hospital early for my "procedure" on my Kidney Stone. I did all of the preliminary work, put on their flimsy PJ's, had the IV put in my wrist, signed my name many times, talked with Nurses both male and female, a Phlebotomist put in my IV, I talked with 3 Anesthesiologists and signed their papers, actually the third one did the work, not sure of the purpose of the other two. I was wheeled in to Surgery, scooted on to the operating table, scooted down, my legs went in to the stirrups, then the mask ..... and nothing.
I woke up some time later, back in my room, no pain, felt pretty good. Then the Urologist came in the room and informed me that he was unable to do anything, and I was to call him next week to schedule an appointment at OSU hospital in Columbus. And, that was about it.
I still have a hole of some kind in my left side, which insures the medical profession that I WILL show up in Columbus, at OSU Medical Center next week, because one can not exist long with this hole in my side ............ they GOTCHA .....
I was just feeling somewhat approving of the medical profession and their application of such services and facilities that they offer. I am not going to get depressed until next week sometime. Friday night, going to have a nice weekend ................

Presidential Appointment: Fatima Noor
She majored in psychology with minors in Spanish and international relations. She recently completed a month-long research fellowship in psychology hosted by Carnegie-Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh; her research will be ongoing for this program. Noor was a leader in many honor societies at the U of M. She has done volunteer work with World Relief Memphis and the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition.

(CNN)- If you think you are tech savvy all because you know what “LOL” means, let me test your coolness.
Any idea what “IWSN” stands for in Internet slang? It’s a declarative statement: I want sex now.
If it makes you feel any better, I had no clue, and neither did a number of women I asked about it.
Acronyms are widely popular across the Internet, especially on social media and texting apps, because, in some cases, they offer a shorthand for communication that is meant to be instant.
So “LMK” — let me know — and “WYCM” — will you call me? — are innocent enough.
But the issue, especially for parents, is understanding the slang that could signal some dangerous teen behavior, such as “GNOC,'” which means “get naked on camera.”
And it certainly helps for a parent to know that “PIR” means parent in room, which could mean the teen wants to have a conversation about things that his or her mom and dad might not approve of.
Katie Greer is a national Internet safety expert who has provided Internet and technology safety training to schools, law enforcement agencies and community organizations throughout the country for more than seven years. She says research shows that a majority of teens believe that their parents are starting to keep tabs on their online and social media lives.
“With that, acronyms can be used by kids to hide certain parts of their conversations from attentive parents,” Greer said. “Acronyms used for this purpose could potentially raise some red flags for parents.”
But parents would drive themselves crazy, she said, if they tried to decode every text, email and post they see their teen sending or receiving. “I’ve seen some before and it’s like ‘The Da Vinci Code,’ where only the kids hold the true meanings (and most of the time they’re fairly innocuous),” she said.
Still, if parents come across any acronyms they believe could be problematic, they should talk with their kids about them, said Greer. But how, on earth, is a parent to keep up with all these acronyms, especially since new ones are being introduced every day?
“It’s a lot to keep track of,” Greer said. Parents can always do a Google search if they stumble upon an phrase they aren’t familiar with, but the other option is asking their children, since these phrases can have different meanings for different people.
“Asking kids not only gives you great information, but it shows that you’re paying attention and sparks the conversation around their online behaviors, which is imperative.”
Micky Morrison, a mom of two in Islamorada, Florida, says she finds Internet acronyms “baffling, annoying and hilarious at the same time.”
She’s none too pleased that acronyms like “LOL” and “OMG” are being adopted into conversation, and already told her 12-year-old son — whom she jokingly calls “deprived,” since he does not have a phone yet — that acronym talk is not allowed in her presence.
But the issue really came to a head when her son and his adolescent friends got together and were all “ignoring one another with noses in their phones,” said Morrison, founder of BabyWeightTV.
“I announced my invention of a new acronym: ‘PYFPD.’ Put your freaking phone down.”

But back to the serious issue at hand, below are 28 Internet acronyms, which I learned from Greer and other parents I talked with, as well as from sites such as NoSlang.com and NetLingo.com, and from Cool Mom Tech’s 99 acronyms and phrases that every parent should know.

Exams Postponed for Law Students Traumatized by Ferguson
Columbia Law School is granting final exam postponements to students who say they were traumatized by recent grand jury decisions not to indict white police officers responsible for killing unarmed black men in Ferguson, Mo., and Staten Island, N.Y.
The school's interim dean, Robert E. Scott, announced the decision Saturday in an email to the school. He allowed the extensions after a petition was posted by The Columbia Law School Coalition of Concerned Students of Color on the same day.
"Recent events have unsettled our lives as students," the petition read. "We have struggled to compartmentalize our trauma as we sit and make fruitless attempts to focus on exam preparation. We sit to study with the knowledge that our brothers and sisters are regularly killed with impunity on borders and streets; we sit to study with the understanding that our brothers and sisters are marching to have our humanity recognized and valued by a system that has continually failed us."
The request also sought an emergency event be held at the school so students, administration and faculty could be able to discuss the group's concerns.
Scott approved the postponement of exams should it be requested by individual students.
"The grand juries' determinations to return nonindictments in the Michael Brown and Eric Garner cases have shaken the faith of some in the integrity of the grand jury system and in the law more generally," he wrote in an email to the school community. "For some law students, particularly, though not only, students of color, this chain of events is all the more profound as it threatens to undermine a sense that the law is a fundamental pillar of society designed to protect fairness, due process and equality."
The decision drew criticism from some who argued these students should not expect this sort of deadline extension as future lawyers.

I would think that ANY student requesting a postponement because of this event, in no way, has a personality, temperment, or the mental makeup to become lawyers...... Leaders to be Proud of ............
Who in this country commands that kind of respect? Universal respect, both sides of the aisle, black and white. I am sure there are critics, but they seem quiet.
There is no American Royalty that comes to mind. We idolize some in the movies, some entertainers, I think that is about it. Politicians, definitely not.
How nice to see someone, a couple, who are universally respected, very refreshing.

Obama Blasted Press in Profanity-laced Rants Behind Closed Doors Over Scandals
Former ABC White House Reporter Ann Compton told C-SPAN that see was witness to Barack Obama engaging in at least one profanity-laced rant over how the news media covered his various scandal.
"I have seen in the last year Barack Obama really angry twice," Compton told C-SPAN. "Both were off-the-record times. One, profanity-laced where he thought the press was making too much of scandals that he did not think were scandals."
"Another where he took us to task for not understanding the limits he has with foreign policy and the way he's dealing with things in the Middle East and Iraq and Afghanistan," she added.
"And I don't find him apologetic," she continued. "But I find him willing to stand up to the press and look them in the eye, even though it was off the record, and just give us hell."
When asked if Obama had a point, Compton said, "From his point of view, he may, but we cover what we are allowed to cover. And when policy decisions and presidents are inaccessible and don't take questions from the press on a regular basis, I think they reap what they sow."
During her hour long interview on C-SPAN with Brian Lamb, Compton exposed the "most transparent administration in history," calling it opaque.
"Before I walked out the door on September 10, I was a strong voice for complaining that this particular administration has been more opaque than any I have covered about what the President does in the Oval Office every day," Compton said. "He is far less accessible on photo-ops with meetings. Even some meetings on the record, meeting in the Roosevelt room with financial leaders from, from Wall Street or on issues with environmental groups, or with issues with environmental groups, with public opinion leaders. I think most presidents have been far more forthcoming than the second Obama term, in terms of what the president is doing every day and we almost never get photo-ops."
She went on to add, "I think I went through a time of three or four months where I was never in the Oval Office once on my pool day. Part of this may be that the president feels a little bit on the ropes. His job approval rating is down to 40 percent consistently for the last couple of years since his reelection. He also has his own tools. He is the first president with his own journalistic tools. They've all had photographers. He has his own videographers. He has a newscast on Friday mornings on WhiteHouse.gov. It is anchored by his former deputy, now press secretary, Josh Earnest. I think it is fine if the President of the United States wants to present his own version of what he did all week. Most of it is behind the scenes shots of him with Supreme Court justices and leaders coming in from Wall Street. It is fine that he puts it on the Internet and that everybody can see it. Those same elements should not be blocked from the White House press corps."

No matter what the issue is, Barack Obama is supposed to be a public servant. As such, he is open to questioning and interrogation by the press, something that is protected under the First Amendment.
Though his administration has tried to control the press, including squashing tweets and approving stories before they were published, several voices, including Compton's are now coming out.
While I applaud them for coming forward, I have to ask why they weren't so forward years, or even months, ago, instead of covering for the Marxist-in-chief. It's been the alternative media, for the most part, who have been documenting Obama's lies, corruption and criminal activity. One has to wonder why the press won't really hold this administration's feet to the fire. Perhaps now they realize exactly what this administration has been peddling and they are tired of buying it.

POLITICS - Above all else
WHY is it necessary for our "Intelligence" people to reveal their documents, it just does not make sense to me ..... yes it does .... POLITICS ... her swan song, she will soon lose her power and she wants to let the world know .... "I WAS THERE AND DID THIS." She has done more damage to this country than can ever be imagined, all in the name of politics..
SHE never got on the bandwagon to ask for a glimpse of ANY obama credentials, I wonder why she was never concerned about that? .... Oh, yes I do, same party .....
I think it is interesting the tremendous response being heaped on the future King and his Queen. How nice to be able to show respect for leaders, any leaders, certainly not ours, but, these two, we really like. What a novel idea, having leaders that people respect ..... are we a great country ...... or what?
Blub, glub, glerp ......
Are we building bridges for future generations? I remember the story of the old man who was building a bridge, not for himself, but for some young man who might follow. Let's face it, "we ain't no bridge builders," if anything, we destroy the bridges that are already in place, and leave devastation for those in future generations to clean up and rebuild.
We have left the devastation of war, economic devastation, political devastation, perhaps global devastation, not often have we left it a "better place."
Racial unrest, probably been going on since the world began. I am still somewhat in awe of the fact that on a daily basis, blacks kill blacks, with no concern, but riots follow a white killing a black. Where are the Black leaders who should want to see improvement, accomplishments, successes, they are out inciting riots.
Toys for Tots at Christmas. Our local TV just showed a picture of their studio, wall to wall toys ... for kids, everyone collects toys for kids. Walmart has boxes where you can purchase a toy and place it in one of their boxes .... for the kids. I have often wondered though ..... well .... perhaps a hungry child feels better ..... with a new toy. My guess would be that Toys R Us and Walmart are the biggest winners in the Toys for Tots war.
This is the season to give, donate, donate and give .... tis the giving season, so get them to give, donate.
Cynical, I guess I am, old and crotchety, yeah, right, I used to love the season, now, I am so much happier when it is all over, and a year away.
My wife is in Afib much of the time, I have a BIG Kidney Stone, a hole in my back where they placed a shunt .... not sure how they are going to get rid of it, they seem more concerned about the needed anesthetic than the removal process itself. This season seems to bring out the worst of my health problems. I had my triple bi-pass right before Christmas a few years ago, one year my ulcers kicked up, spend a number of them in the hospital.
I guess I should not complain, I got my Big Teddy Bear .... bi-pass protection, still have him sitting in Grandma's Little Rocking Chair.

Rep. Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican, is regularly briefed on intelligence assessments. He told CNN's "State of the Union" that U.S. intelligence agencies and foreign governments have said privately that the release of the report on CIA interrogations a decade ago will be used by extremists to incite violence that is likely to cost lives. The 480-page report, a summary of a still-classified 6,000 page study, is expected to be made public next week.
A U.S. intelligence official, who was not authorized to be quoted discussing classified intelligence assessments, said Congress had been warned "of the heightened potential that the release could stimulate a violent response."
On Friday, Secretary of State John Kerry urged the senator in charge of the report to consider the timing of the release, though Obama administration officials say they still support making it public. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat and chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, has not responded to reports of the Kerry call, though she told the Los Angeles Times in a story published Sunday that "We have to get this report out."
A congressional aide noted that the White House has led negotiations to declassify the report since April, and that both the president and his director of national intelligence have endorsed its release. The government has taken steps to beef up security at American posts around the world, said the aide, who was not authorized to be quoted by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The report amounts to the first public accounting of the CIA's use of torture on al-Qaida detainees held in secret facilities in Europe and Asia in the years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
U.S. officials who have read it say it includes disturbing new details about the CIA's use of such techniques as sleep deprivation, confinement in small spaces, humiliation and the simulated drowning process known as waterboarding. President Barack Obama has acknowledged, "We tortured some folks." The report also says the torture failed to produce life-saving intelligence, a conclusion disputed by current and former intelligence officials, including CIA director John Brennan.
Rogers questioned why the report needed to become public, given that the Justice Department investigated and filed no criminal charges.
Feinstein told the Los Angeles Times that the harsh interrogations undermined "societal and constitutional values that we are very proud of. Anybody who reads this is going to never let this happen again."

Another thought ....................
Who, in their infinite wisdom, decided to make a movie about North Korea? I have not seen it, I have seen some scenes, and trying to look at it from THEIR point of view, I found it somewhat offensive and tasteless, all done to make someone a "buck" by being sensationalized.
If a similar movie had been undertaken, let's say negative to obama, I doubt that it would ever have been undertaken or released.
But to insult a potential enemy, one that we know little to nothing about, one who is friends with a basketball player, well to say the least is, "strange," ... a leader we know little to nothing about, but seems to have one heck of an Army behind him .....
"Hey, let's do a movie and insult North Korea."
"Oh, great idea."

It apparently has to do with 9/11 and how SOME elements of our government, reacted after the attack,
I guess my thought would be, if it is so inflammatory that THEY know what the results might be disastrous .... well .... then ..... why?
My guess would be .................... politics ....... someone or some party ..... well, just WHY?

Survivors gather to remember Pearl Harbor attack
PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) — Veterans who survived the Pearl Harbor attack that launched the United States into World War II attended Sunday's 73rd anniversary ceremony with the help of canes, wheelchairs and motorized scooters.
Wearing purple orchid lei, about 100 Pearl Harbor and World War II survivors attended the ceremony overlooking a memorial that sits atop sunken battleship USS Arizona. Many of them arrived well before the sun came up.
This year's anniversary of the Japanese attack is the 10th consecutive one that USS Utah survivor Gilbert Meyer attended. But it's getting harder for Meyer, 91, to travel to Hawaii from San Antonio.
Asked if he planned to attend next year's anniversary, he responded with a chuckle, "That's like asking me if I'll still be alive."
Harold Johnson, 90, is making it a goal to attend the 75th anniversary, even though traveling from Oak Harbor, Washington, isn't always easy. "I've got a little scooter that's a real life saver," the USS Oklahoma survivor said.
Johnson had been aboard the Oklahoma for just six months on Dec. 7, 1941, looking forward to a day off and a "date with a little Hawaiian girl." He was shining his shoes when the first alarm went off, he recalled. "Three months later I ran into her in town in Honolulu," he said of his date. "She was mad at me because I stood her up."
For many of the roughly 2,000 survivors who remain, there are also more painful memories.
Keynote speaker Gen. Lori Robinson, commander of Pacific Air Forces, told the crowd of several thousand about four of the nine remaining survivors of the USS Arizona. Don Stratton, 92, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Lauren Bruner, 94, of La Mirada, California, were two of six men who escaped the inferno that engulfed the forward half of the ship by negotiating a line, hand over hand, about 45 feet in the air, despite burns to more than 60 percent of their bodies. John Anderson, 97, of Roswell, New Mexico, was ordered off the ship, but he didn't want to leave behind his twin brother, Delbert. Even though he was forced into a small boat that took him to Ford Island, he commandeered an empty boat and returned to the Arizona to rescue three shipmates. But he never found his brother.
"When the Arizona sank, she took with her 1,177 sailors and Marines," Robinson told the crowd, which included Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer and Hawaii Gov. David Ige.
Robinson also highlighted the sacrifices of the Honolulu Fire Department, which was dispatched to respond after receiving the alarm at 8:05 a.m. "Without knowing it, the Honolulu Fire Department was going to war," she said. "Three firefighters would never return, and six others would be seriously injured."
The ceremony also featured a Japanese peace prayer, a Hawaiian blessing and a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., the minute the bombing began. F-22s from the Hawaii Air National Guard 199th Fighter Squadron and Air Force 19th Fighter Squadron conducted a flyover.
